Apple eliminates 174 positions from Elk Grove, California; transfers work to Austin, Texas
Thursday, May 01, 2008 - 04:28 PM EDT

"Apple Inc. eliminated 174 sales and support jobs at its Elk Grove facility Thursday, transferring the work to a site in Austin, Texas," Dale Kasler reports for The Sacramento Bee.

"In a letter to state officials, Apple said the 174 workers will be given opportunities to relocate or apply for another Apple job in Elk Grove. The company said it employs more than 1,100 workers in Elk Grove," Kasler reports. "The layoffs include sales representatives, online chat representatives and others."

Kasler reports, "City officials said they were taking the news in stride. 'While it's very disappointing that 174 people are going to be laid off, we're still fortunate that the company remains a major employer in Elk Grove,' said Steve Czarnecki, executive director of the Elk Grove Economic Development Corp."

MacDailyNews Take: Good luck to those Apple employees who are affected. On the bright side, at least somebody's hiring in Austin. wink

And at least they're not leaving thousands of people in the dust. They're giving these 174 people a chance for another job with Apple. Funny though, that they're transferring work to Austin.

That's a bummer. The relocation option is cool though... Not sure if the expenses would be worth it, or if Apple would assist them...

Texas is MUCH more employer friendly than Mexifornia.

Austin, Tx? That's Dell's territory. Looks like Apple is ready to take on th efight against Dell. Well, the best thing to do for them would be to release a complete boosted Mac Mini with keyboard and 17in screen for $799. They'll eat not only Dell's but Vista's lunch at once. Otherwise, Apple is missing a big opportunity here.

No, it's probably because you are a racist douche.

@ ron:

You probably cleared your cookies too... I think that's what makes MDN remember. Just login again...

Why is it funny they are moving the positions to Texas?
Lower taxes, cheaper rent and living costs than California-what's so puzzling?

May 01, 08 - 05:02 pm Comment from: nekogami13

To Mac+-Apple has had a support center in Austin for years(more than a decade I believe).
Maybe Apple is getting ready to assault ID software-based in Mesquite TX(down the road from Austin) or balance out the Fact Compaq(now HP) world headquarters is in Houston, Tx.

@ron

Texas is very liberal when it comes to immigration rights, and there are many so-called sanctuary cities, like Houston, where I live. I am proud of that. (So very off-topic. Sorry, everyone else.)

May 01, 08 - 05:06 pm Comment from: Crabs

@nekogami13

It's funny because that's where Dell just axed over a thousand jobs. I figured everyone on this site would know that, since MDN paraded it around when it happened. I guess I should've said that before...

The same salary in Austin will go hella further than it will in Sacramento.

May 01, 08 - 05:23 pm Comment from: Demon

Apple's Tech Support Center as been in Austin, TX for well over 10 years. Apple consolidates and moves people around all the time. The 174 positions in Elk Grove should have been in Austin to begin with. My guess is Apple is preparing to expand some other group that's in the Elk Grove offices. It seems to me part of the iTunes team is in that building too.

May 01, 08 - 05:45 pm Comment from: wannabe

I'm not sure that I'd say Mesquite is "down the road" from Austin... 200 miles is a long road.

May 01, 08 - 06:06 pm Comment from: overlook00

Go ahead and ask somone from california to move to texas, see what happens.

May 01, 08 - 06:25 pm Comment from: Michael Dell

@ wannabe

Not in Tejas its not. I fly that far to work every day.

May 01, 08 - 06:58 pm Comment from: Steev

Ca. has become more and more Corp. unfriendly over the last 25yrs.

I'd move to Tx if given the Opportunity. It's getting more & more expensive to live in Ca.

Texas is much better.
California is not only the land of milk and honey,
but also fruits and nuts!

Tommy, "hella" is not a real word. Only punks use something like that.

For example "waaay" or "sooo."

Go back and finish the sixth grade.

May 01, 08 - 07:33 pm Comment from: MacFherghaile

I worked for Apple in the late 80's and early 90's my pay checks came out of the Apple finance center in Austin, TX. Apple has been in Austin for years.

May 01, 08 - 09:06 pm Comment from: nekogami13

@ Wannabe- 200 miles is a long road? That's about the length of my driveway here wink

@ Crabs- So, dell is cutting thousands of jobs in Canada and elsewhere, Apple is relocating some positions-not eliminating them. What's ironic about that?

@ Demon- I wasn't sure how long the Austin center has been there-I just know it was about 10 years ago when my mom called for tech support on there Apple and learned every single fact about the tech support persons life-including they were in Austin.

May 01, 08 - 09:37 pm Comment from: An Optimist

Apple should be prepared to relocate all of their California operations to Austin - when The Big One hits.

Sounds like Steve is trying to get a tax break, layoff some folks to scare local government, and voila.

May 01, 08 - 11:39 pm Comment from: Crabs

@nekogami13

It's only ironic because it's the same place. I'm sorry if we have differing senses of humor. Eesh, can't even make a lame joke around here without getting berated.

May 02, 08 - 11:16 am Comment from: The irony is...

...that Apple will rescue many of the workers victimized by Dell. When Mikey eventually scraps everything and passes the losses to the shareholders, Apple will be a (likely growing) presence in Austin, which will help cushion the impact of Dell´s demise.

Although not reported, they may have laid off 174 "sales" people. They are about to add 250 (temp) Iphone support agents in neighboring Rancho Cordova.

May 03, 08 - 03:10 am Comment from: Step Down

Leaving Cali for anywhere in Texas is like trading a date with a Supermodel for a date with a truck stop lot lizard. Austin is better than most of the rest of Tejas, but that's a dubious title to hold.

On the employment front, I hear a Coke dealer/distributor will be needed in Crawford, Texas NLT January 2009. Send your applications to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C.

May 03, 08 - 09:55 am Comment from: Faulty Logic

"And at least they're not leaving thousands of people in the dust. They're giving these 174 people a chance for another job with Apple."

That's disingenuous crap. Usually the way it works with such announcements, 174 people are going to be allowed to apply for 3 open positions which they're not qualified for or relocate to Texas at their own expense. If they had plans to move almost all to other departments, they would have done that rather than firing them.
