Apple iPod saves girl’s life
Friday, June 19, 2009 - 09:26 AM EST

"An Essex teenager who was hit by lightning in a storm says that her life was saved by her iPod – and the fact that she was holding her boyfriend's hand at the time," Philippe Naughton reports for The Times Online.

"Sophie Frost and Mason Billington, both 14, took shelter under a tree in King George V Playing Field, in Rayleigh during a thunderstorm on Monday night when they were hit by the 3,000-volt lightning bolt," Naughton reports.

"Sophie passed out as the current travelled through her iPod headphones, which were hanging from her school uniform, and burned her chest and stomach," Naughton reports. "Although his eyesight was affected by the bolt, Mason put Sophie over his shoulder and carried her to nearby Websters Way to get help."

"'Everybody's said the iPod must have diverted the lightning away from my body, which probably saved my life,' said Sophie, who has been dubbed 'Sparky' by her friends and family," Naughton reports. "Sophie’s mother, Julie, told The Sun: 'I just thank God my daughter is still alive. The doctors say her iPod saved her. Her nan only bought it a few days ago... Mind you, the only thing Sophie seemed worried about was that her new iPod was frazzled."

Is there no limits to the iPods capabilities???

Thank God for his small tender mercies!!!!

Jun 19, 09 - 08:36 am Comment from: El Guapo

I like how the iPod gets top billing in the headline (boyfriend must be jealous).

Jun 19, 09 - 08:37 am Comment from: Crabapple

for her small tender mercies???

Jun 19, 09 - 08:42 am Comment from: Rike

I hope Letterman doesn't use "small tender mercies" in a punchline.

Jun 19, 09 - 08:45 am Comment from: Popeadope

I believe that is now 2 lives saved by iPods ( the other a soldier in Eyeraq). One more miracle and the iPod can be nominated for sainthood!

Jun 19, 09 - 08:47 am Comment from: Mark

Wasn't there a lawsuit a couple of months ago, claiming that the iPod was a lightning rod? Better to read stories like this.

Jun 19, 09 - 08:49 am Comment from: HMCIV

Lightning strikes? There's an app for that. On a tragic note, a guy fell off a bridge and drowned when he became tangled in his Zune headphones. The mass pulled him under and the sound quality made him succumb to despair.

Jun 19, 09 - 08:55 am Comment from: HolyMackerel

And the iPod now only plays electro-funk music…

Jun 19, 09 - 09:02 am Comment from: Crunch n' Munch Cheesy Baked Scones ™

She was definitely using the LightningShield app on her iPod Touch.

Jun 19, 09 - 09:02 am Comment from: thethirdshoe

for it's small tender mercies???

Jun 19, 09 - 09:04 am Comment from: mwmwmw

So, when was it ever a good idea to stand under a tree in a thunder and lightening storm?

Parenting fail. This is not news.

Jun 19, 09 - 09:09 am Comment from: iCesar

f*ck the iPod, she's named Sparky now!!! WHAT A LOL!!!!!

Jun 19, 09 - 09:16 am Comment from: homer

ah, but were she not carrying around a metal trinket like an iPod would she have even been struck at all? Physicists discuss...

Jun 19, 09 - 09:20 am Comment from: Zune Tang®

Now I've heard everything. You MAC astroturfers will come up with anything to prop up your tired, derivative, Zune wannabe I-Pods.

What's next? I-Pod settles election dispute in Iran? I-Pod gets IT guy girlfriend? I-Pod now comes in brown, doesn't cost too much and plays WMA files which can be downloaded from Zune Marketplace if you have enough points?

Your potential. Our passion.™

In more recent news, iPod touches have displayed weather forecasts that let people avoid lightning.

Oh, and by the way, because the human body is on its own susceptible to lightning as most of the human body conducts electricity, I believe that the iPod did not cause the strike. It was more likely the Windows Live Tree that shoddily put itself in the wrong place.

Jun 19, 09 - 09:35 am Comment from: McIntosh

Ah, Zune Tang. Like sunshine on a rainy day. When are you going to get your own show or something?

Jun 19, 09 - 10:11 am Comment from: Peruchito

if she had those headphones in her ears, it would have been a very different story

Jun 19, 09 - 11:25 am Comment from: MJ

I like how they know it was '3000 volts'.

MJ

Jun 19, 09 - 11:29 am Comment from: Olmecmystic

@Peruchito:

I heard about that happening to some boy in Colorado, I think. Fscked him up pretty good, too.

I think the blessed young lady and Apple fan should expect a personal call from Steve Jobs soon to go to Regent Street and pick up her replacement iPod, on the company.

Kudos to the chivalrous young lad as well. Stay the hell away from a TREE next time, you two!

Peace.
Olmecmystic cool smile

P.S. Apparently Poon Tang is jealous cuz M$ is getting no pub this week, what with all the Apple goings on. How now for the wow? cool smile

Jun 19, 09 - 11:37 am Comment from: Spark

Contrary to rumors, I was NOT hit by lightening.

Jun 19, 09 - 11:44 am Comment from: Gordon Horne

Yep, there was an earlier case in which an iPod was blamed for attracting lightning. Dumbstruck: Lawn-mowing teen struck by lightning, blames Apple iPod

So that's one endangerment and one protection for an even slate for Apple. "Apple: We don't kill you or save you, but for pity's sake don't stand under trees in thunder storms."

Jun 19, 09 - 11:45 am Comment from: TheConfuzed1

Whenever Zune Tang posts an article, if he sees his shadow, it means there will be six more weeks of Microsoft oppression.

Jun 19, 09 - 11:56 am Comment from: Huh?

Her nan? WTFIT?

Jun 19, 09 - 12:00 pm Comment from: Zipptiy Do Dah

I wonder why God didn't want her to have that iPod?

I mean, if he didn't want her harmed he wouldn't have had her hit by the lighting, right?

Perhaps she needed to be taught a lesson. One that required her to almost get killed to learn.

Or maybe she should have bought a Zune. That God certainly does have a sense of humor!

Jun 19, 09 - 12:06 pm Comment from: Greg L

Seeking shelter under a tree during a lightning storm? Couldn’t she find a lighting rod to climb atop?

Jun 19, 09 - 03:18 pm Comment from: GRANDxADMIRAL

No limits = god-like powers = iPod = Apple = God

Bow down nation, lest ye be smited.

Aw, Sparky's a cute name for a girl!

@GRANDxADMIRAL

"smighted" = smote

Besides, scraping the bottom of the news barrel, aren't we?

Jun 19, 09 - 10:37 pm Comment from: KingMel

If lightning is going to strike in your area, then it will strike whether or not you are carrying an iPod. Sitting under a tree (or even holding onto a metal lawnmower) is more likely to make you a target of lightning that wearing an iPod.

If lightning does strike you, however, then it seems reasonable that the earbud wires and the metal case of the iPod could channel some of that energy, heat up and cause burns (which might very well be the least of your troubles at that point). Of course, so could a cell phone, car keys in your pocket, jewelry, or a belt buckle.

I recommend avoiding being struck by lightning.

Jun 20, 09 - 07:34 am Comment from: Wingsy

A 3,000 volt piece of lightning isn't going very far. That would barely jump a gap of a few millimeters.

Now if they said 50,000,000 volts, that would be more like it. Anyway, who was there to measure it?

Jun 20, 09 - 09:34 pm Comment from: Rainy Day

You’re almost right about that Wingsy. Back in high school i built a Tesla coil with an output of 900,000 volts, and it could only produce a spark gap of about 3-4 inches (10 cm). Lightning is easily in the billions of volts range (or for the Brits: thousands of millions), or more.

Jun 21, 09 - 11:06 pm Comment from: jake

wow. there really is an app for everything

Jun 22, 09 - 03:02 am Comment from: twilightmoon

I was thinking exactly the same thing! lol
