Apple introduces iLife ‘09 with Major upgrades to iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand
Tuesday, January 06, 2009 - 01:41 PM EST

Apple today introduced iLife '09, which features major upgrades to iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand, and includes iDVD and an updated version of iWeb(. iPhoto '09 builds on the ability to automatically organize photos into Events by adding Faces and Places as breakthrough new ways to easily organize and manage your photos. iMovie '09 expands on the revolutionary super fast movie creation introduced in iMovie '08 by adding the depth users want through powerful easy- to-use new features such as the incredible new Precision Editor, video stabilization, advanced drag and drop, and animated travel maps. GarageBand '09 introduces a whole new way to help you learn to play piano and guitar with 18 basic lessons and optional lessons from top artists such as Sara Bareilles, John Fogerty, Norah Jones and Sting. iLife '09 is included with every new Mac(R) purchase and available as a $79 upgrade for existing users.

"iLife continues to be one of the biggest reasons our customers choose to get a Mac," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, in the press release. "With iLife '09, we've made working with photos, making movies and learning to play music a lot more fun, and iMovie users are especially going to love the advanced but easy-to-use new features."

iPhoto '09 makes it even easier to browse and search photos, not only by when they were shot (Events), but by who appears in them (Faces) and where they were taken (Places). iPhoto automatically scans photos to detect people's faces and when you assign a name to any face iPhoto will automatically find more pictures of that person. The library can be searched by name or browsed using the new Faces View. Places automatically imports photo location data from a GPS-enabled camera or any iPhone or you can manually assign a location to any photo, group of photos or event. Once iPhoto knows where photos were taken, you can easily explore them with a simple search or an interactive map. iPhoto '09 lets you easily publish photos to Facebook or Flickr. Photos published to Facebook include assigned names, and name tags added on Facebook sync back to iPhoto. You can also share photos by creating a themed slideshow to play on your Mac, iPhone or iPod(R), or create a beautiful travel book, complete with customized maps of your journey.

iMovie '09 adds powerful, yet easy-to-use new features to let you create a movie quickly, or add refinements and special effects to your project if you have more time. Drag and drop one clip on top of another to reveal new advanced editing options, including replace, insert, audio only, and even picture-in-picture or green screen. With the revolutionary Precision Editor, you can skim and click on a magnified filmstrip to view clips up close and fine tune any edit, like identifying precisely how much to keep, where to cut, use sound from one clip with video from another and more. iMovie '09 analyzes video and reduces camera shake in clips when added to your project. New titles, transitions, cinematic effects, speed changes and animated travel maps add professional polish to your movie.

GarageBand '09, the updated version of Apple's popular software used by millions to play and record music, now gives budding musicians a fun new way to learn to play piano and guitar. Basic Lessons let you learn the fundamentals at your own pace with Apple instructors in beautiful HD video synchronized to animated instruments and notation. Artist Lessons feature original artists showing how to play their hit songs with everything from finger positions and techniques to the story behind the song. Choose from lessons by popular artists including: Sara Bareilles, Colbie Caillat, John Fogerty, Ben Folds, Norah Jones, Sarah McLachlan, Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump, OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder and Sting. Artist Lessons are sold separately at the new GarageBand Lesson Store, available inside the GarageBand '09 application. GarageBand '09 also includes exciting new guitar amp and stomp- box effects, and Magic GarageBand Jam that lets you play along with a virtual band that you create.

iLife '09 includes iWeb '09 for authoring custom websites and iDVD '09 for creating DVDs. iWeb '09 adds new iWeb Widgets, such as iSight(R) video and photos, a countdown timer, YouTube video and RSS feeds. New integrated FTP publishing allows you to publish your website to virtually any hosting service and updates to your site can now be automatically added to your Facebook profile.

iLife '09 will be available this month for a suggested retail price of US$79 through the Apple Store, Apple's retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. The iLife Up-To-Date upgrade package is available to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after January 6, 2009 for a shipping and handling fee of $9.95. Artist Lessons are available through the GarageBand Lesson Store for $4.99 each.

iLife '09 requires Mac OS X version 10.5.6 or later, a Macintosh computer with an Intel processor, a PowerPC G5 or 867 MHz or faster PowerPC G4, 512MB of RAM (1GB recommended), QuickTime 7.5.5 or later (included), a DVD drive for installation and 4GB of available disk space. iPhoto print services and GarageBand Artist Lessons are available in select countries.

The Mac Box Set looks interesting but I'll wait until Snow Leopard to see if they do one and get all three at the same time.

Bad timing for Box Set, I had my finger on Buy Now, but now I am thinking I should wait till SL comes out and save few bucks.

UK price is £69 and US price is $79.

I'm sure the UK price has gone quite a bit. Maybe Amazon will do it cheaper.

This still bug the hell out of me.
"The iLife Up-To-Date upgrade package is available to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after January 6, 2009 for a shipping and handling fee of $9.95." The should extend back at least 1 month. Note I did not buy a new Mac for x-mas but a lot of people did and they should be pissed, they should all use there 30 Return, take back your Mac and ask for a new one with iLife09 for $9.95!
Also this would mean there would be a tone of Computers on the referb store.

Bummed that there was no Snow Leopard info.

iLife 09 for a 867Mhz G4? Sounds like there could be a possibility for Snow Leopard too for G4.

Jan 06, 09 - 02:23 pm Comment from: KenC

So, the choice is a Family Pack of iLife, iWork and then Snow Leopard. That'll be $400, probably. $100, $100 and $200.

A BoxSet is what, $170? And, it's not a Family Pack BoxSet. So, I'll need to buy 3 of them? That's $510. Yeah, yeah, I can install on more than one computer, but that would be unethical. Plus, the iWork, I last installed needed a serial number. I don't think I'll wait for the Snow Leopard BoxSet, I'll just get the iLife and iWork Family Packs now, and buy Snow Leopard when it comes.

Jan 06, 09 - 02:25 pm Comment from: @Lilochris

That requirement is probably because iLife 09 requires Leopard and Leopard requires an 866 MHz or better G4.

Jan 06, 09 - 02:33 pm Comment from: Jeff

@KenC there is a family Pack Box set.
$229.00

"Sounds like there could be a possibility for Snow Leopard too for G4."

Except its INTEL ONLY.

Sure wish they did more with iWeb and gave us a clue on SL's release date.

Jan 06, 09 - 02:46 pm Comment from: dukemeiser

FINALLY built in FTP for iWeb. About FRICKIN time Apple.

Jan 06, 09 - 03:21 pm Comment from: MK

I hope they fixed also DV video quality issue in iMovie

Jan 06, 09 - 03:25 pm Comment from: Rudge

Ah, I'm glad to see that there's a new iLife and that it still supports us older G4 owners. I installed the early release of Leopard on my old 1GHz TiBook and found that my free copy of iPhoto stopped working (as well as my Airport). I had to actually go back to Tiger for awhile.

This new release might be the coaxing I need to buy the iLife box set and upgrading back to Leopard.

Jan 06, 09 - 03:48 pm Comment from: Predrag

And still no way to burn AVCHD Blu-ray content on DVD-R through iLife. Those iMovie upgrades are nice and all, but if majority of HD camcorders now are AVCHD tapeless, you'd think that the new iLife would allow us to elegantly author our home movies onto DVD (DL) without having to go through the clunky Toast song-and-dance routine. Didn't Jobs say that we now no longer need FireWIre because most camcorders are now tapeless, therefore USB-only? Well, since he expects us to use those tapeless AVCHD models, he could at least provide us the tools to use them without having to buy third-party work-around solutions. I'd much rather not edit my HD movie in a disc-burning application.

That was rather disappointing...

Jan 06, 09 - 04:07 pm Comment from: Connor MacBook

@Predrag,

Apple believes most home movie makers don't bother with physical media anymore; they just post it to YouTube.

Jan 06, 09 - 04:28 pm Comment from: Predrag

Connor MacBook,

Yes, but it does thoroughly contradict Steve's statement that the "year 2007 was the Year of HD". You don't really post on YouTube in HD.

And believing in the death of physical media seems awfuly premature; very minuscule percentage of even developed world has fat enough bandwidth pipes for delivery of HD.

Jan 06, 09 - 05:11 pm Comment from: Crabs

Just reading over the keynote, I thought the new iLife stuff sounded pretty "meh," but when I went and watched the videos on Apple's website, I'm way more impressed with it. Especially iPhoto and GarageBand.

Now if only I did have to pay 80 bucks to upgrade...

Jan 06, 09 - 06:49 pm Comment from: cw

I will give up on Apple, if they don't give me recordable blu-ray.

Don't bother with physical media anymore? I can trade/sell my dvds----give to a friend, trade with a friend, sell them to a store that buys used dvds.
I'm sorry, but you have to be a real DUMB ASS to think you can do the same thing on the internet ---- right NOW TODAY!!
I have not heard enough about this lack of thought, in jumping into internet. Like it's everything. It's not.

Jan 06, 09 - 08:12 pm Comment from: Clear of the Distortion Field

May I be the first to say that the Mac Box Set is a first step towards future ,Apple cheeziness. Maybe they'll package it in a tray for '10, you know a cardboard flat with individual boxes, wrapped in clear, shrink wrap. Kinda hit that nostalgia for the cereal assortments. Which one are you trying to unload Apple? The one with no sugar?

Jan 06, 09 - 08:15 pm Comment from: Clear of the Distortion Field

And look at the iLife graphics - "I like it, hey, Stevie!"

Jan 06, 09 - 08:51 pm Comment from: mike

I was thinking, "Wait, what? the Mac Box Set"... is that supposed to be installed on Generic x86 PC's.

I thought that...

Oh, its for Macs. Huh? We already have this stuff. I think the name needs work, or something, it just sounds too bland to take off.
