Apple exec: Mac OS X Snow Leopard to be released first quarter of 2009
Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - 10:38 AM EST

"Apple's Director of Engineering of Unix Technologies Jordan Hubbard spoke at LISA '08 last week," Arnold Kim reports for Mac Rumors.

"LISA (or Large Installation System Administration Conference) is a technical conference targeted at engineers and system administrators," Kim explains.

Hubbard's "most surprising revelation is a more specific target date for Apple's Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard): 1st Quarter 2009," Kim reports.

MacDailyNews Note: Apple's Snow Leopard webpage states that the OS is "scheduled to ship in about a year." The webpage debuted in June 2008.

All right, awesome.

Nov 19, 08 - 10:44 am Comment from: Jamie

I think I just wet myself.

Snow Leopard is gonna rock the house. I've used a preview copy, and all I can say is Wow, just Wow!

This is gonna make Windows 7 look like a Fisher Price toy.

Nov 19, 08 - 10:45 am Comment from: Demon

Which will toast Windows 7 by more then a year if we use the Normal MS schedule. 6-9 Months if we use their intended release dates.

Nov 19, 08 - 10:48 am Comment from: DogGone

Apple is firing on all cylinders. At some point the brokers will recognize that this is a good thing.

Aapl market cap is 80B. They have 25B in cash. That's enough to bail out the US car industry!!

Nov 19, 08 - 10:48 am Comment from: CD

Are they going to call it Snow Leopard still?
Saber Tooth Tiger sounds more powerful...I can see the graphic.

Nov 19, 08 - 10:49 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

THIS is great news!

Just think, Snow Leopard AND President Obama all at the same time!

Who'da thunk...

More 'than' a year also.

Nov 19, 08 - 11:12 am Comment from: Jay-Z

Let's just hope they have all their i's dotted and t's crossed. I don't want Apple to leave themselves open to any criticism whatsoever after some of the missteps this year.

Nov 19, 08 - 11:15 am Comment from: @ CD

The Saber Tooth Tiger is extinct. Vista is almost extinct.

Think before you post these things.

Nov 19, 08 - 11:26 am Comment from: G4Dualie

Are you thinking about upgrading to that new Intel Mac yet? You should be. Start saving now.

When Apple releases Snow Leopard it will brang the stang to Ballmer's eyes.

Nov 19, 08 - 11:30 am Comment from: PaKo

Snow Leopard released in winter. That would make perfect sense.

Nov 19, 08 - 11:38 am Comment from: Roy

For my own Macs, great. For the 600 Macs that I manage? No way I'll be upgrading them. I'm still fighting with Leopard issues and considering moving a few labs back to Tiger.

The dev seeds of Snow Leopard have been less than stellar as well.

Nov 19, 08 - 11:48 am Comment from: DLMeyer

Thy just want to rip my Dual G5 (PPC) out of my hands a few months earlier. Well ... maybe. First quarter is a busy time for me, including paying the bills for the previous fourth quarter.
Maybe for my birthday - in July.

Nov 19, 08 - 11:54 am Comment from: Monk VanDu

My G5 iMac in going through its death throes from bad vram - I think a Snow Leopard equipped MacBook would be a great replacement.

Nov 19, 08 - 11:56 am Comment from: Yours Smugly

@ @ CD: "The Saber Tooth Tiger is extinct."
But the sabertooth is still cooler than the snow leopard (despite the snow, heh).

@ Mr. Reeee: hear hear! wink

Here's hoping that Snow Leopard will be a cheap upgrade, something like $39. Or it'd better be fast as hell if Apple wants us to fork over $129 for it.

Nov 19, 08 - 12:14 pm Comment from: hairbo

Most people will think I'm nuts, but I really think Apple should start building cars. They've got lots of capital, and a corporate culture that focuses on getting things right, and doing things better. they could probably design an awesome electric or hybrid car, and bring some excitement back to American cars.

Nov 19, 08 - 12:35 pm Comment from: Shadowself

I'm with those who want to err on the side of caution. We do *not* want another Leopard with Snow Leopard. If it takes until July or August to get the bugs worked out then Apple should take that time!

Nov 19, 08 - 12:37 pm Comment from: Macintosher

@hairbo

I'd say wait until 2010. The American car industry wouldn't exist even in memory and it's a huge step.

Nov 19, 08 - 12:51 pm Comment from: Raymond in DC

Says hairbo, "I really think Apple should start building cars." I can't agree. Apple, like other great companies, "sticks to it's knitting", and doesn't venture beyond it's area of expertise.

SL will go nice with the 4 core iMacs.

Nov 19, 08 - 01:28 pm Comment from: GranitW

Am I the only person in the world left that remembers steve specfically saying at WWDC08 that Snow Leopard is coming out in January 09???

Nov 19, 08 - 01:30 pm Comment from: Rainer

Ah, Jordan Hubbard (aka JKH) - I didn't know he was still around at Apple. He led the FreeBSD Core-Team for a couple of years before he left for AAPL.
Nice to see that there is so much continuity at Apple.
OK, I should probably say "good continuity", because there's a lot of "continuity" at MSFT, too, but it doesn't help them
wink

Nov 19, 08 - 02:16 pm Comment from: JAYGEE

I doubt I will upgrade my Laptop till I leave Uni. Nothing worse than updating my system half way through uni, especially if say my printer of other software is not compatable with Snow Leopard, like what happened with my printer when upgrading from Tiger to Leopard.

Nov 19, 08 - 03:08 pm Comment from: thethirdshoe

OpenCL is a main contributor to making Snow Leopard scream.

There's a story on Macworld OpenCL gets touted in Texas

That ends with "But putting this specification out into the industry will enable the silicon for the mobile handsets to be designed at this point. It could all happen sooner than anyone expects."

Can you say PA Semi? wink

Nov 19, 08 - 03:08 pm Comment from: sparkplug

Hey, I'm surprised that nobody mentioned it should be Super Snappy!

Nov 19, 08 - 05:09 pm Comment from: thethirdshoe

Good One, Sparky! cool smile

Nov 19, 08 - 06:26 pm Comment from: Scott in Japan

I`m not sure... has Cheetah been used ? Cheetah would be a good choice, since `Snow Leopard` is supposed to be about streamlining the OS.... hence making it a high-speed cat !!?!!!

Nov 19, 08 - 10:03 pm Comment from: I am me

Scott,

Mac OS X v10.0 "Cheetah"
Mac OS X v10.1 "Puma"
Mac OS X v10.2 "Jaguar"
Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther"
Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger"
Mac OS X v10.5 "Leopard"

Mac OS X v10.6 (Snow Leopard)

Nov 20, 08 - 08:24 am Comment from: smyhre

Yes Cheetah has been used before unfortunately on the most unstable version of OSX, but then again Cheetahs can only run fast for a very short amount of time then they have to rest for quite a while. Not sure I'd want my Mac to run like that.
