Apple launches AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone

Apple has launched AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone for US$69:

Every iPhone comes with one year of hardware repair coverage and up to two years of technical support. The AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone extends your repair coverage to two years from the original purchase date of your iPhone. Whether you use iPhone with a Mac or a PC, just one phone call can help resolve most issues.

Could Conn. be about the snobby liberal crowd that needs no warranty, because they will have already upgraded to a new iPhone within 6 months anyway - extended warranty need not apply?

Our attorney suggests the issue is likely a temporary situation due to the process of getting the AppleCare "warrantee" approved by the Insurance Commissioner of the respective states.

Lack of coverage in individual states is indeed an issue of states laws. Florida used to be one of those states where you could not get Applecare. Fortunately that has changed and I just bought some for my iPhone!

There is no AT&T;wireless service in Wyoming which is probably the issue with the provision. We are stuck with Verizon and the other crummy services in this state.

It doesn't matter any hoot. Apple isn't really selling any real number of these phone thingy's. Just look at the facts. In 30 hours (at most) ATT only activated 146,000 devices. Hell, any number of company's sell this amount of product over a 24 hour ( actual time store's being open ) period. I mean you all act like the 350,000 phones Apple sold total in that initial 30 hour period actually warrant one of these Apple Care whatchamacallit's. Any number of cell phone manufacturer's cell this amount of product at every launch.

Now wake up world and understand this. 1. none of you remembered the online sales, just me. 2. State's decide what kind of protection we as consumers deserve , not us. 3. I sold all my wife and I's shares at $93 and $87 and am kicking my own ass for not having a chunk anywhere to buy it back now.

Below is what Apple's PDF said as of today:

b. Limitations The Plan does not cover:
(ii) Damage to the Covered Equipment caused by accident, abuse, neglect, misuse (including faulty installation, repair or maintenance by anyone other than Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider), unauthorized modification, extreme environment (including extreme temperature or humidity), extreme physical or electrical stress or interference, fluctuation or surges of electrical power, lightning, static electricity, fire, acts of God or other external causes;

…so in other words, it won't cover the most important reason I'd ever want such insurance for: dropping the thing. That's an "accident", which isn't covered.

That's because its NOT insurance. In fact many people even mistakenly refer to Applecare as an extended warranty, which legally it is not. It is a service plan that continues past the one year warranty for the phone provided by Apple.

While we're at it, even it it WAS an extended warranty, such agreements are in place to cover the buyer in the event that the product had faulty parts included during manufacturing, not to cover your stupidity or clumsiness for dropping it or leaving it in your car when its 110 degrees out. If it's not their fault, they shouldn't have to pay for it. Plain and simple.

You want insurance, call an insurance company.

Someone please explain to me why over the last year has stupidity taken over this web site? I can't believe how no one gets exactly how powerful Apple is right now. When you bitch that a company only activated 146,000 products in a 30 hour period, there is a problem. Especially when that company had not given any numbered goal? I swear, people hate a winner so much that they pronounce a product as a loser when they potentially sold out a complete run of product. I love this part of capitalism. It's just funny how you build the best products on earth ( not perfect mind you) and everyone wants you to fail.

I hope those of you that get what Apple is doing prosper, and those of you that want them to fail, I hope you... well you will keep doing what you have always done.... nothing. It's sad, but I suppose you do nothing because it is what you saw your parents do. So congrats on sucking losers.

Does it strike anyone else as odd that the warranty covers the product for a total of two years from the original date of purchase? That means you're only getting ONE additional year of coverage instead of the customary two additional years... and for $69??? And two years of phone support is already included in the original warranty? Doesn't this strike anyone else as an incredible rip off?

@ Horseman all applecare terms are from the date of purchase unless you're re-upping at the end of the first cycle. If you buy an apple lap top the first year is under Apple's one year warranty and you get to extend it by 2 years in the case of a laptop. The warranty I believe just covers the hardware. I believe Apple care covers hardware firm ware and software. On the Iphone you can't find anything outside of applecare. I tried to insure my iphone with safeware they rejected my application on the basis that there are no stock pile of iphone parts nor will any be available for the forseeable future. I argued that I'm trying to insure my phone against a terminal drop like from a moving cab or from the 15th floor of a hotel building like say while I'm taking a picture or in a puddle of water or a fire. Most applecare warranties do not cover customer abuse. Personally I think their excuse was a poor one.

Wow--that NY Sun piece was a real hit job. The reporter scrounged up all the negative and misleading recent stories and repackaged it into a new article, AND didn't provide any of the caveats or any of the good news.
If we get a cluster of these negative stories, cool--I smell a buying opportunity!!
