“Carrie Underwood’s performance of The Pretenders ‘I’ll Stand By You’ debuted at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on Thursday. The song was performed at last week’s American Idol ‘Idol Gives Back’ television show,” Jim Dalrymple reports for Macworld.
“This is the first time that an iTunes Exclusive single — not available on CD or from any other provider — has debuted in the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100. According to Apple, more than 100,000 audio downloads of ‘I’ll Stand By You’ were purchased in less than a week,” Dalrymple reports.

OK, I’ll admit it, I bought one.
I didn’t buy one. I heard on the show and it sounded nice. But not my thing.
I don’t buy much from iTunes, but I am happy to hear that iTunes is getting more powerful.
I did, too…but I’m not proud of it.
She does have a great voice, though.
The pride of Checotah, OK.
And, ironically, they have a billboard of her on I40.
A real cutey-patooty.
From live performance to 100,000 units sold in a week, talk about phenomenal!!! That is the way to do business!!
Apple right now is a small % of total sales compared to CDs, but the # of iPods in the wild is still growing at a rapid pace, and has already roared past 100 million sold. As more and more iPods get sold and more copies of iTunes are in use, the speed at which Apple’s iTunes sales will grow will continue to accelerate.
The DRM free thing is I think part of this strategy because it removes some of the last remaining barriers to people replacing their CD purchases with iTS purchases, adding lyrics to songs will help too.
Apple is already the 800 lb gorilla in online music sales, but it’s very possible if they can maintain their growth that they could become the 800 lb gorilla of all music sales, eclipsing Walmart.
Think about it, what does Walmart seriously bring to the music table? Shelf space? Heck they censor their music, and only offer the most popular music, not a broad selection, they add no value whatsoever to the table. Why do they deserve to be the top dog in music sales?
They don’t.

they bring inexpensive music for most of the people in a broad audience, they need to sell volume, the speciality music, is left to specialty stores, that have a better margin, and with that margin better knowldage epmplyees, I buy jazz and classical music, most of the good CD are not available at walmart, but some other music i Buy i find here
Its easy to be top dog in a mass market, but top doesn not mean best, not most profits.
Don’t you know this just scares the hell out of the big labels.
Me too.
(And that video is not supposed to be hot. I’m so confused.)
I’d still like to see Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood in a no-holds barred Jell-O wrestling match.
Paradigm. Shifted.
The WOW starts now.
Why do they deserve to be the top dog in music sales?
Because Walmart puts music under the same roof as diapers and dog food.
Gotta love the lowest common denominator….
