Apple iPhone powers AT&T to record mobile customer gains
Thursday, January 24, 2008 - 09:39 AM EST

"AT&T Inc. on Thursday said fourth-quarter earnings jumped almost 62%, boosted by acquisitions and the addition of an industry record 2.7 million net mobile customers," Jeffry Bartash reports for MarketWatch.

"The nation's largest wireline and wireless phone carrier also reaffirmed its expectation of continued strong growth in 2008, indicating that a slower U.S. economy has not undermined growth," Bartash reports.

"In the final three months of 2007, meanwhile, AT&T said net profit rose 61.8% to $3.14 billion, or 51 cents a share," Bartash reports. "Revenue rose 91% to $30.35 billion from $15.9 billion a year earlier, mostly due to wireless growth and the inclusion of BellSouth sales. BellSouth was acquired in December 2006."

"Wireless revenue rose 16.3% to $11.4 billion. AT&T, the exclusive provider of the Apple iPhone, ended the fourth quarter with a nation-leading 70.1 million mobile customers," Bartash reports.

"AT&T achieved its record increase in net wireless customers in large part due to its exclusive right to distribute the popular iPhone by Apple Inc. About 2.3 million people bought an iPhone in the final three months of the year, Apple said Tuesday," Bartash reports. "The carrier's gain likely came largely at the expense of Sprint Nextel Corp. , which has been losing customers owing to poorer customer service and a less exciting roster of wireless phones. The iPhone has also helped AT&T maintain its lead over Verizon Wireless, the nation's No. 2 mobile carrier."

I trust European and Asian carriers are noticing this. Get off dime and cut a deal with Stevie baby.

I was hoping for a non-glossy screen iPhone/MacBook Air combination, with the ability to run apps off the internet and store files on a website.

I was also hoping for a unlimited data plan for under $30 a month.

I'll keep hoping... wink

I guess there's a sprint to the finish on the verizon.

"I was hoping for a non-glossy . . ."

We had no idea you felt that way. Please explain it again.

Jan 24, 08 - 10:09 am Comment from: MaLvado

Yes, tell us about your non-glossy hopes.

I like my iPhone too, except when it crashes while accepting or completing a phone call.

I doubt if Ted Rogers reads this, but, What the Heck: "Ted, is there anyone home there??? Pay attention you self-important weasel! You are missing the opportunity of a lifetime. You cannot afford to burn 100's of millions of $!!!"

@Gone Nuts...

a vCard can become corrupted and crash your iPhone... the solution is to discard the old contact, and create a new one... Voila... the crashing vanishes...

Jan 24, 08 - 10:32 am Comment from: mwwalk

aww...the good old vCard. Had to get rid of that a long time ago. smile

That's funny...i'm not sure i know what you're talking about. I've never had this problem with my imaginary iPhone.

LiM: Nice! And next tell me that AT&T will look back to see sam sung blues. It will be a singular sensation.

Jan 24, 08 - 11:38 am Comment from: Zune Tang®

AT&T;still doesn't have anything like V-CAST. I love V-CAST. V-CAST and Windows Mobile are all I need.

Your potential. Our passion.™

@OldManMac...

Doesn't the iPhone unlimited data plan cost $20? No need to keep hoping.

Jan 24, 08 - 01:13 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

My iPhone, with an additional number on a separate phone is only $114/month.

Jan 24, 08 - 02:07 pm Comment from: KenC

As has been pointed out, the iPhone's data plan is $20, which I believe is still less than $30. And, there's no reason why you can't put a matte film over anything glossy, but you can't make a matte screen glossy.

Also, as I've pointed out before, the issue with eye problems related to glossy screens was for CRTs, not LEDs or LCDs. I've yet to see a study where LCDs or LEDs glossy screens caused eye problems.

Sometimes when I read these glossy screen issues, I wonder if people with bifocals had these eye probs too. I mean, they've got two points of focus in their vision!

Ampar,

You can say there's a sprint to the finish att the verizon.

Jan 24, 08 - 03:25 pm Comment from: Ampar

The Other Steve,

Nice! And if I owned stock in those other mobile carriers, I'd say it's time to cell. Good call?
