Apple Mac OS X Leopard pre-orders double those of Tiger, some VARs say
Friday, October 19, 2007 - 04:27 PM EST

"Some solution providers say pre-orders of Apple's forthcoming Leopard operating system are more than double the volume for the same time prior to the last major Mac OS release, and point to new features and dissatisfaction with Microsoft Vista as key drivers," Edward F. Moltzen reports for CMP Channel.

"Apple is set to launch Mac OS X 10.5, also known as Leopard, on Oct. 26," Moltzen reports.

"'We've probably doubled the backorders of Leopard, compared to what we did with Tiger,' said Patrick Brown, CEO of Brown Computer Solutions, a Brattleboro, Vt.-based solution provider and Apple specialist. 'With the Intel Macs, Apple has significantly increased the installed base. We do expect a very successful launch,'" Moltzen reports.

Moltzen reports, "Chris Gear, marketing director for Macforce, a Portland, Ore.-based Apple specialist, agreed with the assessment of brisk pre-ordering for Leopard and said a combination of the long upgrade cycle, plus tepid reviews for Microsoft Vista, has created a strong sales environment. 'More than anything, it has to do with the biggest growth coming from 'switchers' -- people switching from the Windows platform,' Gear said."

Dammit...release the cat already.

Oct 19, 07 - 03:33 pm Comment from: Jimbo

Next Friday feels like a month away. Sounds exciting. Can't wait.

Oct 19, 07 - 03:33 pm Comment from: JadisOne

As soon as the cat is let out of its cage, I'll be getting two new computers. I can't wait.

--------

That's because Amazon is selling the Leopard pre-order for $109, which is $20 less than buying from Apple directly.

Oct 19, 07 - 03:46 pm Comment from: Bill

Well, there are a lot more Macs out there than there was when Tiger was released...

Oct 19, 07 - 03:52 pm Comment from: Woody

Woot! Six of the top ten Amazon software titles are products specifically for Mac.

Oct 19, 07 - 03:55 pm Comment from: hotinplaya

wish people would quit writing stuff about the launch, hard enough waiting, with out being reminded,

I'm going to go watch the "apple preview on my Apple TV

Oct 19, 07 - 03:56 pm Comment from: Alex

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm not sure how dissatisfaction with Vista would boost pre-orders for Leopard.

Surely, if someone were unhappy with Vista, he/she would be ordering a new Mac and not just the operating system.

More Macs in circulation than when Tiger was released? I can believe that. The Vista reason seems like more of a stretch to me.

Oct 19, 07 - 04:10 pm Comment from: JanKo

Interestingly, according to the same list OS X 10.4 Tiger (40th) outsells Windows Vista (76th)!

Oct 19, 07 - 04:26 pm Comment from: Reality Check

Even I've pre-ordered.

Oct 19, 07 - 04:32 pm Comment from: Mike

Alex - I think they are just implying that there have been a lot of switchers in the past year, some of whom switched because of dissatisfaction over Vista. And now some of these people are buying the OS upgrade.

Oct 19, 07 - 04:35 pm Comment from: Steve Ballmer

What's a "pre-order" for a "forthcoming" operating system?

Oct 19, 07 - 05:00 pm Comment from: shawnpetriw

Even more interesting, 11 of the top 20 are Mac titles. That may actually say more than pointing out the top 2 only.

Oct 19, 07 - 05:19 pm Comment from: LorD 1776

I agree with Alex. Of course, I guess all those people dissatisfied with Vista could be buying used Macs and pre-ordering Leopard for them. Yeah, that must be it.

Oct 19, 07 - 05:42 pm Comment from: Steev

Was Vista ever on Amazon's top seller list?

Oct 19, 07 - 05:51 pm Comment from: Creamed Corn

I must admit, after seeing the Leopard preview, that's it's absolutely awesome update.

It's more polished, more consistant and so much badass over Vista that its not even funny

I will be buying it, along with a new matte screen MacBook Pro (I already have one) because I got a sinking feeling that they will be discontinued in favor of nasty glossy.

Glossy just DOES NOT WORK in a laptop.

So this way I'll have a 10.5 MacBook Pro in matte, will install Vista to give it a whirl.

Will encrypt my Mac partition though.

Oct 19, 07 - 05:55 pm Comment from: Creamed Corn

Correction, I will have two MacBook Pro's in matte.

One will be on 10.5 and have Vista installed, the other in 10.4.

This way I'm covered. Can play Windows games too.

Oh I also have a Dual G5, a 30" a iMac and some other Mac's lying around. A few dozen iPods, I just get a new one when the urge feels like it. Like I want to reward myself for something.

I'm a gadget freak. But no iPhone or iPudTouch. Not until MacWorld when the new ones come out.

Oct 19, 07 - 05:57 pm Comment from: Creamed Corn

Did you see how awesome iChat has become?

Oct 19, 07 - 06:35 pm Comment from: CornHole

VARS who had previously got as many as three orders for Tiger updates report getting six or more for Leopard.

Oct 19, 07 - 06:45 pm Comment from: @ Creamed Corn

Creamed Corn, do you realize that almost nobody cares what you are going to get and how you are going to configure it?

Oct 19, 07 - 07:39 pm Comment from: Shogun

Random Thought: Isn't it possible that Apple could develop an iChat camera affixed on a 32 pin connector for iPhone, maybe on a small swivel? It's not inconceivable. And then you really could iChat on the iPhone...

Oct 19, 07 - 09:41 pm Comment from: Macintosh Sauce

This waiting is killing me. LOL I haven't been this excited about an OS release in a long time.

Oct 19, 07 - 10:12 pm Comment from: andrew

WARNING:

Do not pre-order Leopard from MacMall. I was charged twice for the preorder and they took money from my account. Try Amazon or Apple itself. If you try MacMall, they will charge you twice.!!!!!

Oct 19, 07 - 10:29 pm Comment from: WBFS

What's Vista ! ?

:=))

Oct 19, 07 - 10:53 pm Comment from: @WBFL

Vista is the now discontinued latest product from Microsoft. Vendors are now selling again PCs with XP installed. As soon as the shipped boxes of Vista have gathered enough dust on the shelves they'll be recycled too.

Oct 20, 07 - 01:42 am Comment from: Kitty Litter

"Vendors are now selling again PCs with XP installed. "

That must just be Macs selling with XP preinstalled. Most other machines have hardware configurations and graphics accelerators good enough to run Vista just fine. Vista sales have already totally eclipsed Mac OS X sales.

Oct 20, 07 - 03:31 am Comment from: almux

Apple doesn't need to parade with a big show (like for vista's crap) when providing a quality OS... The user's jugement is far enough to spread the evidence!

Oct 20, 07 - 07:43 am Comment from: Hyperbilirubinemia

I thought Vista was the latest carrier for viruses that allows organized crime to flourish.

Oct 20, 07 - 09:09 am Comment from: Zune Tang

I'm gonna dress up like Bill Gates for Haloween.

Oct 20, 07 - 09:17 am Comment from: critic

@kitty litter

Not true.

There are huge enterprise sales of new PCs that are back to XP. We just re-equipped our company with new PCs running XP. Our IT guys have had massive problems trying to implement Vista into older networks.

Oct 20, 07 - 10:06 am Comment from: MacSheikh

All this talk about buying iMacs, MacBook Pros & all that are really tempting me!

Any chance one of you can buy an extra set and send it down over to my place? grin

No, seriously.

Oct 20, 07 - 02:53 pm Comment from: Papa-Raboon

@Zune Tang

Dress like Bill gates for Haloween eh!!!

Now that is scary however if you really want to freak people out I would suggest you dress like Steve Ballmer grin

Just don't forget plenty of fake sweat and carry a chair with you!!!

Oct 20, 07 - 03:46 pm Comment from: Michelangelo

I prefer macsales.com. They don't bill until it ships. Best support staff (they're NOT in India), friendly midwesterners, IL I think.

Oct 21, 07 - 12:59 am Comment from: @Kitty Litter

Actually it is true. You can get *again* PCs with XP installed rather than Vista. The new OS is such a flop that vendors like Dell, HP, and others offer customers to choose XP over Vista in their new computers. This has NEVER EVER happened before.

Kitty MS fanboy, you should *think* and getting actually informed before writing.
