Apple poised to debut new Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme models
Monday, March 02, 2009 - 04:23 PM EDT

"Apple is poised to introduce new versions of its Time Capsule wireless backup appliance and AirPort Extreme 802.11n wireless routers, regulatory filings with the Federal Communications Commission reveal," AppleInsider reports.

"A filing for a new AirPort Express was originally lodged in January and granted on Monday, while a filing for a new Time Capsule was first made back in August of 2008 and also granted this week," AppleInsider reports.

"Typically when the FCC publishes authorization documentation for a new Apple product, that product hits the market within days of the grant being made public," AppleInsider reports. "It should also be noted that Amazon recently slashed the price of the current generation Time Capsules by 13 - 22 percent, a move which may now be seen as an inventory clearing measure ahead of new models. The 1TB Time Capsule was marked down $112 to $387.92 while the 500GB model was reduced by about $40 to $259.31."

Can the US Gov buy this for me? As part of a bailout maybe?

Mar 02, 09 - 06:04 pm Comment from: thethirdshoe

I got yer bailout right here... LOL

Everybody knows you purchase a Time Capsule so you may bail yourself out . . .

The enterprise-class HD is great and all, but a RAID, maybe a 1TB RAID 1 would be nice for serious data protection. Of course, they'd have to make it bigger... Although, if you use Time Capsule just for time machine, your computer holds the first copy.

@Connor MacBook -

Just a note - It's very easy to do this yourself. Buy the 500gb model and put in a 2TB western digital from NewEgg (or your favorite electronics retailer.)

There are clear instructions online.

I'll just add a bigger hard drive to my original square AirPort Extreme (802.11n) base station as I need more space. smile

It works quite well with an USB 2.0 external drive, as long as you don't try to connect it through a USB hub (or use an enclosure with a built-in USB hub).

Bill... Absolutely, RAID is the way to go for a serious backup!

Just get one of the LaCie 2big RAID drives to use with Time Machine. I have one and it's great!

@DreamTheEndless

Thanks for the tip! Still, if they bring out a 2TB model for around the same price as the 1TB, I'm there.

With all of these cloud backup services cropping up, I really don't see the need for time capsule anymore. I see the value in Apple's Airport extreme, but not the time capsule.

I wish they would stop microsofting time machine and allow it to work with non-Apple NAS drives.

Just my $0.02

Good thing I didn't break open that 1 TB Time Machine I purchased last week!!!!

I bought it for my wife's backup. I use a Drobo "stand alone" RAID for my major data storage and another for my Time Machine backups to backup both my MB Pro and the first Drobo.

Yes, it is costly... but what I do entails sitting at a computer all day.

How costly would it be to lose all my work? Way more than having a proper backup in place!
