Apple: MobileMe Mail, contact and calendar sync now working for all users
Wednesday, July 30, 2008 - 10:07 AM EST

Apple's "David G." is back online over at Apple.com with another MobileMe update:

We have completed restoring Mail service, including historical messages, to all of the 1% of affected members. Thank you all for your extreme patience during this trying time. If you have been affected by this issue and are still having problems we have established a dedicated chat line to reach a MobileMe Mail specialist for help. Please use this dedicated chat line for Mail issues only. By completing this restoration of Mail services, we hope we have put the vast majority of MobileMe Mail problems behind us and can now focus on improving other aspects of this new ambitious service.

Yesterday (Monday) morning a syncing bug was discovered which caused contact and calendar data to not sync properly over-the-air with iPhones and iPod touch. For some users this caused their contact and calendar data to disappear from their devices, but not from their computers or the MobileMe cloud. When we fixed the bug in the late afternoon, the problem resolved itself for most users: their data simply reappeared on their iPhone or iPod Touch. If you are one of those affected users and your data has not automatically reappeared, follow the steps at this link to restore your data.

Next post later this week.

David G.

At last...

Jul 30, 08 - 09:11 am Comment from: shen

i am so lost, between the outage and the complaints and the "some times push others not" that i don't even know what mobile me is supposed to do.....

for all i know it should be cleaning my house, but it isn't!

damn you Apple, clean my house!

Jul 30, 08 - 09:17 am Comment from: MacNScott

Yay! Calendar syncing works again.

Now let's keep it that way....

Jul 30, 08 - 09:22 am Comment from: iWill

Steven J. to David G. :

"Make It So."

Jul 30, 08 - 09:35 am Comment from: minime

David G's web log is now know affectionately as the "G" spot.

Jul 30, 08 - 09:36 am Comment from: MacBart

Well, it still will not sync iCal to my iPhone. This morning it wiped out all my contacts on my iPhone. Mail on the iPhone does not even show an email has arrived via MobileMe until I manually check it (and, yes Push is selected).

Jul 30, 08 - 09:36 am Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

Now let's hear from the .0001% who are STILL having problems.

Jul 30, 08 - 09:40 am Comment from: GizmoDan

I not sure that it's 100%, but I would use it.

Jul 30, 08 - 09:49 am Comment from: Jim - TIV

"Now let's hear from the .0001% who are STILL having problems."

That would be me. It sync's contacts on the iPhone in my contacts application, but not in the phone contacts application. It doesn't sync the calendar, and I can't send or receive email from the iphone unless I turn push off and sync with the computer manually.

Also, the chat program at http://www.apple.com/support/mobileme is still unavailable. I've been trying to get back in touch with support for two days.

So no, mobile me is not now working for "all" users.

Jul 30, 08 - 09:53 am Comment from: DJ

Huh, not for this user -- mail's still out.

And Apple's unhelpful chatperson D*** simply said I was not on the list of affected users and gave me a useless link.

Very helpful not, and a BIG black mark for Apple and D***, whoever that person is.

Jul 30, 08 - 09:58 am Comment from: Jim - TIV

Absolutely freaking hilarious!

I just clicked on the link MDN provided above to talk to someone at the "dedicated chat line".... was connected to "Skip" for about 20 seconds and then up pops a message saying "session terminated"

2nd time this has happened in the past 4 days.

Customer support seems to be unavailable or overloaded.

Jul 30, 08 - 10:00 am Comment from: Jim - TIV

back on the chat line, "a mobileme support representative will be with you in approximately 9 minutes"

let's see how this one goes.

Jul 30, 08 - 10:05 am Comment from: QED

Is it safe to come out now?

I've been hiding in .Mac land in OSX 10.5.2 syncing my iPhone manually until all this blew over.

Chaps, I think we got used to Apple getting it right so much that it's a genuine shock when they don't.

Jul 30, 08 - 10:06 am Comment from: Jim - TIV

wait time has gone from 9 minutes to 11 minutes now. getting coffee and a banana.

Jul 30, 08 - 10:08 am Comment from: Jim - TIV

13 minutes... gonna need reinforcements soon.

Jul 30, 08 - 10:20 am Comment from: Macaday

@Mac+,

Having seen the nature of your comments over time I think you wanted this to go on a lot longer.

For those of us with confidence in Apple's competence, gained over many years, the fact that has been resolved in a couple of weeks is no surprise whatever.

And, instead of saying 'at last', I congratulate Apple for achieving one of THE most spectacularly ambitious, complex and difficult product launches in the history of technology.

Jul 30, 08 - 10:22 am Comment from: Jim - TIV

was down to 8 minutes on the wait, now it's back up to 11. I think Steve is just messin' with me. Jes' cause he can.

Jul 30, 08 - 10:23 am Comment from: Jubei

I hope they start calling it Push again. For me it sure works like PUSH alright. Between work and mobile me, my iPhone goes bling bling bling all day long. grin

Jul 30, 08 - 10:29 am Comment from: Jim - TIV

Jubei... true push would be nice. Let's hope it comes in the 2.1 update.

Jul 30, 08 - 10:36 am Comment from: qka

But iDisk public folders are still not working.

A new MobileMe feature that I could really use, instead of trying to figure out how to e-mail really big files.

Jul 30, 08 - 10:39 am Comment from: Fair and Balanced

@ Macabart

Try restarting your iPhone. Lightning killed power to my area the other night and seemed to get my 'push' service out of whack. Simple restart got things moving.

Jul 30, 08 - 10:39 am Comment from: Jim - TIV

down to 5 minutes on the wait, now it's back up to 8 minutes. I just know Steve is sitting in his office humming "yellow brick road" and pulling levers while yelling out... "Don't mess with the terrible and wonderful OZ!!!!"

Jul 30, 08 - 10:44 am Comment from: Jim - TIV

so.. it's down to 6 minutes on the wait. So... in 42 minutes of actual wait time, it's gone from an original 9 minutes to 6 minutes of wait. At this rate... just another hour and 24 minutes to go before I get disconnected again! whooooohoooooooo!

Jul 30, 08 - 10:47 am Comment from: THE.MAC.GOD

So that's why my syncing was werid... lame.

Oh... too bad they STILL haven't fixed the iWeb Comment Issue...

Jul 30, 08 - 10:51 am Comment from: Blue Dream

Thanks, Apple, for fixing things quick and keeping your focus in the mirror and setting standards higher for yourself than even we the consumer set for you. M$, HP, Dell, this is why Apple is kicking your butts...they aren't perfect, but their efforts to find and fix and most of all, ADMIT their mistakes are profound for a company yes, that large. Will the media emphasize this?...not a chance!

Jul 30, 08 - 10:52 am Comment from: 49erPress

my iphone has yet to push with mobileme, but pushes well with exchange.

i'd love to know why google calendar can sync with my exchange enabled outlook but mobileme can't. moreover, google is free.

Jul 30, 08 - 11:00 am Comment from: Your Mom BluRay

Now how about working on the freaking iDisk. One day it works, and next day it doesn't.

Jul 30, 08 - 11:07 am Comment from: Jeremy

This headline is a joke. It's what I said would happen last week. They fixed the missing mail for the 1% and now everything is declared "fixed" when it isn't at all.

Still a joke of a service for me, still not working in anything like a useful or usable way.

If it's so slow that you have to wait three seconds after each deletion for it to occur in mail, and if transfers to iDisk mysteriously fail and get corrupted (sometimes without warning) then it's still not up to the level of the old service.

Apple's slogan for MobileMe is:

"Less Features, Half as Fast"

FAIL!

Jul 30, 08 - 11:10 am Comment from: Macaday

Tell me why it isn't Reality Check, and tell me of a single multi-product launch that is comparable or more ambitious?

Cut the insults too, they don't become you.

Jul 30, 08 - 11:15 am Comment from: Jim - TIV

HEY! I'm in... talking with N***. Let's see if we can get it fixed without getting disconnected.

Jul 30, 08 - 11:33 am Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

Jim - TIV,

Don't overdo the coffee and bananas, unless you have a cordless phone.

Jul 30, 08 - 11:44 am Comment from: PC Apologist

Oh, I hope it's "working" the same way it was "working" after last week's announcement that it was "working."

Lies lies lies.. and no support services. Nothing new here for Apple.

Jul 30, 08 - 12:05 pm Comment from: Mr Bill

Not so fast. Sync keeps failing for me....."unknown problem"

Jul 30, 08 - 12:12 pm Comment from: Jim - TIV

SBG.... lol. Good one bro.

Well, it appears that I'm up and running. During the switch over from .mac to .me the preferences got set to forward to a non existent email account. change

fingers crossed....

Jul 30, 08 - 12:16 pm Comment from: @ Macaday

Reality Check is big time right on that one. And I'm not harsh on Apple. I think they've underestimated the amount of people joining MobileMe + they rushed everything when they didn't have to.

"THE most spectacularly ambitious, complex and difficult product launches in the history of technology."

That's the stupidest comment I've ever read + Apple could really have used a multi phase approach to launch these new services.

"the fact that has been resolved in a couple of weeks is no surprise whatever."

I don't think everything is resolved. Just read the other posts...

MobileMess should be free.

Jul 30, 08 - 01:00 pm Comment from: unimpressed

Mail is still spotty. Every time it goes to my POP acct, it dupes all messages currently on the server. Gonna have about 10,000 emails in my inbox if I keep using it.

Jul 30, 08 - 01:00 pm Comment from: roger

From a Windows computer, go to me.com and try the web interface to mail. HORRIBLE. Apple should be ASHAMED of itself.

MobileMe is quite the mess.

Apple needs invest some of its $$$$$ to fix this stuff. MDN and others need to stop making excuses for them.

Jul 30, 08 - 01:20 pm Comment from: not happy

Synching still is not working with my computer. I have been told COUNTLESS times by MobileMe's online support staff that they'd email me a response within "48 hours." This was started July 11.

Jul 30, 08 - 02:01 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

Ben working great for me since the start. Thanks for the 30 days Apple!

Jul 30, 08 - 02:34 pm Comment from: rob

never had a problem with my 'me' mail.... until today, screen is now blank on log in.

Jul 30, 08 - 03:10 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

Jim - TIV,

Keep us informed, buddy. Good luck.

Jul 30, 08 - 03:47 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

unimpressed,

That happened to me a couple of times early on. I got a whole weeks worth of mail again that I had already deleted on my Mac. I guess that's better than losing it.

Jul 30, 08 - 04:54 pm Comment from: @Mac+

Nothing you said there would be a surprise to anyone.

Tell me about those other launches that compare then...

Jul 30, 08 - 06:16 pm Comment from: Gunboat Smith

Definately snappier! Same e-mail that takes 15 seconds to get to the BlackBerry takes 20 seconds to get to the iPod Touch, instead of minutes.

Jul 30, 08 - 06:32 pm Comment from: American in Japan

Maybe I'll try the free trial now. smile

Jul 30, 08 - 11:36 pm Comment from: dannis

please fix the wrong time show on MM webmail as well...so annoying. The time is not correct even all time zone settings are right.

A facebook group for all disappointed MobileMe users!

Jul 31, 08 - 03:37 pm Comment from: Fuji Sartono

My experience so far after this announcement:

iCal to http://www.ME.com = Working

Me.com to iCal = Working

iPhone to http://www.ME.com = Working

Me.com to iPhone = I've not had it work/sync automatically. Even after waiting for more than 15 mins*. If I happen to make a new entry or edit an existing one on my iPhone, my Calendars data gets updated from the cloud immediately.

So now it seems that I have a 2.5-way (not 3-way) cloud synching working.

(this is on a 1st gen iPhone with 2.0 firmware)
