Apple looks into reports of iMac Core Duo video issues

Apple is investigating reports of video problems in the new Intel-based iMac Core Duo. Recent reports claimed that some users had experienced random horizontal lines and other video playback problems when playing video in Front Row, according to Macworld UK.

“Apple is aware of this issue and is looking into it,” the company said in an email. “If a customer has any technical issues, they should contact AppleCare.” The problem is apparently software-based.

  1. In other news, early adopters of the first production flying cars are reporting an unexpected number of problems with low-hanging branches, squirrel attacks from trees, decapitations, and power-line explosions.

AirCarsRKool, the manufacturer of the RiskyAir3000®, said that these are just typical early-adopter issues and the company is aware of the reports and is looking into them.

In a company e-mail to customers, AirCarsRKool said that if anyone has any technical or death issues, they should contact their warranty provider. They reminded users, however, that since they’re classified as early adopters they shouldn’t expect much because that is, after all, what living on the “bleeding” edge is all about.

  2. “Ohh, man — between this and the AT&T news no wonder AAPL is dropping again. Man this has been a tough few weeks for Apple.”

In other news the sky is falling. Right Chicken Little?

  3. This is not a major issue at all, a software update (that is hopefully coming soon) will correct the issue. Besides, it only impacts certain builds of OS X running on BTO 20″ iMacs with 256MB of VRAM. The huge majority of iMacs are not impacted by this issue at all.

  4. Whatever. My revision A 17″ iMac works great and doesn’t have this problem at all. As the earlier poster mentions, this only effects 20″ iMacs with 256MB of VRAM that have a newer build of Tiger. It’s just a corrupted video driver apparently is all.

  5. The video problems on those effected 20″ iMacs can be corrected for the time being by reducing the color pallet to “thousands” of colors until a patch with a graphics driver fix is ready for download. This is definitely not a serious issue at all.

  6. “I think anyone that’s ever had a problem with a Mac is a liar and should be put in jail.”

    yup, that pretty much sums up MDN ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

    Hail Steve!”

I think you mis-spelled the last part. It’s “Heil” not “Hail”

    FLAME ON!!!!

    AAAAAAAAARGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!! OUCH! OUCH! OUCH!

  8. I want to buy APPL but when i close my eyes and try to predict what will happen, i see these two numbers: $64 and $59..

Why do i keep seeing those two numbers?

Will APPL go that low before going back up?

If it is gonna go to $59 why do i see $64?

Can this mean it will go to $64 then bounce to $70 then go back to $59?

OMG i just noticed the “MDN MAGIC WORD” is “numbers”

    mmm this is odd.

  9. Wow! A first-model Apple product has some production problems? Be still my heart! This has NEVER happened before!

Is my biting sour sarcasm coming through, or do I need to kick it up a notch?

Don’t buy first versions of hardware products! No matter WHO makes them!!

  10. i bought it, its great. if it wasn’t great i would have returned it before 14-30 days. Why should i wait months for a second release, human life span is short. its like 60-80 years

  11. I have the 20″ iMac with 256MB of VRAM and haven’t experienced a single graphical issue in the two weeks I’ve had it. I’ve been showing off Frontrow to all my friends, going through my 100+ videos (video podcasts, movies, and trailers), without a hitch. Watched the “Superman Returns” 1080i trailer full-screen while a movie encoded in the background, with no dropped frames or visual errors. I just checked, and I have the 8G1165 build–the “good” build.

  12. The people putting up a website on a rev A unit out less than a month on a new OS (x86 Mac) on a new CPU (Core Duo-Yonah) with a new Graphics Chip-set are a bit over the top, don’t you think?

Sounds a bit like whining to me. I mean screen artifacts on Front Row isn’t going to hamper anybody’s productivity, is it? It will probably make them actually USE the Mac for something more productive until the patch comes out.

I own a 20″ Core Duo and am very pleased, especially after bumping the memory up at 1GB. Most of the bumps I have had relate to the Migration Assistant from my previous rig. The other night I talked to the manager at the local Apple Store and she had had similar problems (not the video issue).

If you are having problems with Wireless Networking, passwords for Mail accounts, etc dump your existing preference files, reboot and set them up again. There are apparently issues with the Migration Assistant app corrupting preferences.

As Apple, ATI & Intel refine their code for the Core Duo Macs things will get ‘mo betta, fasta, etc. The drivers for the graphics, SSE optimization tools, AltiVec support in Rosetta, etc are very early & quite good.

Allow me to explain. You are looking at plans for future domination of the PC world. This is a meeting about which steps are going to be taken.

*Buy a Mac, because life is too short.

MDN MW, “are” as in; We are the future!

  14. Hey MDN,

Why not do your own survey of your most frequent posters and find out what problems we Mac heads have REALLY had over the years?

I for one have had problems with nearly every Mac I owned, ie..

Quadra 700 No problems but died on me after 7 years valiant service.

iMac Strawberry Mother board failed a week after warranty (12Mths) ran out. Still going strong.

2nd Gen iPod died after two years service.

    4th Gen iPod No problems

    5th Gen iPod 60G Perfect…

G5 1.8, some software problems but humming along as good as gold.

G4 1.67 PowerBook, sound card replaced after 10 months under warranty.

We all have problems and should face up to it. Macs are not perfect because they still use most of the same companies that other PC makers use to get their bits and bobs and nothing last forever, except our love of the Mighty Mac.

    Cheers,

    Leo
