Apple iPad stuns mobile computing market, sends overwhelmed competitors back to drawing boards
Tuesday, May 25, 2010 - 09:32 AM EDT

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad"The battle between Apple's iPad and other computing devices has been extended. At least one major chip maker says that a number of tablets, netbooks and smartbooks originally designed to compete with the iPad have been pushed back to next year," Elizabeth Woyke reports for Forbes.

"Though consumer electronics manufacturers typically aim to release products in time for the busy holiday season, an executive for chip maker Freescale Semiconductor says several important devices will now likely debut afterward, at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2011," Woyke reports. "The shift could affect the fortunes of gadget makers, as well as components suppliers, contract manufacturers and retailers."

MacDailyNews Take: So, Apple will have Christmas 2010 all to themselves. That should be profitable. Can you say, "insurmountable lead?" We knew you could.

Woyke reports, "The iPad's better-than-expected performance and reception is driving the delay, says Glen Burchers, director of global consumer segment marketing for Austin, Texas-based Freescale. 'The iPad set the bar very high … most products that were going to come out [earlier] would not have fared well against it.' Burchers says rival manufacturers were caught off guard by the gadget's relatively low price ($499-$829), stable performance and long battery life (up to 10 hours). After the iPad's debut, these manufacturers realized they needed to cut their own prices or spiff up their devices to stay competitive, he says."

Woyke reports, "Matching the iPad's smooth performance is even trickier--and is being aggravated by confusion over operating systems, says Burchers... The array of choices has stumped some manufacturers, further stalling plans. 'Software is where all the work needs to go in the next six to nine months,' says Burchers... Some of these adjustments are already public. HP's 'Slate' tablet, first touted in January, is being reworked to accommodate HP's April acquisition of Palm. Microsoft recently decided not to market its 'Courier' tablet. But Burchers says there have been a lot of secret product tweaks and cancellations, as well."

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: Our iPads' battery life is shockingly long. And the devices' performance is shockingly fast. Of course, the user interface is stellar. Would-be competitors are stuck with using off the shelf-processors (vs. Apple's home-grown designs) and/or somebody else's OS - they are going to have a hell of a time trying to go from standing there like deer in the headlights to "competing" with Apple - barring blatant patent infringement, of course. (Right, Google?)

For mobile computing device makers not named Apple, our prediction: Pain.

Every good boy and girl is hoping for an iPad in their stocking or under the tree. Not those other lump of coal iKiller turd devices.

The iPad will be in most countries and in very short supply. What is a netbook the young child will ask!

LOL Love that Mr.T icon! LOL

The problem is that the entire industry revolves around, and follows the orders of, Microsoft. With MS hopelessly lost and adrift, who do the box stuffers follow now?

HP looks to have a strategy. But the rest?

My iPad has been selling itself. Even, when I go to a empty corner or put my Bose headphone on so I will not be asked a question. I still see a lot of people watching as I use it. Strange though, 99.9 percent I see are still on laptops! I rarely see an iPad?

What is up with that?

It is not a poor area, Manhattan Beach, California!

Oh well, the tablet has a huge market to fill now.

iPad sales are going to be sick come Christmas, as long as Apple can ramp up to the level of demand.

On the Monday after the release date I was the only person on the train with one, and over the next few weeks there was a smattering of them. The number exploded with the 3G release--last Friday I sit down and the guy next to me has his iPad, and then that evening when I went home the girl in the seat on the other side of the aisle had hers out.

Last Friday I had to cover something in Family Court and one of the court employees had brought his newly bought iPad in; by the end of the day half the court staff were talking about buying them, and one guy had already called the King of Prussia Apple Store to reserve his 64GB G3.

What I'm wondering is this--the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch must have already outsold all other Unix based systems, but have they outsold all other Unix based systems combined? Probably have.

I love my iPad, but I was very intrigued by what I saw at Google I/O. Apple has the early lead, and being first out of the gate is great, but I think that Google has a lot of power behind it and Android is making inroads into what was previously Apple's territory. Apple needs to step up the inovation and features of the iPad, and hopefully we will see some nice features on the iPhone 4G. And why is OS4 for the iPad going to be released months after the update for the phone if they are essentially the same OS????

" Microsoft recently decided not to market its 'Courier' tablet."

How can they decide that when something doesn't even exist? Shouldn't they make a few prototypes first? A conceptual video is hardly a prototype. Some of the iPhone concept videos done by amateurs were better.

Without Apple our daily lives would be pretty different. Even IF, and that's a big if, anyone could make a better mp3 player, better OS, better phone, better hardware, or better tablet, AND better user experience I would still want to see my money go to the company that moves the ball forward. Until anyone else mentioned above does something that isn't derivative of Apple, then that's where I want to spend my support.

These companies can't just catch up by making a better version of what Apple makes, and that is already asking a lot.

May 25, 10 - 10:44 am Comment from: justme2

@papasmack: Only thing I can think of is OS 4.0 is going to have some capabilities unique to the iPad and the larger real estate...additional Multi-touch gestures, perhaps?

THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I found this article early this morning. Can you believe a tech co. finally admitted the whole tech industry can't compete with Apple's IPad on any front. User Interface, Hardware, ecosystem, battery life? I CAN!!! I wonder how many netbooks the competition will sell this year. Probably very few. Apple is the GREATEST. Long Live APPLE. Long Live STEVE JOBS!!!!

Spark: Yeah, there are a hell of a lot of UNIX systems out there. But iPhone/iPad were up to 37 million in sales more than a year ago.

Too soon to say there won't be competition for Christmas.

May 25, 10 - 11:14 am Comment from: iphonerulez

Most of the rival companies were never fully committed to a tablet. I'm fairly sure it was more like an afterthought. "Hey, cheap netbooks are doing OK so let's try putting together a tablet made from leftover netbook parts." And it gave birth to the HP Slate. I'm dead sure that most companies didn't even realize there was a huge consumer tablet market. Apple's sold more tablets in two months than all PC vendors had sold in years.

And yet you've got these cocky assholes like Nvidia saying that Apple did it all wrong and Nvidia will do a lot better by adding 1080p and Flash support. Can you believe that crap? Most users of iPads are highly satisfied with their experience of ownership with it exceeding their expectations. That's not something to be taken lightly.

May 25, 10 - 11:23 am Comment from: m159

"these manufacturers realized they needed to cut their own prices or spiff up their devices to stay competitive"

Okay, two things. First, they will have to do both, which would be daunting enough. Then to say "spiff up" is probably accurate to the way they think, which is to say, Apple's competition does not start with fundamental design concepts, nor relentlessly build the best possible user experience.

I LOVE this quote "'Software is where all the work needs to go in the next six to nine months,' says Burchers..." - hah! like they're going to duplicate the iPhone OS experience in "six to nine months". Management cluelessness about software and its development complexities knows no ends. And of course if they throw twice the number of people at it, the projects will be completed in half the time, right? Right??

May 25, 10 - 12:29 pm Comment from: LordRobin

B-b-but! It's just an oversized iPod touch! You can't do anything with it! It has no physical keyboard! It can't replace a laptop! Blah blah blah!

Do you think all the naysayers really believed all their FUD or were they just desperately trying to prevent the inevitable?

I don't have an iPad because I don't think I need one (yet). But my wife's iPod touch was getting long in the tooth. Since she almost never listened to music on it, using it just for Safari and apps, we upgraded her to an iPad. I swear, sometimes it seems like she never puts the thing down.

"Just an oversized iPod touch." That's like saying an H-bomb is just an oversized A-bomb.

Boy oh boy, can you believe that these idiots still keep trying to compete with Apple with Windblows? No matter what kind of tablet they create, price, speed, battery life, color, size, screen, nothing can or will ever match or beat the iPad.

ITS THE OS STUPID !!!

May 25, 10 - 01:43 pm Comment from: matt

Damn right. The iPad really is a game-changer. It doesn't need flash (even though there are times I wish I could visit homestarrunner.com!)...

I don't know much about Palm's WebOS but I can tell you right now that Microsoft needs to create an all-new tablet OS if they could ever dream of competing with Apple. You can't just shoehorn some other OS into a new device! The specialized OS is part of the iPad's amazing speed and battery life. It's not just iPhone OS ported (which in itself wasn't just Mac OS X ported), it's an OS made just for the iPad, and that's a big part of why the iPad is such a great device. Can't wait for OS 4.0!

Are you kidding? More like the lack of choices to compete against iPhone OS on iPad, especially after it goest to 4.0.

When people say the iPad is just a big iPod Touch, just tell them that their laptop is just an oversized netbook.

May 25, 10 - 02:49 pm Comment from: Hugh Jorgan

Using JUMP app to use windows shows why a tablet that just runs windows isn't a satisfying experience. It is however, cool to have it available as a single app. I use my iPad to access my company laptop during the day while making sales calls. I can log into the VPN and find info I need, I use the notepad and wireless apple keyboard to type long notes occasionally. Most of the time the virtual keyboard works just fine. The nice thing about an iPad is that aside from the main apps no 2 ipads are alike. It currently has over 250,000 available applications, many of which haven't been upgraded to run optimized for iPad yet. Once the onslaught of new iPad optimized apps start showing up the options grow exponentially. Our house already has 3 ipads 16, 32, & 64 wifi. My wife and teenage daughter never put them down.

Anyone who can't see the value of an iPad because it doesn't do everything, just has little imagination. The only company that seems to realize what is happening is HP. While it will likely be second or third banana to Apple ALWAYS, HP understood the experience and bought palm to try to compete device for device. Too bad for them that this is the same thing we are seeing begin to mature with the iPhone. We saw it originally with the iPod.

I suspect that Apple has a long roadmap in action now. With google's new TV experiment announced and revealed, Aapple is probably late in development of th Apple TV on steroids. It could be a large thin touch display that is just a giant Ipad to hang on a wall perhaps? I have know idea what will come next but I know it will probably be pretty sweet and will come to dominate another segment of the consumer electronics world.
