Apple gives sneak peek at flagship Beijing store; the first of many Apple Stores to open in China
Thursday, July 17, 2008 - 06:26 PM EST

"Apple allowed a sneak peek at its flagship store in Beijing on Thursday, along with a glimpse of its China strategy," Steven Schwankert reports for IDG News Service.

"The two-level store store will open July 19 in Beijing's Sanlitun entertainment district at 10 a.m., Apple's first in China and its 219th worldwide," Schwankert reports.

"'This is the first of many stores we will open in China," said Ron Johnson, Apple's senior vice president of retail, in remarks at the store. He later added that Apple will open stores 'in Beijing, in Shanghai and beyond,' and confirmed that another store will open in Beijing's Qianmen area, a shopping street south of Tiananmen Square that has been renovated ahead of the Olympic Games, which begin next month," Schwankert reports.

"Apple representatives confirmed that the iPhone will be available in China but gave no date, and declined to comment on any talks with Chinese mobile operators," Schwankert reports. "What Chinese users will be able to get is Apple's complete line of computers and iPods, including the iPod touch."

"What Chinese users will be able to get is Apple's complete line of computers and iPods, including the iPod touch." No surprise. With the possible exception of the Mac Pro and Xserve, all those items are made or assembled there.

This is obvious.

@ Yian - population of europe: .728 bil??

You mean 728 million?

There are more people in China, but more people in Europe, who can afford iPhones & Macs.

Damn, Beijingers will have their Apple store, but with all that sand and smog in the air how can I find it. Oh right, iPhone has that cool map thing, hopefully there is not too much sand otherwise I can't see the screen. Nah, I just wait till they have one in Shanghai, but wait, those Apple stores are everywhere, what's the difference??

Jul 18, 08 - 02:32 pm Comment from: Yian

.728 bil = 728 mil, no? keeping the units constant here.

and law of diminishing returns, europe is probably close to the same size as china no? and there are already apple stores there, while there are none in china
