Apple MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo model to ship this month?
Friday, October 20, 2006 - 06:24 PM EST

MacGadget (Germany) is reporting the following (rough English translation thanks to MacDailyNews reader "g.h." and Americanized by us):

"MacGadget has information that Apple is preparing the introduction of new MacBook Pro model in the near future. An announcement from the Cupertino-based Mac-maker could be made as soon as next week. The main change to the MacBook Pro is, of course, the Core 2 Duo processor from Intel. Other news could be: FireWire 800 in all models, bigger HD, faster graphics cards as well as faster DVD burners. There has been speculation about this upgrade for quite some time. In September, Apple upgraded the iMac to Core 2 Duo. Whether the consumer MacBook will be updated to Core 2 Duo this year remains unclear but possible."

Hopefully Apple will incorporate some of the new MacBook features in the MBP - like the magnetic power cord and especially the magnetic latching system to keep the display closed - mine in ready for a third latch.

Oct 20, 06 - 06:40 pm Comment from: Apple PR

ken,

MacBook Pros already feature Apple's patent-pending MagSafe magnetic power cord connector.

Oct 20, 06 - 07:06 pm Comment from: GoldFishy

Yeah, I agree with part of Ken's comment (and I realize that it already has the magnetic power adapter) about the magnetic latch. My partner has the MacBook and I totally dig the magnetic display closure. I'm waiting for the MBP to get an update and then it's on my Christmas wish-list. grin

FireWire 800 is back where it belongs.

Now start working on FireWire 1600 and for God's sake, use the same connection this time!

Oct 21, 06 - 01:25 am Comment from: Biscuit

OK for the MacBooks - we don't need a Core 2 Duo processor. Just upgrade the MBP so that makes it look better and there's incentive to upgrade (although we all know its hardly faster).

Then upgrade the graphics in the Macbook to like a 128mb Radeon, or maybe 64 will do, so its a nice consumer gaming laptop as well as everything else. People will still buy the Pro for its core 2 processor and all the gimmicks.

Oct 21, 06 - 02:20 am Comment from: Cog

"Americanised by us"?!

Why?

Seriously, when will you accept you have an INTERNATIONAL audience and leave translations (provided entirely as favours) in their original, perfectly acceptable English.

Oct 21, 06 - 04:29 am Comment from: MacB

JDH....after you're done with snifffing glue it's wise to have a look at your system.....I've been using OSX for...well years it is...with exception of the first version all i can say it's just very very stable: we use it on daily basis in our graphic design dep. and we do some realy serious stuff with it like the catlogue production: 700 pages full colour hires bla bla bla bla...(filemaker, ODBC connection with server, OSX server, CS 2 and gigs of artwork/product pictures...the whole nine yards..). When i read about your problems i instantly wondered if you UPGRADED your mac or did a clean install? What mac are you using and what other, system related, software is installed? I think you just have a very unhappy system..wink which is odd because all of my systems are running smooth as silk: from a dual Quicksilver to a mirrordoor up to an dual 2ghz G5...well 4 of them... no problem at all with exception of OS X server where the netinfo dB got corrupted twice: no more login to server...arrghhhh but solved it easily thanks to this great OS.....try it in Windows server....

Greetings from the deep south of the Netherlands, almost near german border...

FireWire 1600 is already there.
It's called SATA.

But I would be happy with FW800 on MBP for now.

Oct 21, 06 - 05:08 am Comment from: Nick

Apple will definitely want to get everything running Core 2 Duo, since Leopard will be 64bit enabled. Vista's ridiculously crappy implementation of 64 bit is going to allow Apple a big head start - 64bit chips need to be in everything though.

MacBooks will still have Intel integrated graphics. Maybe a high-end one will have x1400 or something, but I doubt it.

MacBook Pros will probably not get faster graphics in the 15.4" model - too hot. The x1600 is already nerfed pretty bad to prevent overheating. The 17" model could MAYBE get an x1800, but probably not at 1" thick. I wouldn't expect any graphics card upgrades until next year.

Next spring we'll get the 800mhz memory (4GB max) Core 2 Duo laptop chipsets from Intel, with Flash RAM used for hard drive cache. Upgraded integrated graphics too. 802.11n wireless. 200GB laptop drives. Leopard will have resolution-independence, so expect higher resolution laptops - finally the MacBook Pro HD! There should be faster graphics available by then that will work with the 1" Apple laptops, too. Maybe even Blu-ray drives in laptops, but probably not until fall. We'll certainly see a MacBook Pro case redesign. 2007 will be a fun year for Apple laptops! Price points will probably stay the same...

MacGadget got it dead right a while back - I can't remember what it was - but I do remember that they were the only ones who did get it right.

Oct 21, 06 - 10:36 am Comment from: Andy C.

Jdh, may I suggest you take your Mac to an Apple Store and spend some time with one of the Genius Bar techs. Also, there are some great Mac forums where you can post about your technical problems and get advice on solutions. Apple's Support discussions forum might be of help too.

I think the majority of Mac OS X users would agree that the OS is VERY stable and reliable. If you are having some specific issues, it indicates there is something wrong and you shouldn't take that to mean Mac OS X is just like that. If you take the time to get the problem resolved (whether it's hardware or software) you'll be glad you did!

Oct 21, 06 - 11:05 am Comment from: Dion

Andy C: Thorzine isn't available at the Genius Bar. I suggest 6-10 electro-shock treatments, and then a trip to the Gateway store. They have those metal stools that swivel and make a nice match to the aluminum foil he probally has wrapped around his head.

Cog--

Have you considered the possibility that the translation was Americanized due to the fact that it is being published by an American company? Just a thought...

Oct 21, 06 - 12:39 pm Comment from: Cog

A legitimate news service would present a statement verbatim, even an externally supplied translation (assuming they can't, won't or don't supply their own). Since MDN is attempting to be a legitimate news service, it is inappropriate to change a translation from British or International English (as you'd expect from a German translator) to American purely for the sake of "being American". Actually, it's beyond inappropriate. It's insulting, both to the translator and to the audience.

1) Core 2 Duo
2) Better Graphics - what is the 64mb card all about, apple has to keep up with the competition (i know spaced is needed - but im sure they could upgrade to 128mb card)
3) Dual Layer Burner
