QuickTime 7 is a real disaster. I've seen better much software from Apple.

I would have to agree, Quicktime has been not working properly for me since 7 came out. I dont even use it to the limit and it still has video playback issues.

No sheet! I've been having some strange problems with my broadband connection (via cable modem). Spent hours with the cable company to figure out it wasn't the cable modem but the iMac, or more specifically OS X, which essentially made the connection dorment, requiring a modem restart etc. Off course it all started immediately after Quicktime 7.2 update. Now getting ready to do a clean install to get rid of this gremlin :-(

Proof read your post before you go around complaining about a product that works for most users and is only creating a problem for someone trying to use it in a less than perfect environment.

@ Jeff, Keep looking....you will either eventually get to see better software or a real disaster!

The QT7.2 issue may be real, for some people, but it ISN'T generic. Got it installed on several computers here with no difficulties noted at all. CFM stuff all works fine.... except for Office which never worked fine for reasons that only MS understands.

I think the most important thing Apple needs to do with Quicktime is to provide a download site at apple.com where you can go to download any or all the codecs that are available for QT. This of course includes all the 3rd party codecs. The free ones would be free and the ones that cost you would be there as a link to the original web site. In addition, beside each codec would be a list of the media types that the codec plays. Apple should put all this together in an easy to use installer.

Reason I say this is because of all the people I know who use a Mac, the most common complaint I hear is "it won't play such-n-such video", when I know it can if they had the right codec. Furthermore, most people don't know how to track down a codec and install it in the right place.

Full time video editor here, and co-manager of 8 video workstations: No problems at all on any of our setups which include Dual G5's, Quadcores and Octcores.

Even so, I have been following ongoing issues with QT7 on these threads as well as other threads. Either we've been lucky, or these issues tend to be somewhat isolated. (We use QT Pro.)

I'm using QT 7.2 on a Dual 450 G4 using 2 gigs of ram. The only thing it will play is the audio track of a video i.e. movie trailers, Lynda.com tutorials etc. It does seem to play HD trailers though. Since QT 7.2 seems to work for some and isn't an app wide problem, any idea what I can do?

Quicktime broke my DIVX playback... on a Mac too. Boo Hoo Apple. Play fair now.

I lost the ability to play AVI's that had AC3 audio. I had to reinstall the codec, but once I did, they played fine.

Shoot for video playback i use VLC much better then finding a bunch of third party codecs. Flip for mac for windows media if i ever play win media files at all. Everything else that isn't played by what I got most likely isn't worth watching anyway.

I had issues with Rosetta apps (Microsoft Office, Quicken, ect.) after installing this upgrade. After reading through a thread on Apple's support forums it was discovered to be an issue with the beta of Java 6. Since I had installed this beta, I followed instructions for removing it and re-installing; my Rosetta apps now work and I have no other issues with Quicktime.

I lost the ability to watch my favorite pron mpegs in Safari. I have to download and then watch in QT. WTF?

QT 7.2 invalidated applications relying on Rosetta on my Intel PB. Talked to Apple and they directed me to reinstall all my applications which was a non-starter for me. Talked to microsoft who told me to download the combined intel updater for osx which didn't work. I also have Java 6 beta installed and need it because I do java development. Procedure that I used did not require me to uninstall Java 6 beta.

I've been having issues with my cable modem broad-band connection for a few months now -- erratic loss of internet access. It returns spontaneously, though, sometimes only after 20-30 minutes, other times after a few hours. During the disconnect periods, I've tried resetting the modem, etc., but without success.

Tomorrow AM a Time-Warner technician is scheduled to come to my house to evaluate things further (I already changed out the cable modem last week, but this didn't solve my problem).

I'm running 10.4.10 on several Mac's in my home. My main machine in a G5 Quad with 4.5GB of RAM. I've had no problems with QT7 up to now (and I'm not sure if my internet access problems are related to QT7). I do use QT Pro also.

Any thoughts or ideas from anyone would be appreciated -- thanks!

Oh the PC world we live in!

I installed the latest Quicktime update on my Macbook and the next morning I got the folder with the flashing question mark. Hardware diagnostics said everything was fine, yet system profile did not recognize my hard drive. I made a genius bar appointment at the Lenox store iand the pretend genius said my 40 hard drive was toast and wanted $230 bucks to replace a 40 gig drive!!! Talk about insult to injury, not to mention the cost of data recovery. I was only a month and a half past my warranty.
I am extremely disgruntled, and failure to get any supposed revolutionary customer service has cost Apple more money over the long term than they can imagine. Keeping me happy would have been so easy and so cheap. Apple may be 1 in customer service, but at the Lenox Apple Store, they have permanently put a lifetime bad taste in my mouth, not to mention all the PC guys here at work who WERE interested in buying a Mac! Today, Apple, you LOST! The grapevine is the most important thing you have, and today it is sour.

nsapap - I can't suggest anything that might help solve your problem, but I can tell you that my setup here sounds identical to yours - same software, same hardware, same ISP, and I've had no problems at all after the 7.2 update.

QT killed my Flip4Mac export - no work around has helped.

hurry up Apple and fix this.

You grapevine contribution will be taken with a grain of salt.

7.2 broke QT's ability to play wmv files on my iMac. Downloading the latest DivX codec seemed to fix it, although I've no idea why.

From the symptoms I would say your hard drive DID get toasted, and probably not by the QuickTime update. Can you say "coincidence"? I haven't seen anyone else reporting such an issue in relation to QuickTime 7.2

As for the Apple genius service complaints, it sounds to me like you think "quality" customer service should mean that they give you the diagnosis you want to hear, donate free hardware installation work on machines that are out of warranty, and compensate for free for your lack of proper planning (aka backups).

Hard drives die. It happens. It sucks. I feel bad for you. But I don't see anything in your version of events that suggests poor customer service on Apple's part.

Like every update put out by Apple, I hear a few people whine and cry about how it has raped their dog, punched their mother and peed in their corn flakes-all the while I am trouble free.

Makes me wonder what the hell the rest of you are doing to your computers.

Well, if you had backed up your data (I'm sure you've heard this suggested before) with Super Duper, you could reload your stuff quick and easy. And you don't need to spend $230 for a new hard drive. Buy one and install it yourself. Even a blind monkey could do it.

If you think QuickTime is bad on the Mac you should try it on Windows! Spyware everywhere, lodges itself in the taskbar and then is virtually incapable of doing anything.

Thanks for the response. I just had the cable guy here at my home this AM. He replaced a signal splitter thinking this would help my situation. Not even 5 minutes after he left, my signal went out, but for < 60 seconds. (No kidding!). That was 2 hours ago. It's been fine since. I can't believe my internet connection problem has anything to do with QT. We'll see if the new signal splitter solves my problem.
