Apple iPhone launches new Internet age
Thursday, July 31, 2008 - 09:28 AM EST

"A quarter of a century ago, Apple sparked a personal computing revolution with the Macintosh 128K," Marie Boran reports for Independent.ie.

"In the intervening years, the internet as we know it has been firmly shackled to the personal computer, mildly interrupted by mobile operators with their walled-garden approach to getting connected," Boran reports.

"It is 2008 and the latest iPhone 3G has unleashed the full promise of the mobile internet, breaking our chains to the desktop and smashing through the walled-gardens of prescribed internet," Boran reports.

Boran reports, "Mobile web is now a real and viable opportunity. We are witnessing the birth of a new internet age."

"'It’s about having a touchscreen and having ultra-responsivity. When you see the touch interaction working on an iPhone you realise it is a generation ahead of all these other devices,' says Conor O’Neill, CEO of technology consultancy firm Argolon and editor of Web2Ireland.org," Boran reports.

Yeah, it launched us back to the internet stone age before Flash.

Jul 31, 08 - 08:41 am Comment from: BillH

Flash is the stone age!

Jul 31, 08 - 08:49 am Comment from: shen

flash?!?

buahahahahahaha!

thanks, i needed that laugh today!

R2, you need to throw that old raincoat away.

Jul 31, 08 - 08:55 am Comment from: megaME

Some of my coworkers got the new Dare because they don't like ATT.

I can accept that. ATT isn't that great here in the boondocks.

But listening to them talk about how cool the touch interface is and good enough and close enough to an iPhone is driving me crazy.

They just don't get it.

Jul 31, 08 - 08:56 am Comment from: justified

Flash.

How retro.

Jul 31, 08 - 08:57 am Comment from: Macaday

Flash. For people who prefer making things to actually using them...

Cramer made an idiot of himself last night pumping nothing but the RIMM Blackberry Bold, saying it was the new babe magnet instead of the iPhone. He also kinda forgot about the App Store. He said sell AAPL and buy RIMM based upon the Bold. This guy truly does not do his homework...I live to see him eat his words...he is clueless...he was also wrong on the market share for both Apple and Rimm. He couldn't shut up about RIMM for some reason based upon current vaporware...must have pocketed some under the table promotion change. He also called the guy who can't quit writing about Steve Jobs health his buddy. That says it all...what a dork!
It's a shame people listen to this guy.

Jul 31, 08 - 09:05 am Comment from: Randian

@Blue Dream

People listen to Cramer? Where? In the Home for the Hearing Impaired?

Jul 31, 08 - 09:14 am Comment from: pDK

@MegaMe
Keep throwing the app store in their faces. The envy will follow soon thereafter.

Jul 31, 08 - 09:14 am Comment from: Mac+

After the "New Age" Movement, now comes the "New Internet Age" Movement...
I always thought Steve Jobs was somewhat a guru, now the all world got the proof.

Jul 31, 08 - 09:17 am Comment from: i want my iTele

When am i going to get apps that work with my Apple iTele? I need something useful to do during in intergalactic teleportation trips. I mean, what do you expect me to do during a teleport? Look at the stars!

People listen to Cramer? Where? In the Home for the Hearing Impaired?

Please, I have Mac using clients who are hearing impaired. They don't listen to that gas bag Cramer either.

Jul 31, 08 - 09:24 am Comment from: R2

You guys can bitch and moan about Flash all you want to. It's still all over the place, you can't do dick without it except view news sites, blogs and forums.

The iClone that comes up with full Flash will have a tremendous advantage over its predecessors.

Jul 31, 08 - 09:35 am Comment from: Crabapple

"Sweeeeeeeeeet!!!!!"

Jul 31, 08 - 09:36 am Comment from: Jamie

I can't wait until iPhone OS X 2.0.1 that will hopefully fix the crashes, forced restarts and forced restores that I've had to do 4 times, and I've only had the iPhone for 12 days.

Pissed off, but optimistic Apple will fix it.

Jul 31, 08 - 09:37 am Comment from: Falkirk

"The iClone that comes up with full Flash will have a tremendous advantage over its predecessors."

@R2, you're wrong on this one. There are now between 7 to 8 million iPhones out there but studies show that they represent 75% of all mobile web visits. Seventy-five percent. Apple is not going to tie itself to a proprietary standard like Flash that it doesn't control. With iPhones dominating the web traffic, the web is going to bend to Apple and eliminate Flash from their mobile Web sites. Flash is a goner.

"Apple iPhone launches new Internet age"

Ya think so!

These "analysts" just need to come to MDN and read our posts. It seems like we post this stuff weeks before they do. They should be paying us a consulting fee for this stuff.

They just don't get it.

Jul 31, 08 - 10:05 am Comment from: Ray

Well if your blog really needs hits...sucking a a little fanboi cock goes a long way.

What happened? Did they close all the journalism schools after Watergate?

Just my $0.02

Jul 31, 08 - 10:15 am Comment from: Crabapple

Having red the full article, I do not agree with the latter part. If I do not wish my whereabouts to be known, then I should have that choice.

If my mobile whatever is constantly relaying information to me & then back to others, can I have an option to switch it off please? I would hate to be found in the arms of my loved one wearing only my birthday suit by my other loved one!!!!! for example, & I imagine that would apply to my loved one too...all of them!!!!!!! Ha! ha! haaaaaa!!!

Anyway, you get the idea? There are times when we all need some time to ourselves.

Jul 31, 08 - 10:34 am Comment from: Spark

By their nature cell phones constantly report location. That is how the network knows through which cell tower to route your calls. Putting your iPhone in in airplane mode should give you privacy.

Jul 31, 08 - 10:39 am Comment from: Blue Dream

Somebody listens to Cramer...he's one of the 8 on Direct TV's News Mix channel and RIMM's stock is up today. Gas bag, exactly, but he shouldn't have a TV show unless he can do simple homework. Anyone can see the market share growth Apple has made in one year, while RIMM's sits still. The Bold is not out yet, and I seriously doubt it can match spec for spec of the iPhone. Cramer is wishing out loud or setting RIMM up to bomb...there is no way
RIMM shareholders can accept less than the new iPhone in mass features, convenience, and a REAL browser. Does anyone hear anything that the Blackberry does NOT have 3g yet? Not a chance! Also, Cramer doesn't realize that over half the countries committed to the iPhone haven't even been released yet...there is statistically NO chance yet to get any accurate numbers on iPhone sales until January or so. Buy AAPL, not RIMM. Cramer is a dork!

Jul 31, 08 - 10:39 am Comment from: 7over

@Crabapple,
If you don't want to be discovered doing something that would cause you and others pain and suffering.... just don't do it.

Of course, unless it's the kind that gets strapped on your ankle, you can always turn off your tracking device.

Kramer of Seinfeld?

Jul 31, 08 - 10:43 am Comment from: Woody

megaME said, "But listening to them talk about how cool the touch interface is and good enough and close enough to an iPhone is driving me crazy."

You might also ask them if they think a guy in a dress and high heels is good enough and close enough to being a woman.

Jul 31, 08 - 10:55 am Comment from: Evil Twin

This is what day 21? since the iPhone 3G release? I drove by the Apple store near my house (Knox Street Store) and there was still a long line of people waiting to get an iPhone.

Come on. That has got to be an unprecedented phenomenon - one that should surly cause Apple stock to skyrocket. Do you hear it on the news? Nope. Who will be waiting in line 1 week after the latest RIM is released? No one.

Who is afraid of Apple?

Jul 31, 08 - 10:59 am Comment from: AAPLguy

@ Jamie

If you are having those kind of problems it's not due to the 2.0 software. It's a problem with the hardware or the software on the computer you are syncing/restoring it with. My phone has been flawless since the 2.0 release with the exception of a few crappy free apps I downloaded. You need to call tech support or take it back where you got it and get it replaced.

I don't mind Flash when it shows the Old Spice girl. Sigh.

"Apple iPhone launches new Internet age"?

Looks like more laughably incorrect pro-Apple nonsense that's so fashionable in the blogosphere these days.

First of all, Crapple hasn't ushered in anything unless you can count proprietary, toy computers for smug losers or dopey MP3 players for music pirates. I wish these idiots would stop trying to re-write history. Truth is we should all be thankful for the revolutionary and remarkable innovations from Microsoft. Anybody who uses a real computer knows that.

Your potential. Our passion.™

Flash pegs my G4 processor at 100% CPU in my 12" AluPB. Imagine what it would do to my iPhone?!?

And, there aren't more than a few cellphones in the world that say they can play full Flash. I went thru half of the list at Adobe's website about a month ago, and 99.9% of the cellphones listed could only play Flash Lite. I consciously avoid Flash websites, as they just bog down my AluPB.

Jul 31, 08 - 11:41 am Comment from: theloniousMac

@Zune Tang, well I must BEGRUDGINGLY admit that when you're right you're right.

"Looks like more laughably incorrect pro-Apple nonsense that's so fashionable in the blogosphere these days. "

A more true statement has not been uttered in these forums.

The iPhone is a wonderful device fan boys, so stfu before you go off the deep end here.

While the iPhone is a wonderful device here's hoping that locked up, purposefully limited, proprietary, devices built on top of collusion between companies like AT&T;and Apple is NOT the future of the Internet.

Here's hoping that we aren't so ridiculously thirsty for a decent mobile device that any little thing that comes along that's marginally different isn't treated literally like the 2nd coming of Jesus by everyone, especially the media.

All that's needed now is for Barrack Obama to endorse the iPhone and the and we will finally know what critical mass is for complete and utter silliness.

Do I like my iPhone? Hell yeah. I particularly enjoy having twitter and turn by turn GPS directions on the phone, as well as other location based services, but does this mean a new age ?

I'll believe it's a new age when people don't have to hack the iPhone to make it an actual personal device. I'll believe it's a new age when obviously useful applications like SKYPE are permitted on the iPhone. I'll believe it's a new age when more than one type of video is permitted on the iPhone.

We have to stop falling all over ourselves and acting like the iPhone is perfect. It is not. We should give credit where credit is due, but the device and the services structure concocted by Apple and AT&T;have too many negative issues that need to be pointed out.

Someone needs to point out that the Emperor has no clothes without getting caught up in how good he looks.

@R2

You have way too high regard for flash. It is a processor hog and a bandwidth hog. Not to mention most sites that use it are completely anoying or not implemented correctly. And you can do tons without flash, ever heard of php, javascript, webapps, etc? I avoid flash sites like the plague.
