Apple in new deal for PowerVR graphics in Multi-Touch™ devices?
Thursday, September 04, 2008 - 04:00 PM EST

"Apple is believed to have extended a deal with Imagination Technologies that will see graphics cores from the chipmaker situated in future multi-touch devices for years to come," Kasper Jade and Prince McLean report for AppleInsider.

"In a statement Thursday, Imagination announced that an 'international electronics systems company' has inked a 'multi-year, multi-use license' extension that will grant the unnamed company access to its broad portfolio of current and future PowerVR graphics and video IP cores," Jade and McLean report.

"The iPhone and most other mobile devices use a version of Imagination's PowerVR MBX graphics processor core that supports features of OpenGL ES 1.1. Many mobile chip manufactures, including Apple SoC manufacturing partner Samsung, also have a design license to modify and develop their own SoCs that include the MBX graphics core," Jade and McLean report.

"This lead people familiar with the matter to suggest that Apple, which recently acquired fabless chipmaker PA Semi, had orchestrated a triangular deal in which it would internally develop its own next-generation mobile SoCs that incorporate Imagination's latest graphics technology and then use Samsung to manufacture the chips," Jade and McLean report.

While Apple is buying innovative technology, Microsoft is buying internet advertising companies.

This is just a wild ass guess, but I'm thinking that is why Apple is so far ahead of MS in innovative ideas. But its just a wild ass guess.

By the way, I saw a great new MS motto from a commentor on another blog:

Microsoft - Yesterday's technology, tomorrow!

Change "tomorrow" to "someday maybe with a few dozen service packs".

dd, nobody knows or cares anymore. Sad but true. Vouchers for schools, bypass the teacher's unions. The only way forward.

Bill puked inside a Monkey's ball and Ballmer had to clean it up.

Microsoft - Dark Ages innovation coming some time in the Man Colonization of other Galaxies Age, or so they promise.

or

Microsoft - Keep buying our Vaporware, We need to your money to beat the evil Google you. Ballmer said, "We'll beat Google no matter the cost".

or

Microsoft - Clueless leading the clueless to a clueless future.

or

Microsoft - Internet advertising is our future!! Oh!, wait, Google became a software company? When did that happen?

It don't think that people don't care. They simply do not notice anymore.

I just hope they support OpenGL ES 2.0 soon. The 1.x spec doesn't support shaders, which means no GPU-accelerated Core Image, which effectively means no Quartz Composer.

I'm not totally familiar with the deal but from cob-webby memory the PowerVR deal also includes the old SEGA Dreamcast and Nuon codecs. I read that somewhere before in scattered sources on the web including the ARM site. I could be wrong but it's so similar that maybe they mistyped NEON instead of NUON in reference to the ARM processor.
The Dreamcast obviously adds game superiority for the small but WTF is Nuon? It brings both advanced multimedia a/v strengths, mostly and gaming too. Here's a few links for you if you're curious:

BTW if it's not in there now that CPU(s) from the iPhone/iTouch for games and such needs to be in the Apple TV! Instant game console if they link they use them as a gaming controller and they're part of the way there now with the free "remote app". :D Got the app store already online and they could allow you to play the games you already purchased on your TV and even offer a few higher rez versions too boot! :D

Not just that, but relying solely on the wonderful 'intelligent' Spell Checker programs will not catch something like a correctly spelled but incorrectly used word, like yesterday my boss wrote "I here that..." in an email to everyone, or "over their"...

@MacNugget, freebeer, dd, ron, et al:

It's not that we don't notice or don't care, it's just that most of us aren't going to bother posting on a forum about some insignificant little petty thing that really ultimately doesn't matter.

Oh wait... nevermind.
