Apple in negotiations with DoCoMo, Softbank to bring iPhone to Japan
Tuesday, December 18, 2007 - 08:40 AM EDT

Citing "people familiar with the situation," the Wall Street Journal Asia reported Tuesday that Apple CEO Steve Jobs recently met with NTT DoCoMo President Masao Nakamura to discuss a deal to offer its iPhone in Japan - a country where 100 million mobile phone users each buy a new model every two years on average. Apple has also been talking to No. 3 operator Softbank Corp., the report also said.

Apple’s revenue-sharing demands are expected to be the toughest point in the negotiations, but the Journal Asia’s source does not expect Apple and whichever carrier wins the iPhone to have much difficulty coming to an agreement.

@ChrissyOne.

We've know this...but, I'm sure we still will be hearing it from others. Sorta like history repeating itself.

Japan is very very advance in cell phone technology. Is iPhone really gonna make buzz out there?

Dec 18, 07 - 11:06 am Comment from: ChrissyOne

I just hope I'll be able to get a grey-market Domukun signature iPhone.
...as long as he doesn't sound like this.

"Is iPhone really gonna make buzz out there?"

More of a sweet, lyrical chime. The killer apps are Finger Dance Dance Revolution and J-pop karaoke widgets.

On 4 Vicky's, 2 beers, and half a bottle of port? What do you think I am, a lightweight? ;P

Hey, you know Dance Dance Revolution. Either you're very young or you've got teenagers around. Or maybe you're old but like to act like a teenager. Which is it? grin

I'll guess bantamweight. Definitely not flyweight or featherweight.

wink

MacSheikh: More of the ladder. Spelling and pun intended. Sometimes you have to reach up for the gutter.

And what's wrong with that? ;P

bummer...I'm stuck out here with au instead of docomo or softbank...

darth mac has a good point. I'm worried that the iPhone really won't be a huge deal here, simply b/c the screen on pretty every phone now is nearly as big as the iPhones, they can get TV, they can already do visual voicemail, they can do internet faster...Then again, they did line up for the release of the iPod touch!

Apple would have to make a CDMA version of the iPhone for Japan -- doesn't seems likely anytime soon.

Dec 18, 07 - 04:42 pm Comment from: Ampar

"Apple would have to make a CDMA version of the iPhone . . . "

How do you know one hasn't been in development along with other versions for the past few years?

> Japan is very very advance in cell phone technology. Is iPhone really gonna make buzz out there?

True, but there is still no phone like an iPhone. Hopefully, by the time it is released there, version 2.0 will be out along with a new load software from Apple (and approved third party software).
