Apple Mac, iPhone, iPod touch exempt from Chinese Internet filter
Friday, July 03, 2009 - 09:12 AM EST

"Apple appears to be exempt from China's mandate that a controversial Internet filtering program be shipped with all computers sold in the country," Owen Fletcher reports for IDG News Service.

"Computers that do not meet the software's technical requirements are excluded from the mandate, according to one PC maker," Fletcher reports. "China in recent weeks ordered foreign and domestic PC makers to package Green Dam Youth Escort, a program that blocks pornography and some sensitive political content online, with all computers sold in the country."

Fletcher reports, "Green Dam is not being bundled with machines at the Apple store in Beijing because the software has no Mac version, a sales representative said Friday... Apple will still pre-install the program in accordance with the government mandate if a Mac version comes out, the sales representative said."

"It is unclear if Green Dam will be released for other operating systems," Fletcher reports. "A service representative at a sister company to Green Dam's main developer, Jinhui Computer System Engineering, said the company is testing the software on non-Windows platforms and will release an updated version if compatibility is added for other OSes."

"There's one developer who can take forever to release the Mac version."

The Obama admin will soon issue an edict to rectify this situation.

As soon as it's finished helping Hugo Chavez supplant the will of the 'Free People of Honduras' in executing a coup to reinstate their recently-ousted dictator.

Viva Obama!!! Long Live the 'People's' Revolution!

Jul 03, 09 - 08:40 am Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

@ Nutcracker,

Don't you have a cross burning to attend?

Jul 03, 09 - 08:46 am Comment from: InTheShelter

Amen. STFU Nutcracker. You're a mindless sheep who has fallen for GOP manipulation.

Hopefully the smaller Mac market share will mean that anyone developing Green Dam for the Mac won't be as familiar with the Mac and will leave holes for the Chinese people to wiggle through. How long will those folks have to suffer because a government is paranoid at the thought of free exchange of ideas. It's a good preview of what we were headed towards in the last 8 years. Let's hope that Obama keeps his word about rolling back some of those constitutional violations or we are screwed. As it stands the terrorists already won on 9/11 because Americans are the ones who have been stripped of freedoms.

Jul 03, 09 - 08:46 am Comment from: AllenKids

The Government Blinked:

The POS that is Green Dam's mandatory install date was pushed indefinitely.

The irony is, however:

So far there is only ONE pc maker could't wait till July to load this crap on their machines, they voluntarily did it themselves.

No, you guess wrong, not lenovo.

Our lovely brown nose boy is actually SONY!

Gosh, why was I surprised, after all, SONY was loading their machines with all kinds of crap for ages, not to mention RootKit.

Jul 03, 09 - 08:55 am Comment from: Roy

If by GOP manipulation you mean common sense, then count me in as one of those sheep.

Jul 03, 09 - 09:01 am Comment from: Nutcracker

Sir Bill Gates and IntheShelter have eaten too much government cheese.

Jul 03, 09 - 09:07 am Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

@ Nutcracker & Hayweed,

Point taken. Now shove your heads back up each others ass and enjoy your political viewpoints.

Jul 03, 09 - 09:11 am Comment from: Nutcracker

btw,

Please remember that I'm one of the people that is willing to fight and die for *you* to be able to disagree with me.

So, go ahead and tea-bag socialists all you want, communism *cannot* exist without a willing and complicite middle & upper class to fleece (to finance its 'public' works).

I totally resist totalitariansm, despotism, fascism, socialism, communism, *anything* that subverts the will of free people to live their lives in a way that they, and only they, see fit.

Fsk the 'gov't', fsk 'fairness', fsk 'looking out for others'... if I wanna 'look out for another', then let it be MY GD CHOICE. NOT THE GOV'T DICTATING WHAT I DO.

Jul 03, 09 - 09:15 am Comment from: jarrettdailynews

@ All,

Just when I think some of you get it, you go and pick political sides again. In my house, I decide where I g o for my future, not a political party. I you are penning your dreams on someone else, or someone elses policiey s, you are an idiot. Keep voting, it keeps the cycle going.
Obama is going to do the samething(s) that every president before him did. He will do some good and some not so good. He will make some happy and some not so happy. In 34 years I have yet to take shots at a sitting president and I will continue to not take shots. Doesn't matter the party in charge, because this country still moves forward for 3 reasons.

1. We can print money at any time.
2. We have more gold than anyone on the planet which allows us to print money anytime we want.
3. We have more bombs than anyone else, which just allows us to do whatever we want.

So keep being political morons, religous zealotical freaks and all around followers, because with out that I would have way more competition trying to get more than my fair share.

In closing, thank you all for being sheep, this wolf appreciates it.

Oh Jarrett... thank you.

I feel thoroughly chastised and I am currently sitting in my 'naughty corner'.

Perhaps you would be willing to share your enlightened opinions with the Hondurans and the Chinese? I'm sure they would feel *so* much better.

Hugs & kisses.

Jul 03, 09 - 09:31 am Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

@ Nutcracker,

"Please remember that I'm one of the people that is willing to fight and die for *you* to be able to disagree with me."

Feel free to do so. I'm a little more discriminating when it comes to losing my life, and blindly following the goals of any politician in the name of patriotism isn't a good enough reason for me.

@ jarrettdailynews,

Watch your back. They took some of those wolves off of the endangered list again.

I wonder if this will help Mac sales in China?

Jul 03, 09 - 09:36 am Comment from: @jarret

Agree with you on the political aspect.

But it's asshile thinking like that put us where we are today. Too much selfishness exist in our society today and hardly any selflessness, it only exist if it benefits one which leads back to selfishness.

Obama is trying too hard to be liked too much. Too much meddling but is pulling a slide of hand doing it. Keep everyone too distracted with too much while working on his true agenda. Socializing the US as much as possible. Show me a man's friends and teachers and I'll show you the type of man he is. This guy isn't some political or economical genius, just a really good salesman(BSer). Keep in mind when I say all this yes I am democrat, no I don't like what out leaders are doing. No I don't think we should be doing anymore business with china than we already are. If we dont watch our step it will be china who everyone turns too for help in our lifetime.

Jul 03, 09 - 09:40 am Comment from: jarrettdailynews

@Nutcracker,

Absolutely I would, any of them can do what anyone else can do. Move yourself in life. Either move forward, or physically move. Would that take more action on their part than "Our" part? Absolutely. That is where you have to decide how much "you" want what it is you want. Just because it is harder for someone else doesn't mean it isn't possible, just means they have to want it more an work harder to get. No elephant is going to get it for you and no donkey is going to get it for you either. You have to go get it yourself. That goes for anyone, anywhere.

Plus I am indifferent, bleeding heart doesn't generally describe me. My heart actually pumps. And by the words most of you write I would guess youf heart bleeds more than it pumps. Which is a shame, because my guess is your spouses and children want and deserve more from you.

Now, where is my investment information about that company over seas that has extremely low labor as part of their costs which make for greater margins. I think this one will be a ten bagger when the economy heats back up.

Jul 03, 09 - 09:41 am Comment from: judy

It's kind of dumb to ask free countries to install your government mind control software anyway.

And yes with the recent uptick in job losses last month, it's obvious our present government doesn't know a dam thing about creating jobs.

Jul 03, 09 - 09:45 am Comment from: Nutcracker

"Feel free to do so." ...Sir Gil.

Thank you for your permission.

Please remember me this weekend while you're enjoying your family, hamburgers, bbq ribs and beer. And please remember all those that have already given their lives to protect your freedoms.

You're welcome. Ingrate.

Jul 03, 09 - 09:55 am Comment from: jarrettdailynews

@@jarret, It's Jarrett though,

Let them turn to China, China needs us, we consume all of their crap. If we are number 1 they can be number 2. If we are number 2 they couldn't sustain being number 1.

Quit overthinking everything and get back to work. If you want a future in this life remember a few things.

1. Work doesn't make us rich, it's what we do after work that makes us rich. ( Road to perdition, Paul Newman)
2. Charity starts at home, take care of yours first, that way I don't have to.
3. Concerning yourself with others when they don't concern themsleves is dumb. (my sister works are a "charity bank", sees the exact same people month to month. So they are a huge crutch for these people. They never have to succeed because someone is taking care of it for them.
4. Quit following politics or the news, hell, you don't even need to vote. There are plenty of dream chasers not chasing their dreams that handle the voting process.

I am sure there are some others points of interest I could put down here. It just all comes down to what you want in life. Most of you don't know what you want still. That is why you have hardons for political fractions. You think if you join a cause your life gets better. Same sort of thing that happens to people searching for God. Life gives you exactly what you are willing to work for and towards, nothing more, nothing less.

@Nutcracker,

Funny, My Dad served, 82nd Airbourne. In my life I have never heard him once say "You need to thank me". I have said thank you, and I have heard people thank him. I have never heard him ask for it or expect it. I wonder who the ingrate is.

Hell, I don't know. Was your family on wellfare growing up? Was it our tax dollars that "en-abled" you to choose a millitary life? If so, your welcome, because had you parents actually tried to give you something better you might not have given us the service.

As to anyone who has served though, thank you. Most service men and women are secure enough not to need a thank you and are rather grateful to get it. Some though "you", need for someone to praise you. I wish you parents had given you more confidence, my guess is though that you wish the same.

And to all the service men and women who have had breakfast at my restraurant this year, my wife is still not happy that I wouldn't allow you to pay for your meals. Some of you can put down the chow.

Jul 03, 09 - 10:09 am Comment from: Zune Tang®

Thank you, Nutcracker for having the courage to bring some common sense into the discussion here at MDN. Obviously MAC sheep have a problem with THE TRUTH which can only be pounded out on a Dell or Acer. Which one are you using?

It's nice to have you in my corner and I totally agree with your points about 'looking out for others' and namby-pamby 'fairness'. That crap is for the stupid and the weak. BTW what are you doing this weekend? Maybe you could come over for a barbeque and we can squirt Dick Cheney interview highlights to each other on our Zunes while we patrol the backyard for illegal immigrants who might want to steal hot dogs off the grill.

Let me know if you're free, that is, if Obama hasn't taken all of your freedom away yet. Toodles.

Your potential. Our passion.™

@ Nutcracker,

"Just remember, my nuts are the only ones keeping yours on."

Actually, mine are removable. I keep them in a glass of water at night next to the one with my dentures. Gotta be really careful in the morning when I first wake up.

Just kidding - I don't wear dentures.

Okay, so I hijacked the thread. Now I must go and give my wife a good peter floggin'. I love days off, I hope my work ethic gets me more of them.

I should thank nutcracker again for my time off.

Thank you nutcracker.

@ jarrettdailynews,

I agree, we all owe a debt of gratitude to Nutcracker for instigating this moment of camaraderie and bonding.

Jul 03, 09 - 10:54 am Comment from: Someone Who wants APPLE news not POLITICAL BS

MDN:
Please, please remove idiotic political rantings such as those posted here, and keep the discussion immediately relevant to the article.

PLEASE!

Jul 03, 09 - 11:12 am Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

"... please remove idiotic political rantings ..."

You are soooo right! If it's not about Apple (and only about Apple) it should not be spoken of here. Period.

In fact, MDN should simply have a direct link to here:

feed://www.apple.com/main/rss/hotnews/hotnews.rss

Enough with the personal viewpoints on off-topic subjects. Damn it MDN, we want this site to be exactly like every other Mac-centric site on the web. Quit trying to be unique and entertaining. We want homogenized, cookie cutter information. Please do not think different.

Jul 03, 09 - 11:20 am Comment from: RyanC

@Nutcracker

I'm in agreement with you. It is too bad that there has been journalistic malpractice for the last 8 years. At some point, the sheep will wake up. Hopefully, it will be soon enough to stop the government from totally taking over every segment of our lives. Democrat or Republican makes no difference. It is the power hungry government types that concern me.

How's that hope and change working for you out there? Are you happy now? Is this what you really wanted?

Jul 03, 09 - 11:28 am Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

What's that old saying? Oh yeah:

"Even a blind squirrel finds a Nut every once in a while." hmmm

Jul 03, 09 - 11:46 am Comment from: farmertomato

Until we have a way of filtering posts from defectives such as nutcracker, the comments section of MDN is useless. We've heard all those stupid rants before, sometimes even without the requisite idiot drool, and it's a waste of our time to see them here. There seems to be no subject which they can't turn into their mindless drivel. Give us a killfile or only allow registered comments, MDN.

Jul 03, 09 - 11:46 am Comment from: @jarrettdailynews

You, sir, are spot on (regarding your father's service). I have never asked for and will never ask for, a thank you for my service. I have received them and yes, I was truly grateful. I feel that I did the job I signed up for and that was that. Unfortunately I have run into those in uniform that feel they deserve to be thanked at every turn, by all people. I'm not sure what causes this phenomenon but it is definitely a dishonor to the uniform of the branch that they volunteered for.

Jul 03, 09 - 01:28 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

"Give us a killfile ..."

You mean we could kill Nutcracker? Cool !!! And Hayweed and Rattymouse and oneAwake and, and, and, and .... ME?!?!

That is the stupidest idea I've ever heard of. mad

Jul 03, 09 - 03:31 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

@ mike_in_helsinki,

Thanks for your usual intelligent input. Glad to see that you haven't changed a bit.

You gotta love people who confuse this place with some kind of forum... folks - it's just comments. Nothing else. Say whatever the hell you want, it's anonymous and unmoderated and there ain't no rules... basically. Ever try searching for discussions on certain topics here...? Then you're definitely stupid, so go Obama - let's fund a lot more funny farms for dummies... and tax them to pay for it.

Jul 03, 09 - 08:49 pm Comment from: Road Warrior

This is hilarious, China coming up with an internet filter that only works on Windows machies. I am sure the freedom loving Chinese will get Macs and once the word has spread, well they will sell like hotcakes. It sure makes my day.

It is certainly is icing on the cake to see the reaction here. I guess that is to be expected now that AENUS (Australia, England 'N United States) is pulling out of Iraq. This Obama guy doesn't seem to be he type to go invade a country on a whim like Bush, so now is a prime time to see a good sequel to the American civil war, and if the reaction here is any indication it is not a long way off. It sure it nice to see terrorists fight amongst themselves.

Jul 03, 09 - 11:49 pm Comment from: Zeke

@Nutcracker:

I don't seem to recall ASKING you to join the military or go kill people. If you expect my thanks for doing so you'll wait a long, long time. Yes, I'm a vet, and that was one of the stupidest choices I've ever made. A lot of my friends are still rotting away in rice paddies all over Southeast Asia, and for what?

In other observations, the Chinese may be able to block internet and other content on Windows machines, since that was the main design mandate behind designing Vista (Thanks, RIAA. You've helped create tools that promote and protect totalitarianism), but the problem for all of the totalitarians in the world is that OS X (and every other version of Unix) is fully accessible and customizable.
