Apple iPhone soon to interface with Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-ray movie playback
Wednesday, April 09, 2008 - 10:01 AM EST

"Blu-ray Disc solutions provider Netblender will announce later this week a new SDK for iPhone developers which will expand the features of movie playback on the PS3. One immediate benefit is that the iPhone will be able to act as a wireless remote for the PlayStation 3, perhaps robbing away several sales of Sony’s multimedia remote," Marcus Yam reports for DailyTech.

"While movie studios may not program special Blu-ray Disc movie features specifically for PlayStation 3 users, the possibility exists for special iPhone interoperability, such as the display of Internet Movie Database information," Yam reports.

"Other functions could be for the iPhone to record and track your movie collection and playback habits. Another feature, first revealed by Sony for the PSP, is the potential for portable copies for playback on the iPhone or iPod Touch," Yam reports.

Man, if I get iPhone/iPod touch versions of a BR movie I buy for free I'll actually have to start buying them! Right now I have 1 BR movie and not much interest in buying more until the prices drop, this might actually add enough value for them to be worth it at the current price.

Oh yah, and I got a PS3 all right, my Mac is for serious work, my PS3 & PSP is for play, and my iPhone rules. smile

The Sony interface is horrible so I'd welcome some Applization of that experience.

@Macromancer

I second that. The onscreen menu is OK but god forbid you go to the online store. Just try to read anything. I'm viewing it on a 40" HD TV and we have to get up and walk over to the TV to just read text and menu items. Try to change the settings. Good luck.

Has anyone tried medialink as a software solution to mimic (partially) AppleTV using the PS3? Works great to stram material from my iMac with iTunes and iPhoto but is a little funky with movies.
Will be interesting to see how well the iPhone communicates.

@Buster

I have just started using EyeConnect from Elgato with my PS3 and so far it works awesome, plus it plays dvi and other formats. It basically turns your Mac into a DLNA media server. You can access your iTunes and iPhoto content as well, but I haven't tried that yet with the PS3. I am impressed with the PS3 as a media machine, plus you get a Blu-ray player. It also plays games. lol

@Mo...I fully agree, the PS3 is indeed a marvel as it easily sees and interacts with all 3 macs in my house. I mainly bought it as a blu-ray player when I knew HD was going buns up but having it as a game machine for my son was a factor as well.

Apparently you can buy love....lol

Or on your display it could just be 'play', 'stop', etc.
