Apple makes it official: Buy a Mac for college, get a free iPod touch or iPod nano
Tuesday, June 03, 2008 - 11:25 AM EDT

Apple has made it official. Now, anyone who buys a Mac for college can get a free iPod touch (or iPod nano, your choice).

If you’re a student, faculty, or staff member and you buy a Mac before September 15, you can get a free iPod touch or iPod nano. All new Macintosh computers and the Configure-to-order versions of these products are eligible, except for Mac mini and 17” iMac.

When you buy your Mac, simply purchase an 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB iPod touch and qualify for a rebate of US$299 or an 8GB iPod nano (silver, pink, blue, green, black, or red) and qualify for a rebate of $199. After you receive your Mac and iPod, just submit your claim online by October 15.

What 17" iMac?

What 17" iMac?

education model only. Available at the online Ed store, or on campus.

Jun 03, 08 - 11:39 am Comment from: Wealthy Industrialite

There's still a 17" white iMac that's only sold to education customers.

How do they know if you are really a student or not?

Jun 03, 08 - 11:48 am Comment from: Tommy Boy

Just remember you don't have to be a student. You just have to pick a college when ordering online.

"How do they know if you are really a student or not?"

i n the stores they do this wild thing, they ask to see your student ID...

online, they ask you to display ethics and honesty.

Tommy Boy has shown his....

Not for high K-12 students, though, only college. Too bad; my daughter is starting 3rd grade; would have been a perfect excuse to get me a free touch. Now I have to wait for another ten years before I can do that (and by then, she'll want that touch, or whatever ends up being the equivalent free device) for herself...

Jun 03, 08 - 12:00 pm Comment from: jtc

@Tommy Boy

you are correct on that one. Luckily where I work now I got a 15% off on the dual 2.5 G5 in 2004 as soon as it was shipping by ordering through cdw.com Though I believe you would need a company account to do that.

Jun 03, 08 - 12:02 pm Comment from: jtc

@Predrag
You brought her into this world.... you can take the free iPod touch or equivalent in 10 years especially if you are paying for the computer :D

Jun 03, 08 - 12:09 pm Comment from: Predrag

Jtc:

Technically, it was my wife who did that, but I get your point and you are right (actually, on both points - bringing her into this world, as well as paying for the computer).

Jun 03, 08 - 12:25 pm Comment from: Zorpo

Grawr. I wanted the deal to offer a free/discounted iphone. I just can't justify $400, but I REALLY want one.

Jun 03, 08 - 12:26 pm Comment from: M@c

FYI,

I just bought a Mac Pro with the education discount only a few days ago. Just called Apple and they honored this education promo for my purchase. Now I'm getting a free Touch.

So it's not ~just~ the computers they have listed on the site. You just have to call Apple.

:(
This means no redesign of Mac notebooks until October. That sucks.

A friend who works for a college recently bought a new Mac. She didn't have her ID with her, but when she could login to her college e-mail account in the store, that was good enough identification to get the education discount.

FWIW.

Jun 03, 08 - 01:26 pm Comment from: @qka

It wasn't worth much.
wink

Jun 03, 08 - 01:53 pm Comment from: Big Mac!

Online you still have to give your student ID number when signing into the store. At least in Canada you do. If only I was still a student and had the money to buy a new MBP. Oh well I have my second gen Macbook which is still working well.

Jun 03, 08 - 02:06 pm Comment from: bon

Why would you ever choose the nano over the touch?

Jun 03, 08 - 02:20 pm Comment from: ElderNorm

Remember.... new college students DO NOT START college until fall. They have been accepted but will not get an official id until then. So Apple is being reasonable about new students getting ready for classes. Also, remember is usually DAD that is purchasing the computer, usually jr. does not have that kind of money.

And hey, a sale is a sale, right??

Jun 03, 08 - 04:13 pm Comment from: drmacnut

People should be honest about whether or not they are Education customers. Thank goodness Apple is not a bear in its approach to online Edu sales. You have to click an "Agree" button which basically says you are telling the truth, and that's enough.

And as bon mentioned, who on Earth would get a Nano instead of a Touch? Can anyone think of a good reason, especially with the software updates for the Touch right around the corner?

Jun 03, 08 - 07:47 pm Comment from: Ampar

". . . who on Earth would get a Nano instead of a Touch?"

Someone who owns an iPod touch or an iPhone. That was easy.

Jun 03, 08 - 09:34 pm Comment from: @eldernorm

Hey are you a 'you-know-what'?

Jun 04, 08 - 12:11 am Comment from: shen

or someone (me) with an iphone and a kid who wants a nano (my son)

Probably means no Mac upgrades through the summer and early fall period. Maybe not until just before Christmas or Mac World? Seems like a long time to not refresh a product.
