Apple iPhone ad hints at mystery app

“In looking through Apple’s newly posted iPhone ads on their site, I noticed something interesting,” Dr. Macinstein reports for – natch – Macenstein.

“In every shot we have ever seen of the iPhone’s main menu thus far, there are 3 rows of icons for applications (2 rows of 4 icons, and the 3rd row has 3 icons) for a total of 11 icons,” Macinstein reports.

“However, there is an odd shot in the newly released ‘How- To’ iPhone ad, where the screen goes from the traditional 11 icon view, to a new 12 icon view… Apparently some mystery app has pushed the icons down 1 slot, but we cannot see what it is,” Macinstein reports.

“The idea that the iPhone will add functionality and apps via software updates is nothing new; Apple has mentioned as much,” Macinstein reports. “[But] what is the mystery app that has bumped all these apps down one spot?”

  1. Ahhh… but we don’t know what that mystery app is and we’ve got 26 more days to contemplate, talk about, wonder, guess, and dig about to discover it. And that kind of publicity can’t be bought.

Apple KNOWS fanboys will pour over every word and picture morsel put out there and what better way to keep the [free] publicity rolling then to keep the mystery app a mystery – at least for now?

Tonight your discovery sits in the “upcoming stories” on Digg. By next week it could be a very big story on the “popular stories” garnering more publicity.

  2. what is the mystery app that has bumped all these apps down one spot?

Uh, the “Tricks are for Kids” button?

No, the nuke the Middle East and let Allah sort them out button?

No, the lets pull out odf Iraq prematurely like cowards button!

No? Ahh, it’s the nuke Redmond button!!

Help anyone, throw me a bone here.

  3. It took me a while. It’s only on frame for a fraction of a second. It’s right at the beginning, and the finger presses the “iPod” button for the first time… Check out the article and it has frame grabs from the high-res version on the Apple website…

  4. Then click on the damn link for screenshots!

It’s very brief but I see it.

Pause the video at exactly 27 seconds and you see the icon arrangement has changed. There are 4 at the bottom row when there’s normally 3.

  5. whoa!!!

take another look, this is incredible. look closely at the glare coming off the phone during the shot of the “12th app”. you can see who is operating the phone.

    do you see?

it’s lee harvey oswald. holy shit. i bet that means the “12th app” is some sorta grassy knoll widget.

    someone call oliver stone.

  6. take a look at the calamari ad, 17 seconds left to go when they hit the maps button, there is a button two over to the right of maps, which i don’t think has been seen before, so i think there may be more than there showing us.

  7. “take a look at the calamari ad, 17 seconds left to go when they hit the maps button, there is a button two over to the right of maps, which i don’t think has been seen before, so i think there may be more than there showing us.“

It’s called “clock”. You can like, set the time n stuff. It’s gonna move civilization to new heights.

  8. I have it. After I downloaded the video and ran it through my TI-994A Video Toaster Oven, I found that it is what Borak was asking the car dealer for, a P@ssy Magnet. Press the button and
    watch the p@ssy come.

Just a, give me the damn phone now, thought

  9. TowerTone: “Not me at 5:54, God Damn you”

Don’t worry, if that really is you, TT, no regular reader here thought that above post was you. We’re aware that MDN has no log ins, and some dipshit is posting pretending to be you.

MDN, please remove the fake TT posts, thanks.

  10. It is the Anti-Stage Fright widget from Wedgies Widgets. Can’t go once you get to the urinal? The ASF widget shoots cool air over your member to assist you with your streaming.

Also, it’s compatible with special retro-inspired parachute pants available in July at Old Gravy.

Feel left out? Don’t worry ladies. Wedgies Widgets will have you “covered” soon….

  11. Very observant, it’s in the “How-to” ad. You just see the bottom of the bottom row icons, and they’ve got four now, not three. So, they’re right, something has shifted all the icons down one spot.

For those who don’t know, you can download the iPhone ads by opening Safari’s View Source and then snipping out the .mov filename and pasting in the downloads window. That’ll put the .mov file in your downloads folder for you to click thru it frame by frame to your hearts content.

  12. @pyeman: “It’s called “clock”. You can like, set the time n stuff. It’s gonna move civilization to new heights.”

Um.. no, actually you’re wrong, the Clock is normally at the end of the 3rd row on all the previous iPhone product shots, not at the left of the bottom row. So something else above the clock pushed it down to the bottom row, thus the “mystery” app.

It’s a Mystery App because it’s not shown in the picture at all, only the result of its existance pushing already known apps down a slot. And only in an obscure close up shot. None of the far away shots show the clock on the bottom row, so we don’t know what it is, yet.

  13. This wasn’t an editing or graphics error. As we all know, Apple doesn’t make mistakes. They’re trying to keep the free publicity train moving forward… nice move don’t ya think? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> Hey, it worked!

  14. The UI is probably added in CG anyway after the ad was shot to make it look nice and clean, no strange reflections, etc. Makes things easy. The “12th app” is nothing more than the CG artist’s mistake when setting up that bit of the ad.

PS. hang on tight TowerTone – don’t let this impersonating git get to you

  15. It summons Al Gore to put you to sleep with a personal lullaby about planetary destruction.

Lullaby and goodnight. Go to sleep you’re totally doomed…
It’s not my fault, it’s all yours… Carbon credits are so cool!
La dah deeh da dah dah daahhhh…
It’s not my fault, it’s yours!
La dah deeh da dah dah daahhhh…
Hush now and get on all fours.

  16. actually, if u look closely, every time he changes modes, the settings button moves over, i don’t know why, but if u watch, it does, and then it moves back over while it’s going back home. i think that’s what they’re seeing.

  17. Anyone remember that band called the Beatles? And remember how everyone over-analyzed everything they did? People thought there were secret messages, people thought Paul was dead, peopl thought that if you played a song backwards…. you get the idea. Well, it got so out of hand, that the Beatles themselves started doing random things just to get the people talking. And isn’t Steve-O a big Beatles fan? Just wondering….

  19. that is the “transporter” button which BG jokingly said wouldn’t be released by SJ in 5-10 yrs

what do u know, they’re playing up the crowd.

(Asked about the next 5-10 years)
Bill: I don’t think Steve’s going to announce his transporter

(Asked about the greatest misunderstanding between their relationship)
Steve: We’ve kept our marriage secret for over a decade.

apparently, SJ is keeping something else secret aside from their marriage, this time keeping it from BG

do we have grass here? pot? hehehe.

“If you’re gonna pose and pretent to be a regular on this site by hijacking their handle, at least be as funny as the original.”

That’s funny! You gave me a great idea. Any time a joke bombs I can claim it was an impostor. (It’s not a split personality. It’s a party!)

(This message was brought to you by the Ape Harm Alert Dysfunctional Society.)

  21. I’m thinking of changing carriers in January (from Cingular to Verizon) when my current contract’s up…but I really want an iPhone.

Hmmm…wonder how much a Mark I model iPhone will bring on eBay in January? Maybe enough to cover standard depreciation/pay for new phone…

  22. It’s a icon to activate the laser projector from Microvision…It shoots a full color projection onto any surface creating an image as big as you want…anywhere on any surface…Except black…
