Apple launches new ‘Get a Mac’ Web ad: ‘Give Up On Vista’ (with video)
Monday, November 19, 2007 - 05:25 PM EST

A clever new Apple dual-banner campaign, "Give Up On Vista," was spotted by MacDailyNews readers today on CNET (<— click and you might see it, too) and perhaps other Websites as well:

Video via YouTube (please forgive the quality at the beginning - YouTube, ya know - it clears up pretty quickly):

Nov 19, 07 - 06:21 pm Comment from: mac user 47

Nov 19, 07 - 06:22 pm Comment from: JadisOne

Hilarious. Very creative.

Nov 19, 07 - 06:23 pm Comment from: Thorin

There has bound to be a better vid of this ad somewhere. Ampar, explain the star, is it you or what? What does the star mean?

Nov 19, 07 - 06:23 pm Comment from: Tommyr

LOL! Beautiful!

Nov 19, 07 - 06:24 pm Comment from: silver surfer

Great Ad! I love Apple.

Nov 19, 07 - 06:24 pm Comment from: Thorin

BTW, why does this site always seem to be hanging over the edge of collapse lately?

Nov 19, 07 - 06:30 pm Comment from: SKY LARK

The deadpan delivery is a cracker.

Nov 19, 07 - 06:33 pm Comment from: Jim - TIV

@Thorin...

the star is just MDN's way of saying that you are a registered user and logged in.

Nov 19, 07 - 06:33 pm Comment from: qka

Thanks for the post!

I block ads, so I would never have seen it!

Nov 19, 07 - 06:39 pm Comment from: silverhawk

Thorin

The star means you have registered your name.

Nov 19, 07 - 06:43 pm Comment from: makemineamac

Talk about innovative advertising. Apples' Marketing team really knows how to get the job done. Wow!

Nov 19, 07 - 06:52 pm Comment from: Predrag

I can't remember when was the last time I laughed in my office! This is just side-splitting hilarious!

And of all places, C-NET!! Microsoft must be sending a protest note just about now!

Obviously, this kind of 'cheap shot' advertising would never see broadcast TV. For the web, though, it is excellent and it sure will rile up a lot of people (especially on C-NET; perhaps ZD-Net as well)

Nov 19, 07 - 07:00 pm Comment from: Dougless

Apple computers are the best pc to run Vista.

However, even PC guy now knows he will need to buy a Mac.

Lets see what december brings for PC guy.

"The star means you have registered your name."

Oh, OK. Hey I can admit being an idiot. I thought all unregistered names were "anonymous". Got it.

Nov 19, 07 - 07:36 pm Comment from: clunker

Perfect! Best part is the ad could pass as a Gates keynote.

At least the banner didn't BSOD. smile

Nov 19, 07 - 07:42 pm Comment from: Spark

That's worth shutting off your ad blockers!

Nov 19, 07 - 07:42 pm Comment from: Anonymous©

simply...... brilliant!

Nov 19, 07 - 08:01 pm Comment from: blucaso

Not only funny (one of their best yet) but also one of the first ads to really make real use of the banner and sidebar format. I also like the fact that it doesn't play with the volume on unless you tell it to. Maybe ads would be blocked less often if more of them played friendly like this.

Kudos to the agency on this one. (By the way, when you think of attention to detail that Apple is known for, you start to notice it even in their ads - like the way the angle of them looking up at the banner is correct, and when the sign lights up, you can see the light reflected on their faces as they're gazing at the sign... it's the little things smile )

Nov 19, 07 - 08:16 pm Comment from: MrScrith

Took some digging to finally find it on CNET, then I thought to search for Vista, and yep, right on the main Windows Vista Page guess what showed up. smile

Very cool indeed ... the only trouble was on my MacBook, I had to scroll down to see the whole sidebar ad, so the banner ad was off the top of the screen. I thought I was missing something ... because I was.

Nov 19, 07 - 08:34 pm Comment from: Jim

HA-HA-HA-HA-HA Absolutely brilliant!

Nov 19, 07 - 09:40 pm Comment from: Chuck U Farley

That made up for a few very crappy days.

Nov 19, 07 - 10:37 pm Comment from: Truth is Stranger than Fiction

Its Great! Sort of a take off of Bill Gates introducing "Media Center" with Conan O'Brian. Bill keeps pushing the remote and nothing happens. They wait Bill says its ready again pushes more buttons and nothing happens. I think its on You-tube.
You just can't make this stuff up. -

Nov 19, 07 - 11:59 pm Comment from: Patrick

Holy Crap this is one funny ad. I also saw it on news.com

It's bout time Apple did more than just good TV ads. This banner ad fucking rules.

Is this still considered a banner ad? I dunno, feels like it's something else...in any case...it's great.

Nov 20, 07 - 01:29 am Comment from: Reality Check

Funny ad. But probably counter productive from an advertising point of view. Most Windows users perceive Mac users as arrogant zealots and this line of advertising does nothing to change that perception. (Neither does this web site). It's likely to lose as many sales as it gains. Too much hubris is never a good thing.

Nov 20, 07 - 02:50 am Comment from: Macaday

That is a truly new way of advertising on the web.

Apple set the way once again...

Nov 20, 07 - 08:52 am Comment from: jonahan

Bah only getting an adobe ad :(

Nov 20, 07 - 09:38 am Comment from: John Keogh

A little hubris is bad too.

Nov 20, 07 - 12:04 pm Comment from: James

That is really clever-hubris or no. What a great ad.

Nov 20, 07 - 01:30 pm Comment from: John

I think that's the funniest Mac ad yet. Fantastic!

Nov 20, 07 - 05:07 pm Comment from: Phil

Take this grin

Nov 21, 07 - 05:28 am Comment from: cnet128

...when I go to the C|Net page, I'm getting the top ad without the sidebar ad. Kind of spoils the effect... there's just a giant "Don't Give Up On Vista" banner sitting there doing nothing.

When my girlfriend (now wife) moved in with me she was using a Dell laptop which she openly despised. I let her use my MacBook and she loved it so much I gave it to her when I upgraded to a MacBook Pro. My sister was always using my computer (poor student at the time). She eventually bought her own MacBook when she got a job and when her boyfriend moved in with her he fell in love (with the computer) and bought another one. My sister has since rented out the spare room and now her lodger, having played with the two MacBooks has dumped his Dell for one too. That's 5 Apple laptops, my work is done.

All people need to do is try a Mac and that's it job done. Why then is there no Apple Store in Ireland?
