Now that's pretty cool! Worth keeping an eye on for any movies that I might have missed and wanted to watch. My guess is Apple is eating the other 2/3rds cost.

Peace.

That's the way to spend the advertising budget, give the benefits to the customers not the wastelings in advertising industry. Oops lots of them use Macs, well they know what I mean don't you.

Peace? Really?

Feb 25, 08 - 03:17 pm Comment from: Grigori

Great idea, particularly considering I've been wanting to watch "The Hours" again and have it in my Netflix queue... well, not anymore.

Feb 25, 08 - 03:20 pm Comment from: ralph from berlin

they could make it a movie of the day and after one year they would be running out of movies from there 360+ movie rental collection.

sorry for the sarcasm ...

magic word: wanted as in "movies wanted"

Feb 25, 08 - 03:22 pm Comment from: mo from Philly

So how do we find out which is the next $0.99 rental?

Feb 25, 08 - 03:27 pm Comment from: R2

Great idea and I'll hopefully be able to take advantage of the next offer.

The Hours, Lol.

You go to iTMS next week. That's the hook, and it's brilliant from Apple. Older movies which people may not think to download and watch, but for a buck, why not? Plus, it gets people coming to iTMS each week to see the movie of the week, so you then see all of the OTHER new movies being released.

Feb 25, 08 - 03:32 pm Comment from: karrde97

Probably the studios way of pushing crap movies nobody watched in the first place. We'll probably never see popular movies on list.

Also, I wish people would quit griping about the amount of movies available. Get over it. The selection will increase as usage increases. The music selection started the same way. A studio is not going to commit their entire library right from the start. If the system fails, they've wasted millions on startup. (Not that iTunes movies will fail. We all know that's not going to happen)

Feb 25, 08 - 03:32 pm Comment from: BT

That's the problem. There is no listing that I could see about the $.99 on the Itunes store - you just have to know about it. I hope this changes and they prominently feature the movie of the week.

Feb 25, 08 - 03:33 pm Comment from: ralph from berlin

sorry, but i'm in the mood:
not only didn't they add no new movies to the store for the last 3 days, they even pulled movies that were already on, like saw IV. it is gone now (not that i wanted to watch it).
4 more days to add 640 movies to get to the 1000 movies by the end of february you promised us mr. j.

magic word. saw as in "..."

Feb 25, 08 - 03:36 pm Comment from: en

Hmmmm,
I installed AppleTV and the movies pop up on the screen in alphabitical order. But where do I go to get a full listing directly on iTunes? Is it just on the center screen? But those seem limited and the weekly pick??

Just checking.

This isn't the first one they've done. I just watched Breakfast at Tiffany's that's been on my hard drive a couple weeks now. It was the first weekend special I noticed.

Feb 25, 08 - 03:40 pm Comment from: Ampar

Ah yes, a two hour movie about suicide, disease, endless crying, nervous breakdowns and three women battling depression.
Who's making the popcorn?

Feb 25, 08 - 03:45 pm Comment from: macromancer

"Ah yes, a two hour movie about suicide, disease, endless crying, nervous breakdowns and three women battling depression."

Could instead be a movie about whining crying and ranting bypeople who don't get all the good tech goodies on time that were 'promised by Steve Jobs. Almost as annoying.

Feb 25, 08 - 03:49 pm Comment from: ralph from berlin

imagine someone ordered the apple tv the day steve jobs anounced the all new fanatastico movie rental feature and the big selection there will be (1000 alone at the end of february and that is only the beginning!). imagine someone who just spent 329 dollars and now finds out there is no fantastico movie rental selection. you just bought a box for watching podcasts and your holiday pictures on your tv and you spent more than 300 dollars for it. i am so glad that's not me.

Feb 25, 08 - 03:49 pm Comment from: Rip Van Winkle

that iTunes store got any "Banachek"? i likes "Banachek".

@ Ampar: LOL -

That seriously did make me chuckle... smile

Feb 25, 08 - 03:55 pm Comment from: R2

ralph from berlin, I concur.

It's all about first impressions and had I purchased an Apple TV expecting the promised library by the end of February, I'd be disappointed right now.

When's the porno of the week promo for '69' cents coming out?

I see the movie in iTunes but how do I find it on my AppleTV? I can't seem to locate it there so do I download it to my Mac and then view it on AppleTV? I am confused--but I like the plan for movie of the week.

Feb 25, 08 - 04:24 pm Comment from: express

Oh joy, "The Hours"....

Next week what..?? "Inconvenient Truth"..??

Feb 25, 08 - 04:27 pm Comment from: shux

Cool Deal! The Hours doesn't seem like the kind of movie I would spend 99cents on but I hope MDN will put out weekly reminders to let us know what comes up next.

"imagine someone ordered the apple tv the day steve jobs anounced the all new fanatastico movie rental feature and the big selection there will be (1000 alone at the end of february and that is only the beginning!)."

They probably don't feel as bad as someone who spent $400+ on a BluRay DVD player and are still waiting for the movie selection... But definitely not as bad as someone who bought an HD-DVD player and just lost everything...

The movies will come... This is a typical ramp up and as anyone who's been around awhile knows (or could figure out) the more popular a device is, the more content that will be available for it....

This is nice. A deal like this every week makes for good product buzz. Speaking of products, I wonder how the Zune is doing in sales. I keep asking the questions, but no on has the answers. Not even GOOGLE can find how many Zunes were sold this quarter. Heck if you think about it, what is the point of the Zune anyway, except to screw Played For Sure partners and Zune Tongued followers?

Feb 25, 08 - 05:31 pm Comment from: Ampar

"Oh joy, 'The Hours'.... Next week what..?? 'Inconvenient Truth'..??"

I think you're confusing hot flashes with global warming.

Feb 25, 08 - 05:41 pm Comment from: Marian

It is in the "Watch Now" list at Netflix. So, for Netflix subscribers, "The Hours" can be watched for free.

Feb 25, 08 - 05:49 pm Comment from: KenC

How do you find it? iTunes sends me emails every week with the Tuesday music freebie. I also get emails on new podcasts, new movies, etc.

I downloaded it, about 45mins on a 5Mb dsl line, 1.2Gigs. It looked great, transferred easily to my iPhone, and allowed me to play it past the 24hr time limit, as long as I started it before it expired.

As far as Nicole Kidman getting an Oscar, I have to say, other than getting a prosthesis for her nose, what did she do besides look ugly, angry, out-of-her-mind, and smoke the whole time?

Feb 25, 08 - 06:00 pm Comment from: Jubei

Is that the new version? The Hours Full Throttle? I always like those action big budget films than the tv shows... oh wait, I was thinking Charlies Angels. Sorry. wink

Oh, a Fox Noize watcher. Don't worry, they have Die Hard "Can't Get it Hard Anymore" starring Bruce Willis with a forward by Ted Nugent. You'll enjoy that one.......

Feb 25, 08 - 06:51 pm Comment from: ralph from berlin

dave, more than 1 year ago we thought the same about the selection for buying movies. didn't happen. now they still have the same 1000 + movies as there were 10 months ago. as for rentals: no new movies in 4 days! still 358 as one week ago. and they are ramping up? something is seriously wrong here and we don't want to admit it.

Feb 25, 08 - 07:35 pm Comment from: justme2

All you folks whining about no new movies -- don't complain to Apple, it's the movie studios who hold the reins; they're going to squeeze out as much $$$ as possible on actual DVDs with fancy packaging before they let them go online.

Plus, Steve said in the Keynote that movies wouldn't be available for rental until 30 days after they go on sale. You want to watch a hot movie now, then get thee down to Blockbuster or one of the other video stores.

Rentals are perfect when you're on the road and bored and there's nothing on the tube, or if you're facing a long plane ride and don't want to haul along a bunch of DVDs.
