Apple fan organizes Macworld Expo protest: ‘utter silence’ for Phil Schiller
Friday, December 19, 2008 - 02:51 PM EDT

"A miffed Mac user is asking fellow Apple fans to protest Steve Jobs' decision not to participate in next month's Macworld conference by remaining absolutely silent during a keynote presentation by Jobs' stand-in," Paul McDougall reports for InformationWeek. "'Let there be no applause, no whistling just utter and complete silence,' wrote Lesa Snider King, on a Web page she posted in order to publicize her campaign."

"Apple earlier this week stunned the tech world with its announcement that Jobs would not deliver his annual keynote at Macworld... and that Apple itself would pull out of the convention following the 2009 show in San Francisco," McDougall reports. "Apple said the Macworld 2009 keynote will be delivered by senior marketing VP Philip Schiller instead of Jobs."

MacDailyNews Take: It won't work. Little applause, no whistling, and general silence are Phil's trademarks.

McDougall continues, "IDG, Macworld's host, said in a statement this week that it has no plans to discontinue the conference, despite Apple's withdrawal. 'We are obviously disappointed in Apple's decision not to participate in Macworld 2010,' IDG said. Still, the company added, 'We look forward to many more successful years of Macworld to come.'"

MacDailyNews Take: Yeah, right. As George Santayana wrote, "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

The past, in chronological order:
MacWorld east coast show close to moving to Boston - September 25, 2002
Macworld returning to Boston (traffic hellhole) - October 07, 2002

Good luck.

Apple giveth, Apple taketh away.

Thus is the way of Apple. wink

Dec 19, 08 - 03:56 pm Comment from: MrMcLargeHuge

You want some cheese with that whine?

Dec 19, 08 - 03:59 pm Comment from: Poo

How about not showing up??? Not buying a ticket would be a much better "protest".

Dec 19, 08 - 03:59 pm Comment from: coolfactor

People! Read the protest site!

This is NOT about Steve Jobs. It is about Apple pulling out of MacWorld completely.

"On Tuesday, Dec. 16 Apple Inc. announced that Steve Jobs would not do the keynote at the 2009 Macworld Conference & Expo. That’s okay. They also announced that they would no longer attend the conference in the future. That’s not okay."

Dec 19, 08 - 04:00 pm Comment from: Aldarion

Shut up whiny ass fanatics. I've been a Mac supporter since the LC II but come on. "Let's give Schiller the silent treatment" - That is why the outside world calls us the cult of mac.

Dec 19, 08 - 04:01 pm Comment from: FloydPink

Totally disagree with this. Regardless of the situation, (so far unknown), I don't see how this can be of any positive value. I hope Phil does well. Big enough shoes to fill as it is.

Dec 19, 08 - 04:02 pm Comment from: G4Dualie

Release the hounds!

I feel sorry for her. I know she probably means well but, I believe when all is said and done she will have regretted her decision to try and shame Apple into offering her, and the rest of the world a plausible explanation.

I wrote and told her that in spite of her clarion call, the place will probably erupt into extended applause as a show of force for a company we all love. The sound will probably stir something in Schiller too!

Dec 19, 08 - 04:04 pm Comment from: MidWest Mac

Crazy idea, here, but how about the crowd exudes the exact amount of reverence that the products/software displayed deserve?

It's not like Jobs has made people fall in love with turds at past keynotes. He's obviously a great showman, but the products themselves are always the stars. That's why they SELL!

I buy Apple products because they are the best. Not because Steve Jobs told me to. Seriously.

Dec 19, 08 - 04:05 pm Comment from: Beavertail

This is stupid.
If jobs can't make it to the conference, so what?
Lighten up folks!

Dec 19, 08 - 04:07 pm Comment from: Fair and Balanced

Give me a break. Take a look around, lady. This world's got bigger problems that need yours and everyone's time and energy.

Dec 19, 08 - 04:10 pm Comment from: Predrag

Nobody here read the site (except for coolfactor).

It is not about Phil Schiller. It is about the MWSF 2010 and Apple not being there.

She seems to have this obsession with MacWorld and Apple in it; for her, it feels like somebody just cancelled Christmas forever. And she is extremely emotional about it. If you check out her site, there is a big Tribute to MW page, where she goes on raving about the significance of MW in her life. Judging by that, one could see how her entire life revolved around this one annual event and Apple is taking the fun away by not being there next year.

It's quite charming, actually.

Dec 19, 08 - 04:12 pm Comment from: Macdoc

Get a LIFE!

Dec 19, 08 - 04:14 pm Comment from: Predrag

And to clarify once more: She's NOT upset that Jobs is not going to be there this year. She is upset pecause Apple won't be there anymore beginning next year.

Got it? Good.

Fracking crybaby.
Grow up and deal with it.

Dec 19, 08 - 04:20 pm Comment from: Hibow

Apple's consistently makes decisions that on first blush catch people off balance. Trade shows in the tech industry are more dog and pony than educational.

The entire point of bringing new products to the market is to do so when they are ready. Not to match the release date to a trade show.

The Flat World allows us to be there without being there.

Bravo Apple

Dec 19, 08 - 04:21 pm Comment from: Jeremy

Yeah, this is yet another site (shame on MDN) propagating the myth that this is about Steve Jobs not being there and Phil giving the keynote. All over the Interwebs people are talking about this and it's based on completely inaccurate information being pushed by sites like this one.

Also, the lady needs to grow up and think before she writes. As a professional, she just put her foot firmly in her mouth. Some of the people writing in the comments here could do a better job than she, how come she is the famous writer if she thinks up bonehead junk like this?

Dec 19, 08 - 04:23 pm Comment from: Jeremy

I predict someone will purposely get the crowd to applaud at the very beginning. Something like "let's hear it for Phil!" Not being rude like this woman, most will comply, thus completely defusing her "protest."

Dec 19, 08 - 04:29 pm Comment from: JJ

What an ass. So does she think that Apple will suddenly reverse their direction just so Phil can get some applause? This is so lame. I don't know why people are so frickin' sensitive when it comes to Apple's decisions. The writing has been on the wall for a long time. Apple wasn't at NAB this past year and a lot of other companies are using more effective means to reach people. Tradeshows are dinosaurs in this modern age.

It doesn't matter that her website isn't about Phil, the idea is immature and will ultimately be ineffective. Grow up.

Dec 19, 08 - 04:30 pm Comment from: msr

Why be a jerk to Phil? I think he's a pretty good guy.

Dec 19, 08 - 04:31 pm Comment from: Masonhg

This is an indirect way to provide some buzz for Sean King's "Your Mac Life" whom Lesa is married. Give Phil a chance to take the reigns here. We all KNOW that Steve is not long for this world so let's allow him some peace. As for Apple pulling out of Macworld, let's face it, IDG isn't giving them floor space - Apple is a customer. Apple needs only one tradeshow the might provide some pivotal impact and that's CES - where Apple and Apple developers can visibly drown the Microsoft faithful.

Dec 19, 08 - 04:31 pm Comment from: ericdano

On the flip side, MacWorld is a great place to go and just look at all products Apple. There is nothing better than that. A place, where you might find something you didn't know about, or get to play with something you heard about.

You can't really do that at the Apple Store. They don't stock hardly anything.

Dec 19, 08 - 04:34 pm Comment from: Richie

Macworld is going to have a quite death.

Dec 19, 08 - 04:37 pm Comment from: Olternaut

It won't work. Little applause, no whistling, and general silence are Phil's trademarks.

LOL! Your right it won't work.

Even so, people have a right to whine about this. While it just might be a very shrewd business decision by Apple and might just work out for the long run......they went about it IN THE WRONG WAY!
The timing of this SUCKED. They should have announced this weeks ago instead of slamming the industry at the last minute like this.
This just might be a last minute temper tantrum by Jobs over something he wanted from the IDG.
For business reasons though perhaps it will be better for Apple to have Apple only shows where Apple is in total control. Will this mean that we will have to wait till all the way to the next WWDC till we can see a major Apple keynote starring Steve Jobs complete with a major product announcement?

Dec 19, 08 - 04:37 pm Comment from: MacintoshSoftwareList.com

I say demand Jobs.

Dec 19, 08 - 04:44 pm Comment from: doubletrouble

More adolescence. Will it never end?

Besides, Phil doesn't ask for applause; all he asks is for people to listen. He'll be reporting on any number of significant advances being made, advances we may not be able to fully appreciate at the time. We'll learn; we've never been shamed by Phil Schiller. Why on earth would we want to be disrespectful towards him?

Heck, if Phil, as a marketing man, even begins to understand the technical advances he'll be talking about, I believe I'd give him beaucoup praise.

Dec 19, 08 - 04:47 pm Comment from: marco

lol @ MDN take

Dec 19, 08 - 04:47 pm Comment from: Jubei

Thats silly and rude to Mr. Schiller. Get over it please.

Dec 19, 08 - 04:49 pm Comment from: Predrag

Olternaut:

No, you don't have to wait. Apple will call a 'Special Event', right in Cupertino (or even rent an auditorium in SF, if it's big) and announce it when the product is ready (remember the new iPods, or the new MacBooks earlier this year?).

Scheduling product delivery around fixed dates isn't working. This 'Special Event' business has the same effect (with buzz, hysteria, media frenzy), so why not?

Dec 19, 08 - 04:50 pm Comment from: Jeeve Stobs

She is no mere "miffed Mac user". She has a vested financial interest in Apple being at the shows, or at least in Macworld Expo's long-term viability..

"Lesa is also a corporate trainer and teaches at many industry conferences including...Macworld Expo"

Source: http://www.graphicreporter.com/aboutlesa/bio.html

This is hardly the grassroots uprising that people are making it out to be. She's a businessperson with money on the line.

Apple's magical gathering place is now any local Apple Retail Store, any day of the week. Tradeshows are for vacuum cleaner salesmen. It is a format that has outlived it's usefulness for Apple.

Support Phil for his many years of hard work particularly up against Steve's headline-stealing aura.

Dec 19, 08 - 04:51 pm Comment from: Grow up already!

Could be worse. I hear Steve Ballmer may be available.

Dec 19, 08 - 04:52 pm Comment from: marco

Guys Apple has to go on with or without Steve Jobs. One day he will leave Apple (whether to do with personal health reasons or not), so get use to it NOW... If you think Apple needs Jobs that bad... I'd hate to see what the future holds for Apple...

Seriously!

Dec 19, 08 - 04:56 pm Comment from: Jon1

Of all the pointless ways of protesting, this is the dumbest. I used to respect Lesa - until I discovered that she is secretly stupid.
Phil should get up on stage and ask for complete silence during his presentation as a joke to loosen everyone up and overshadow Lesa's pitiful protest. Tradeshows are going the way of the Dodo.
Lesa is a Dodo.

Dec 19, 08 - 05:00 pm Comment from: MacMaster

Grow up dork

Dec 19, 08 - 05:07 pm Comment from: Dewars

Macworld 2010, sans Apple, will be the tradeshow equivalent of a comb-over.

Dec 19, 08 - 05:09 pm Comment from: G4Dualie

Great take from Roughly Drafted...

"Freed from a compulsory attendance at IDG’s obsolete trade show, Apple will be able to schedule its own events whenever it wants to; anyone who thinks the company will have any problem in showcasing its new gear simply hasn’t been paying attention. MacBooks, the iMac, iTunes releases, Snow Leopard plans, and the new iPhone 3G were all released last year without any connection to a trade show keynote."

Dec 19, 08 - 05:13 pm Comment from: G4Dualie

Phil should get up on stage and ask for complete silence during his presentation

That's clever... cool smirk

Dec 19, 08 - 05:13 pm Comment from: Irony

In Japan, a crowd responding with silence is the western equivalent of a wild standing ovation. Go figure.

Dec 19, 08 - 05:17 pm Comment from: Tony

As much as it's a letdown that Macworld will be no more, this is not fair to Phil. Why are people punishing him? It's not like there won't be any keynotes at all anymore... there's still WWDC and the special events Apple holds throughout the year.

Dec 19, 08 - 05:20 pm Comment from: cptnkirk

It always surprises me, although it shouldn't, how much and how well Apple and Steve can milk the press for coverage. No wonder Apple is one of the world's companies with the highest brand recognition! LOL!

Dec 19, 08 - 05:37 pm Comment from: CourtJester

Never allow them the vote.

Dec 19, 08 - 05:41 pm Comment from: ron

jeff "idot", idiot also.

Dec 19, 08 - 05:43 pm Comment from: Passerby

How is announcing they won't participate in MacWorld SF after 2009 "slamming the industry at the last minute"? The first one they won't be at is thirteen months away.

I also think you need a generous definition of the 'tech world', to say the tech world was stunned by Steve Jobs not giving the keynote. It's happened before. Much of the professional tech world are also scaling back trade show appearances. Trade shows just aren't cost effective.

Finally, not directed solely, or even mainly, at Lesa Snider King, but I am tired of protests over such trivial issues.

Dec 19, 08 - 05:50 pm Comment from: ken1w

The only thing these "protests" do is help Apple get more coverage, which I'm sure is part of their plan. The "last minute" aspect of the announcement, and the continuing (and unanswered) speculation about Steve Jobs's health only add fuel to the media coverage. If Apple announced the change months ago, and Steve Jobs appeared in public to announce it (to allay health concerns), there would be no excitement or interest. MacWorld really would be boring this year...

More people will be watching the Phil Schiller now, because there is all of this mystery that Apple has intentionally put on the table. If the eventual goal is to make Steve Jobs less visible and have Apple's other executives do more of the public presentations, Apple is doing a great job of making the transition interesting to the general public. Public interest sells products. It may not help AAPL stock price in the near term, but Apple's attitude has always been that stock price will follow with great results.

Steve Jobs and Apple are master manipulators of the media and public perception. Once again, they are expertly manipulating the media to garner tens of millions of dollars worth of free coverage for Apple during the next three weeks. If this is going to be the last MacWorld Expo, Apple might was well milk it for all it's worth.

Dec 19, 08 - 06:44 pm Comment from: Cretinous Lout

"It won't work. Little applause, no whistling, and general silence are Phil's trademarks."

That's the future? Hard to get happy over that. May all businesses with the name "Mac" in them suffer the same fate as the Macworld Expo : )

Dec 19, 08 - 06:54 pm Comment from: Mac Daddy

Phil's a nice guy. He oughtta get a wild standing ovation as soon as he takes the stage. He'd love it!
