Apple files massive iPhone patent application; hints at GPS, video chat
Tuesday, June 03, 2008 - 12:01 PM EST

"Apple has filed for a patent that addresses virtually every aspect of the iPhone, including potential additions such as GPS mapping, media messaging, video calls, and voice commands," Aidan Malley reports for AppleInsider.

"While Apple has filed for patents covering individual aspects of the iPhone experience, including text messaging, a new patent application published late last week promises to roll all these and more into a single, comprehensive document -- one which credits Apple chief Steve Jobs as first in the list of inventors," Malley reports.

"In addition to describing much of what the iPhone is capable of today, the patent for a 'Touch Screen Device' would also safeguard Apple's ability to implement several features that have yet to appear in any hardware or in a software revision for the cellphone. On a software level, the company describes simple additions such as instant messaging and a version of Safari capable of playing in-line content such as Quicktime movies or Flash without having to temporarily leave the browser environment," Malley reports.

"Further welcome additions described in the publication would include a dedicated blogging client, Java software downloads, MMS picture and video messaging, and support for voice-activated commands as well as audio capture," Malley reports.

Come on iPhone 2.0.... June 9th can not come soon enough!

Jun 03, 08 - 11:08 am Comment from: anaknipedro

If I can convince my wife to let me get one of these rumored iPhones with 3g and gps,, my life would be happier and simpler, the U.S. would be powered by nuclear breeder reactors, EV cars would have 2000 mile range, all Muslims would love Americans, and Mitt Romney would become the next president.

None of those will happen, but a guy can dream can't he?

Jun 03, 08 - 11:09 am Comment from: Rudge

Hmm... It looks like I need to wait for iPhone 3.0 for these features. Yes!!!

Jun 03, 08 - 11:21 am Comment from: dallas

Dang 'Empty-Wallet' Syndrom. I'm still using my old Nokia clamshell from 2004. No contract, just no extra money. (Especially not $20 extra / month. Dang you Budget and Good Finantial Sense!)

Jun 03, 08 - 11:24 am Comment from: Britney's Pregnant Sister™

Just help me get better reception and I'll be happy…

Jun 03, 08 - 11:25 am Comment from: Predrag

Rudge:

You actually have two choices: wait for iPhone 3.0 (or perhaps 4.0, or 5.0, depending on what else they might promise), or get iPhone 2.0 in the next two weeks and enjoy it for the next twelve months (assuming the product refresh cycle will remain 12 months). If Apple remains consistent with their pricing (as they have been for the past ten iMac years), iPhone 3.0 will still cost about $400, which will be what you will have paid for iPhone 2.0. You will most likely have several reasonable options next year, if you were set on getting 3.0 (eBay/Craig's list, AT&T;'s upgrade with rebate, handing down the old one to your spouse/children, etc). Besides, the device is only $400. It is not like you're getting a new car, is it?

Jun 03, 08 - 11:26 am Comment from: MacAngus

Dang Iliterasy!

Jun 03, 08 - 11:26 am Comment from: Bartsimpsonhead

I'm gonna be banging on the door of the local Apple store next monday morning till they let me in and thrust a brand-spank-me new iPhone in my hot, sweaty hands smile

Jun 03, 08 - 11:38 am Comment from: Demon

Apple Patents all important smart phone features for current and future smartphone devices. Gates and Ballmer need to get a focused plan for Microsoft and it's future. If Ballmer wants to make MS an internet ad company then MS needs to spin-off the game and the OS businesses as independent companies, close them down, liquidate them out or sell them outright. As MS focuses on competing with Google the company is moving it's priorities to meet that end, which means the Vista disappointments and vapor feature sets will continue in MS Software products.

Dear Lord please bring me an iPhone 3g next Tuesday in Canada, and if this happens you can disregard my prayer for the ruination of Ted Rogers:-)(-;

Dear Penthouse Letters:
(censored except for) ". . . they let me in and thrust a brand-spank-me new iPhone in my hot, sweaty hands."

Jun 03, 08 - 12:01 pm Comment from: Bandit Bill

I don't get it. Even though you want secrecy, why would you go through all the cost/effort of bringing something to full production/shipped etc. then file your patents? What if someone else started filing patents based on all rumors?

Jun 03, 08 - 12:10 pm Comment from: CheekyGit

"I didn't know you could patent smugness and pretension."

But then Micro$lut patented incompetence, insecurity, vulnerabilities, poor performance, overpriced garbage and a fat ass CEO who can't dance.

But then again, everyone knows that.

Jun 03, 08 - 12:14 pm Comment from: @Bandit Bill

Typically several months go by between the actual filing of your patent and the date that the US patent Office "publishes" it online. This patent was FILED on Sept 5, 2007.

Jun 03, 08 - 12:17 pm Comment from: marcos

Nokia, Samsung, Sony, RIM, you name it, they're all going to say they thought of that, before Apple did when they bring out their 5 pound clunker wannabees.

EV cars would be good, but Romney?? Are you nuts??
Talk about a wolf in sheep's clothing. Eugh.

We suck

Jun 03, 08 - 12:26 pm Comment from: Willie G

@ Cheeky Git:

Don't feed the Trolls.

As to the piece at hand, it is not as if all (or for that manner any) of these things listed in the patent app are going to make it to iPhone 2.0. It is just a patent application, and is really there to protect iPhone innovations that we may not see until the third or fourth generation.

Jun 03, 08 - 12:32 pm Comment from: ron

Nobama. Mitt is the only way, what's left (don't like that word) of our country will survive in the way it was founded.
Our choices - three little lib piggies. Let the one who calls himself a republican at least have a decent running mate.

iPhones for the massas, sorry - the masses.

Ron:

The next president will be Obama. No question. We've had enough of this Repug regime's lies and deceit to last several lifetimes.

Jun 03, 08 - 12:53 pm Comment from: anaknipedro

@Ron,

Thank you. You and I are proof that not all Mac users are libs.

Jun 03, 08 - 01:29 pm Comment from: stryfe137

or smart!

Jun 03, 08 - 01:45 pm Comment from: Jeff

@HueyLong, that right we need some new Democrat regime lies deceit to fill in the gap.

Get it through your heads people all politician from all parties are cut from the same cloth, even if they start out wanting to do the right thing the system has them out numbered.

Government is for the rich of the rich, by the rich. Face it you have to have boat loads of cash to run a campaign, that bars 80-90 of the population.

Jun 03, 08 - 02:10 pm Comment from: MCCFR

Thank you. You and I are proof that not all Mac users are libs.

Yep, although there's still hope that both of you might come to your senses – but in ron's case that's a very small hope that can only be expressed using quantum mechanics.

Of course, that's science and the sworn enemy of all Republicans.

Have a nice day.

Jun 03, 08 - 02:22 pm Comment from: poo

@Jeff

I think suicide is the only way out for you then. It's all so obviously futile.

Jun 03, 08 - 02:23 pm Comment from: PC Apologist

Okay, here's the official list of things they WILL do at WWDC:

1) iPhone 2.0 software

2) BIG batch of first-wave approved

3) iPhone 2.0 device to go with it.

4) AT&T;exclusivity (in the USA) will CONTINUE. These devices will accept sims from iPhone-capable cel networks in other countries.

5) AT&T;will announce free Wi-Fi hotspots for all iPhone accounts.

6) Mac Pro update

@ anaknipedro
Slave of your own choice... we all are to certain degree. Although she doesn't look like you can convince her to buy one for you I think you should try to convince her to buy one for her... it is called "proof of concept"... once the management agrees then you can buy one for yourself too.
You chance to do a zero-day exploit of the iPhone 2.0 will begin on June 9th.
Good luck!

Jun 03, 08 - 03:02 pm Comment from: MacDaddy

@ PC Apologist
I like them all but 4 which will not allow competitive pricing for services

Jun 03, 08 - 03:50 pm Comment from: PC Apologist

Mac Daddy -

I didn't say you'd like 'em. But I don't think there's any reason to believe they're going to change it. "Multi-year exclusivity" probably means just what it says. Apple's always been anti-competitive. Why stop now?

Jun 03, 08 - 04:18 pm Comment from: Jeff

@Poo who said it was futile, I have just resigned myself to the realization that the government will line the pockets of there friends tax payers be dammed. Wasting your time trying to change that FACT, is just so much waisted effort that could be channeled into something good like charity work or playing with my kids.

Jun 03, 08 - 05:00 pm Comment from: Nobama

Ron:
Romney has sworn his allegiance to a fraudulent system that hijacks personal autonomy and threatens adherents with expulsion from their own families if that system is questioned.
He's slick and eloquent, but like the people he follows, he's a fraud. We don't need any more fraud in the White House.

Jun 03, 08 - 05:33 pm Comment from: Ampar

"Apple's always been anti-competitive. Why stop now?"

Pretty weak flamebait. You can do better.

Jun 03, 08 - 06:57 pm Comment from: poo

@Jeff

Miriam Webster defines futile as 1 : serving no useful purpose : completely ineffective <efforts to convince him were futile>

Your words... "resigned", "wasting your time"... sounds futile to me.

Jun 04, 08 - 10:02 am Comment from: Austin

I have been trying to make up my mind on if I should buy iPhone for the past year. After reading about the 3G that will hopefully come out soon I have decided to finally get one. Could anyone out there give me some input on a few things if Jobs talks about it Monday:
-If you think it will be available immediately after WWDC?
-Will it be somewhat possible to get upon release and the best place to get one (AT&T;, Apple store, Online)?
-Price?

Thanks!
