Apple patent app details ‘active packaging’ for iPhones and iPods
Thursday, July 02, 2009 - 12:20 PM EST

Financing Options"Known for thinking outside the box, electronics maker Apple Inc. is now apparently working on an in-the-box concept that could provide power to iPods, iPhones and other electronics devices still inside their retail packaging, allowing them to display demo videos and receive firmware updates while hanging unopened on a shelf in a retail store," Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider.

"In a new patent filing discovered this week by AppleInsider, the Cupertino-based company notes that traditional packaging for an electronic media devices includes plastic or cardboard containers and boxes that house the electronic media device," Marsal reports. "The outside of the container or box is typically printed with various labels, advertising, device specifications, and other useful information that allows the consumer to make an informed decision whether or not to purchase the electronic media device."

What about induction coils built into the shelves and the devices so no more cords!!!

Jul 02, 09 - 11:28 am Comment from: TowerTone

I knew I should have patented my 'active package'...

Jul 02, 09 - 11:29 am Comment from: coolfactor

That's actually a really cool idea! It would create a better user experience when a purchased device is already up-to-date when opened. And the demoing feature would add some life to the selection process, without compromising the internal battery.

But, what about disposing of this "active packaging"?

Jul 02, 09 - 11:31 am Comment from: Thinker

This could be extremely helpful for consumers and Apple Store employees alike in regards to identifying dead on arrival units. However, might it also shorten the lifespan of these devices' screens, and/or the devices in general?

Jul 02, 09 - 11:37 am Comment from: Bizlaw

What a colossal waste of energy. Think of how many iPhones and iPods an Apple Store has in it at any given time, and now they're all running constantly?!? Not to mention the fact that virtually all retailers keep iPods and iPhones locked away somewhere so that they don't grow legs and walk off.

Obviously there would need to be some mechanism for turning them off when they're not being displayed. But how much extra would this fancy packaging add to the cost of my iPhone?

Jul 02, 09 - 11:42 am Comment from: Cubert

I've got an active package for ya! (heh, heh, heh)

Jul 02, 09 - 11:48 am Comment from: TheConfuzed1

I agree that this would be a waste of resources, and it would result in a higher price for the consumer as well.

What's the point?

Jul 02, 09 - 11:50 am Comment from: HueyLong

@Cubert:

Wow, that took six posts before someone stooped to the obvious.

Congratulations, you win today's prize...

Jul 02, 09 - 11:50 am Comment from: Randian

King Hussein and His Court will never, never, never allow something like this to come to the marketplace. It's not green, it's not brown, it's not unfriendly enough to the average consumer. And, besides, I don't think it was his idea, so . . . .

Jul 02, 09 - 12:02 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

And it only took nine posts to stoop to the stupid.

Jul 02, 09 - 12:15 pm Comment from: Gordon Horne

@HueyLong,

Two, actually. Notice the quote marks in TowerTone's post.

Jul 02, 09 - 12:27 pm Comment from: Loru

I dont like this idea! I like knowing that when i buy a new product, it hasnt been used for hundreds of hours before. Especially LCD's!

Jul 02, 09 - 01:05 pm Comment from: Dallas

I'm sure this will never come to light, but It sure seems wasteful doesn't it?

Jul 02, 09 - 01:20 pm Comment from: TowerTone

Alright, guys, let's be obvious.

The only real need for this is for a high-turnover or in demand product, where a set number could be charged everyday for the next days sales.

My iPhone had about a 70% charge when I got it, so it had ALREADY been charged and ready to use.

It would seem to be much easier for the stores to keep a set number fully charged rather than have ALL charged before leaving the factory.

Jul 02, 09 - 02:21 pm Comment from: Cubert

HueyLong,
You have to give half credit to TowerTone for his post. So, we'll share it - like the half a tackle football stat.

Jul 02, 09 - 02:51 pm Comment from: BC Kelly

Dunno, be careful giving out credit

Tone's "package" probably hasn't been "active" since last days of disco

LOL

Randian,

King Hussein has been dead for over ten years now (his son, Abdullah II has been the king since then). Do you actually even know what you're talking about...!!???

Jul 02, 09 - 04:01 pm Comment from: TowerTone

BC
That's actually when it started!
I did, however, take the 'aging' off of the 'packaging'....

Jul 02, 09 - 04:12 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

Sounds like a subtle testimonial for 'Extenze'.

Jul 02, 09 - 04:24 pm Comment from: BC Kelly

TT

Yes, we can tell by the way you use your walk

You're a woman's man, no time to talk

grin

Note to self ...

If in Apple Store with TT and his "package" - be sure to avoid any "display demo videos"

And damn sure get out fast if it might "receive firmware updates while hanging unopened"

wink

Randian, you're still alive, you're still an idiot, and you're still a cunt . . . good to know.

Jul 02, 09 - 04:39 pm Comment from: lurker

Predrag,

Randian is a teenybopper trying to act like a Republican. He knows little and understands less.

Jul 02, 09 - 05:05 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

"... a teenybopper trying to act like a Republican."

And we all know it takes at least three decades to get that stingy and mean spirited. wink

Jul 02, 09 - 05:55 pm Comment from: TowerTone

"And we all know it takes at least three decades to get that stingy and mean spirited."

Apparently I started at that early, too.
1976, junior high, debating Carter or Ford for President.
That's when I learned I was a Conservative.

Jul 02, 09 - 09:39 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

@ TowerTone,

Carter or Ford. What a choice that was. I myself was rather politically ambivalent at the time. But at least I met my future wife in '76. That made the Bicentennial an even more memorable event for me.
