Apple iPhone may not be causing Duke’s Wi-Fi issues

"Duke University is taking a softer stance on the cause of its wireless networking problems on Friday. Earlier in the week Duke administrators put the blame squarely on Apple’s iPhone, but a report due today from the university may exonerate the iPhone," Jim Dalrymple reports for Macworld.

"'We are presently looking into it and we have not been able to conclusively pinpoint where the problem is,' said Julian Lombardi, assistant vice president of academic services technology support for Duke University," Dalrymple reports. "'We hope to have a resolution in the next few hours.'"

Dalrymple reports, "That is a much different position than Kevin Miller, assistant director, communications infrastructure, with Duke’s Office of Information Technology, took earlier this week. Miller laid the blame for Duke’s networking problems squarely on the iPhone."

MacDailyNews Note: Network World on Monday quoted Kevin Miller as saying, "I don’t believe it’s a Cisco problem in any way, shape, or form."

It is odd that they would publicly declare that the iPhone is the problem without more information, but I understand where they're coming from. Suddenly, out of nowhere, they're having very odd wireless network behavior. Right around that same time, the iPhone gets released. One goes with the information one has, and it's certainly doesn't make them stupid for thinking the iPhone might be the source of the problem. What makes them stupid is releasing the information to the public without more information.

Of course the iPhone is causing Duke's Wi-Fi issues. Expect to see a lot more of this type of thing in the future if you MAC lemmings keep buying Apple's typically shoddy phones. You can chalk it up to first generation problems from a first generation product from a second-rate manufacturer. You all should have seen it coming. I did.

I'll tell you this, Microsoft would never release a product with so many problems. Apple's rush to put these crappy phones on the street will be their downfall with the multitudes of disgruntled customers coming out of the woodwork. The return rates are for these things. There's a reason Vista took 5 years. It's a little something called attention to detail and a commitment to quality. You Apple cultists might want to look into it.

Stick to your guns, Kevin Miller. Don't let the Apple FUD machine take you down. You can count on support from me and the IT guys where I work. Stupid Apple.

I am a programmer and fixed more issues with network and Cisco crap than the entire "CCNA" IT team.

Yes, why would they talk to anyone publicly, until they had a clear bead on the problem. Makes them look very amateurish at best, (an IT staff who is in over their heads) and devious at worst. (They have an axe to grind with Apple.) I mean, every time they have a network issue, are they calling up the local newspaper to discuss the potential problems and solutions?

Slow news day for North Carolina.

I think next time our business servers go down, I'll call up the local news and have a press conference. "Yea, our crappy Dell servers went down again, hard drives keep failing and keep getting infected with internet viruses."

(Except that would be telling the truth and is quite boring, besides the windows people in the office who lost all their data.)

Well, what you get with Cisco is mostly that you are in the same boat as everyone else. So when you have a problem with some esoteric feature like IP multicast, it's more likely that the issue has already been experienced and understood by someone else. Using uncommon and complex features on less common equipment means that you can be a little alone if you find yourself with some kind of subtle problem.

Of course, as you see in this particular case, this safety in numbers doesn't always help.

Back on topic, it's not shock that it's a Cisco/IT dipsh*t problem. That's generally the cause when technical problems arise at a business or university.

Mr. Miller may have had no basis for his blaming Apple and the iPhone, but I'm sure he had plenty of bias! All these IT types are threatened by Apple and the fewer resources it takes to maintain Macs. They're all just scared little girls, terrified they won't be invited to the prom.
