Apple patent app details wireless ‘remote wand’ for future Apple TV versions
Thursday, March 12, 2009 - 10:42 AM EDT

"Apple is exploring the possibility of including a wireless 'remote wand' with future versions of its Apple TV media system that would provide users with precise control over a cursor on the Apple TV screen in very much the same way a conventual mouse controls a cursor on a PC," Sam Oliver reports for AppleInsider.

"The wand, which was revealed in a patent filing published for the first time this week, would control the movement of a cursor displayed on aTV screen by the position and orientation at which it is held by the user. As the user moves the wand, the on-screen cursor would follow," Oliver reports.

"Unlike the current 5-button remote shipping with the current version of Apple TV, the wand would be capable of controlling a plurality of new operations and applications that may be available from the media system, including for example zoom operations, a keyboard application, an image application, an illustration application, and a media application," Oliver reports.

we have no remote control as it is!!!

potato...er.. the white thing with like 6 buttons? thats the remote... this patent describes and Nintendo Wii-like interface.. is that better? I think the current remote and UI is totally clean.

On the other hand, when choosing a movie, from the 'posters'.. do you really wanna go down down down, right right click, or do you just want to point and click?

I hope it has the 3D depth ability demonstrated with a hacked WiiMote.

The first screen cartoon shows an icon for Safari and a generic app, so maybe downloadable apps are coming for the AppleTV.

@wefinish-
then I think you're doing something wrong. My iPhone syncs the address books on my home iMac and my work Dell jsut fine- and has since I got it.

the current apple remote was cool (as a concept) when it first came out, these days its the biggest problem with the appletv. I use a Harmony 1, c'mon apple - blow us away.

Oh great. Now some analyst is going to start crowing that Apple and Nintendo are working together on a Mac Netbook Wiimote iTouch Pod with a 12" screen. 2 days later the stock will collapse because Steve doesn't have one selling yet.

Stoopid expectations. angry

I love the way the Wii remote goes in any direction while surfing by holding the back button

Make it look like the Harry Potter wand.

I think the next great input innovation will be the glove thingy. Yeah, I know it's an old concept, but with modern tech it can really take off. The device goes on the back of the hand, extends to the fingers, and can recognize fine finger movements, as well as whole hand motions. You'll be able to touch, pinch, punch, throttle, grab, roll, point, shoot, draw, crush, select, and even type. If done correctly you'll be able to still type on a physical keyboard, raising the hand only a hair to point or gesture (obviating the need for a mouse, even). It is more elegant than a touch screen, but allows multitouch gestures, and would work with Apple TV (or any TV or gaming console, ideally), as well as your desktop computer. And add it to a multitouch keyboard surface with an onscreen reference, and you fix the problem with having to look down at a multitouch keyboard to figure out your position on the keys. We now have all the tech in place to make such a device feasible (accelerometers, potentiometers, gravitometers, infrared, bluetooth, etc.).

You can bet someone will get there in the next 5 years (it's a logical extension of the Wiimote, and other gamepads, after all), and if done correctly (ala Apple), it could be a truly elegant and helpful experience.

And the business potential? You'd need several for every home with a game console. You'd need them for Keynote and office presentations (how cool would that be if you could draw and point on your slides?). You could use them for your desktop computer. You could, if designed universally enough, use one for every television with a complex menu and/or internet interface (which will be most of them, within 5 years).

It is nice to have both control features (as on a Wii control stick). Sometimes you point and click, other times you use the direction pad. A home button or even a few dedicated menu buttons (e.g., movies, photos, etc.) might also be nice, even thought that would be in opposition to Apple's crusade to rid the electronics world of buttons.

Yeah, I had one of those gyroscopic mice, that allowed me to wave it at my screen. I used it for presentations. I think the company that made it was called Gyration. Anyhow, it was a bit tricky to use, the iPhone makes a far better clicker.
