“Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said Tuesday that the iPad market is ‘very big’ and speculated about cannibalization of PCs, while two market research firms upped their forecasts for tablet shipments in 2010,” Brooke Crothers reports for CNET.
“During Apple’s third-quarter earnings conference call Tuesday, Cook mused about the continuing strong sales of the iPad and its potential to eat into PC sales,” Crothers reports. “The iPad ‘is not following typical early adopter curve and taking a long time to cross into the mainstream…We are absolutely selling every unit (iPad) that we can make,’ Cook said.”
Crothers reports, “Cook continued, ‘Our guts tell us that this market is very big…if it turns out that iPad cannibalizes PCs, that’s fantastic for us because there is a lot of PCs to cannibalize.’ …Cook also explained how the iPad may have a positive effect on Mac sales. ‘Historically…iPod created a halo for the Mac and, in fact, as the iPod volumes took off you (saw) a dramatic change in Mac sales. So, could that happen on iPhone and iPad? We’ll see,’ he said. ‘The Mac has outgrown the market 17 straight quarters. However, the Mac share is still low, so there is still an enormous opportunity for the Mac to grow. And certainly the more customers we can introduce to Apple through iPad, and through iPhone, and through iPod, you would think that there might be some synergy with the Mac there.'”

Can I look forward to having a bath in blood? BLOODBATH’s abound!!
Cannibalization is eating your own kind. iPad eating Macs is cannibalization. iPad eating PCs is doing mankind a favor, not cannibalization.
Yeah, eating PCs is more like a public service! Ha!
I met Apple through the iPhone. Now I wonder how I could ignore the mac for such a long time. I guess most people who are not interested in computers just buy windows because that is (was?) what you buy. Since I have a mac (oct09) I enjoy working with a computer! My wife bought an iPad and she loves it, and I got a MacBook for my mother who can now manage her photos all by herself with iPhoto. This last half year has changed our life, well, I don’t have to tell that mac enthusiasts…
Well, if they eat PCs, they’d better make sure they have plenty of fiber… or anti-venom.
hell it worked on me. I bought my first iPod in 2005, convinced my sister to buy mac in 2006 so i can play around with it and see if i liked it. 2007 bought my first macbook(black) still love it and of course iPhone, 2009 bought an iMac, appletv, iPhone, airport. 2010 macbook pro, and iPad.
Damn you apple for making great products worth buying. But hey you gotta buy all your toys as a guy before you get married right. cuz everything from what i see goes to decorating, shoes, and kids.
iPads eating PCs; Junk Food!!!
I started in 2003 when I won a Powermac G5, been telling all my PC and non-iPhone friends to join the bandwagon since!
Even my brother who used to scorn my iPhone Gen 1 is totally loving his 3GS and can’t wait for iPhone 4 to be launched here.
These day’s he’s the one who would update me with all the coolest apps. And he’s also planning to get a MBP … Haha!
Hey, at least Apple is talking about the Mac! It’s been a while since the spotlight has been on Macs and not on iPod, iPhones, etc, etc.
I’m ready to see some smokin’ new Mac hardware!
Nom nom nom!
I started in 1993 with a 100mhz Performa. Never a virus…never a virus program. I did have a Quantum hard drive go bad on me once.
@ RePlay
Right on, you nailed it.
@Asterix
Welcome to the party! I came over to the “other side” in 2006, and have convinced at least 10 other people to switch since that time.
This is the story and the PC Road Map.
“iPad cannibalizes PCs, that’s fantastic for us because there is a lot of PCs to cannibalize.”
I am seeing a giant halo around all things Apple!
@Asterix
Although I have used Macs since they came out and Apple II and III) including a Lisa before that, I have to work with both at work (scientific equipment mainly use cheap PCs). I have had Windows on my personal laptop for many years now and I have only used it for two reasons:
1) To check my Powerpoint presentations done on the Mac
2) To embarrass (while enlightening) my PC friends
Again Tim – Read the article I wrote. I talk about it all in there. I got it. Article: iPad: Do They Really Get It? -RC

Yes, some iPad users may have purchased an iPad as their mobile computer instead of a MacBook. However, after the predominantly Mac-using early adopters got their iPads, the majority of iPad buyers will be Windows PC users. And many of those Windows users are still on older Windows XP machines that need to be replaced. Their iPad experience will make them seriously consider getting a Mac instead of another Windows PC. Apple said on the conference call that more than half of Mac customers during the quarter were first time Mac users. So when Macs are sold, Apple is replacing more Windows PCs than old Macs.
One of the execs said having a small current market share for Mac is a good thing. There are still plenty of Windows users out there to gobble up. Any “cannibalization” caused by iPad will be more than offset by the new Mac users it creates.
iPods and iPhones brought folks to the Mac. I suspect that iPads will bring folks to the iMac in particular. After all, they’ve already got their “sports car”. Now they need the “truck” for the serious work. Me, I’ve already got my beautiful truck (’08 iMac), and I’m looking forward to Apple’s 2nd gen iPad – next year’s “sports car” purchase.
Zune Tang will probably be the very last windows PC user… Before him, all the non-Mac users will have tested Linux for a while.
I started in 1988 with a Mac Plus. I had a CDROM drive break on my G4 (new one by FEDEX – free next day), a Time Capsule fail (it was replaced free with a better model) and a laptop battery swell up, temporarily disabling the trackpad (replaced free by apple care same day and trackpad was fixed by new battery – I use a wacom, so missed no work).
That’s three incidents – zero $ to fix and zero down days in 22 years of heavy graphic design use. I’m happy that people are finally seeing the light – the world needs less frustration.
@ almux
The person who posts as “Zune Tang” already is a Mac user. Only a Mac user and Apple fanboy would know how to tweak reactions from other unsuspecting Apple fans as amusingly as Zune Tang.

a Performa 460 > PowerBook 5300 >
PowerBook G4 (12″) > Power Macintosh G5 dual core > iPhone (1st Gen) > MacBook Pro (15″) > iPhone 3GS (2) > iMac (09′) > iPad > soon iPhone 4 and along the way helped in a Matrix way to convince many many to go Apple Mac, iPhone, iPod, MacBook or Pro and several to iPad. But the Best of all is that others have bought AAPL stocks and making money
… Next year Apple will pass ExxonMobile to be number 1 USA company
Look CAREFULLY at what this guy says in this newspiece:
Colin Gillis of BGC Partners. “One of the points we’ve been trying to make is that there is a virtuous circle going on with Apple, as customers who are exposed to the iPhone and iPad also want a Mac.’
I started my computer career with the IBM-PC in 1981, and from 1982 to 1991 I made my living out of that “standard”. I hated Apple! After being a BlackBerry user I saw the light (was born again!) 10 months ago with the purchase of an iPhone 3GS 32GB. Then I got my 4th daughter into one. My sister, my father, my cousins, my best friends all followed. Then I got an iPad 64GB WiFi the day it came out. Sold it the day the iPad 64GB 3G came out and got myself the new model. 2 of my daughters bought Apple laptops. Then I ordered the iPhone 4 on June 15h. Got it the 24th.
Yesterday I went to the Apple Store to reserve THREE iPhone 4s for my other 3 daughters. While waiting for my turn at the store, I discovered the iMacs. WOW WOW WOW! Now I’m set to buy the 27 inch top of the line before the month is over!
Talk about a “virtuous circle”! This guy Gillis knows what he’s talking about! It seems I’m not alone!!!
APPLE ROCKS!!!
@ken1w
You are spot on. regarding Zune Tang.
It took a few reads, but Zune Tang’s schtick is exactly that: tweak the fanboy a bit. Most folks, I think, get Zune Tang. It funny to read thos that don’t.
