Apple prepping huge Canadian flagship Apple Retail Store for Montreal
Wednesday, August 15, 2007 - 02:12 PM EST

"Apple Inc. is finalizing plans for its first Canadian flagship shop, a spacious multi-story retail outlet to be located in the heart of Montreal, a source tells AppleInsider," Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider.

Apple "is reported to have secured some 9,300 square feet of space along the 1300 block of Rue Ste-Catherine Ouest, where it plans to heavily alter -- but not raze -- an existing structure," Jade reports.

"Plans also call for the building to receive a new roof and stainless steel facade," Jade reports. "On the interior, Apple's proposal calls for two stories of retail sales space to be joined by a trademark glass staircases, similar to the one found at its SoHo, New York and Regent Street, London locations."

"Apple hopes to begin operating out of the Montreal location during the summer or early fall of next year," Jade reports.

How do you say iPhone in French?

Aug 15, 07 - 01:42 pm Comment from: Canadian

I was just in that neighborhood last week. I saw that they were doing some renos to La Bay. I don't think that'll be the building though. Can any locals provide details?

I know people outside Montreal and Toronto won't be too happy. That would make 2 locations in the Montreal area and 3 in Toronto. Vancouver and Calgary have been rumored about getting an Apple Store for a while.

Aug 15, 07 - 01:47 pm Comment from: Crabapple

@ Spark,

et vous iphone?

non! je suis iphone!!!

Is an iphone an iphone by any other name?

Think Different!

Aug 15, 07 - 02:09 pm Comment from: Siebel

Seems that the store will be located on Ste-Catherine Street, corner of De La Montagne, in front of Ogilvy.

Right in the middle of all the flagship stores in Montreal.

Aug 15, 07 - 02:10 pm Comment from: hello world

what about Calgary?
There was a HUGE iPod Ad on a face of a building downtown Calgary...

Aug 15, 07 - 02:10 pm Comment from: Canuck

Apple never gets it right in Canada. Why in god's name would they build their first flagship store in Montreal. Toronto would be a much better choice so would Vancouver or Ottawa. Oh well at least we'll get the iPhone sometime after South Korea...

Aug 15, 07 - 02:12 pm Comment from: Quebecois

Good news !
But i'm not sure the glass staircase will last long with all the sand the city puts on the sidewalks during winter. It tends to stick to your boots and you carry it everywhere !
We'll see.
And I want an Apple Store in Quebec City !

Aug 15, 07 - 02:27 pm Comment from: MacCheech

Yessssssss sir!
Finally a Temple in my home town.
It will be located corner La Montagne (near Crescent st.) facing Ogilvy. Very hip location.
Now... the only thing missing in Beaverland: the iPhone!
If only Rogers (ATT Canada) would come to sense and lower their rates...

Merci Steve.

@ Spark : you can say Aïl-Faune wink

Aug 15, 07 - 02:39 pm Comment from: Raymond from DC

If I remember my Montreal geography, that's the main drag downtown, a few blocks from McGill U, where I spent two years way back when. I expect there will be many more students carrying Macs within the next year or two.

Aug 15, 07 - 02:43 pm Comment from: Scott

Hell no to Rogers carrying the iPhone they rip people off!

Hey Apple get with Google and start a new test cell phone company up here....please.....please...we're not so big population wise.

Aug 15, 07 - 02:51 pm Comment from: No Squirt For You

I was in Montreal for Expo 67.
I'm guessing the city might have changed some since then.
I'd like to go back. A flagship Apple Store is a good reason!

Aug 15, 07 - 02:55 pm Comment from: mAc-warrior

Why Montreal? Toronto is a more central location, and is surrounded by a greater population (in metropolitan area AND in a 300km radius). Maybe they're thinking of having one in Montreal and one in Calgary, to kind of balance out the geography of the country. Having a store near to each coast but not on it makes sense to me. And before you accuse me of being Pro-Toronto, I'm from Saskatchewan. A store in Calgary would be nice, and seems like a realistic goal.

Aug 15, 07 - 03:18 pm Comment from: Tommy Boy

Apple already has three stores in Toronto, this will be their second Montreal location.

Aug 15, 07 - 03:20 pm Comment from: niclet

@ mAc-warrior:
I'm pretty sure that Toronto will also get it's Apple Store.

Besides, Montreal and Laval will probably be the only french (bilingual) Apple Stores in Americas! So, it's surely a strategic move that will not stops other Stores development.

Aug 15, 07 - 03:52 pm Comment from: Lee

Why Montreal?

Real Estate and retail space is cheaper in Montreal than in Toronto or Vancouver. Also, I wonder if Apple is trying to raise is profile in Quebec.

Aug 15, 07 - 04:10 pm Comment from: x

Canadians are like Johnny's Pizza ... there're kinda nice.

Aug 15, 07 - 04:27 pm Comment from: TenaciousDNA

Jees, aay...

Yer gettin a flaigship store, eh? Ya dont gatta pouut aboot it...

Aug 15, 07 - 04:32 pm Comment from: Buster

@Bill,
As a Montrealerr I take exception to that. If there is something you do not like about Montreal, spit it ouit. If not STFU!
Montreal is the greatest city in Canada (I was raised in the west before people start crapping on me). THe people are friendly and helpful...even to americans (ha ha)!
Yes we do have a store in nearby Laval which surprised the hell out of my why Apple ever did that...and it is a great store by the way.
Welcome Apple to the land of Poutine

Aug 15, 07 - 04:49 pm Comment from: milkydj

The store is in Laval (island north of Montreal), not even in Montreal. Kinda wierd if you ask me... Though makes sense if they had always planned to build a flagship store downtown MTL. Anyways, flagship store downtown! Can't wait!

Aug 15, 07 - 05:32 pm Comment from: beatboxrob

Why in the world is there no Flagship on Queen St W in the Tdot?!??!?!
I've seen 4 spots for prime "Apple-Land" get gobbled up by the likes of American Apparel, H&M;, MEXX, and soon Urban Outfitters in the last few months. Meanwhile, we have 2 tiny stores in outer GTA-Toronto, and one OK size store in the Eaton Centre. They could've taken Queen & Yonge even! Maybe someday.. ..Toronto loves you WAY more than Montreal

MDN MW: From, as in: "You're 'from' Montreal, eh? I hear you have a way better Store than us:("

Aug 15, 07 - 06:25 pm Comment from: boisdeteck

Why Montreal? Is that a real question!?

Because Montreal has style! "Think Different" is the slogan not "We like people with cash and no taste";)

Aug 15, 07 - 06:27 pm Comment from: ABQ Peter

@no squirt for you:
i was in montreal for expo 67 also. i grew up in northern new york, about halfway between montreal and new york city.

Aug 15, 07 - 06:32 pm Comment from: Big Al

'in Montreal for Expo 67', been there, ' spent 2 years at McGill' done that.

The new Apple flagship store will be a Metro (subway) ride away from Canada's second and fourth largest cities, Montreal and Laval.

It's not The Center of the Universe (Toronto) but it is a good choice for Apple's Canadian Flagship Store.

If anyone at Apple is reading, Calgary is the fastest growing city in Canada. Calgary is the Canadian city with the highest per capita income. It's population has the youngest average age. There are more university graduates in Calgary than any other Canadian city. Last but not least, Calgary has the highest birth rate of any city Canada.

The second best place to buy a Mac in Calgary is a chain of Drug Stores, the third best is a Camera Store.

Fertile ground for an Apple Store, HINT, HINT, HINT.

Why is it you only have to mention the word "Canada" in an article in the US and all the trailor trash comes out of the woodwork (as shown in the above collection of idiotic comments)? Why are some people in the US so hung-up on other cultures?

Aug 15, 07 - 07:17 pm Comment from: US_rules

'cause we now the rest are scum!

ABQ Peter: My family drove to Montreal from Atlanta in a VW bus. Quite a trip. I remember that the crowds at the fair were constant and beyond huge. But friendly people and lots of fun for all.

Apple had a survey taken, and about 45% of small businesses that do not already use Macs said they would use Macintosh computers if Apple was to open a "real" (flagship) store in Montréal, compared to about 5% in Toronto. One of the reasons is that Apple's computers are so much easier to set up in french (or any other language, by the way) than Windows computers (keyboards, menus, etc.)

Aug 15, 07 - 08:52 pm Comment from: KenC

Yeah, I went to Expo 67 as well, seeing as I grew up near Mt. Tremblant!

Aug 15, 07 - 09:04 pm Comment from: Gilles

@ Baba Euro
"Why are some people in the US so hung-up on other cultures?"

That's not my experience. Almost all my American acquaintances are knowledgeable about the cultures of the world and many speak foreign languages.

Aug 15, 07 - 09:36 pm Comment from: Hello World

@Big Al
I hope somebody at Apple is reading your comments (though i am not sure why Apple staff would visit Apple rumor site like this one smile)

Your comment is an equally inept generalization by the way.

Montreal-- very hip, trendy. It'll work (although I agree with the Calgary contingent). War to Leopard's Timeline. Boo to the world's worst backup software, Backup. Maybe some Apple genius in Canada can finally show me how to get my "archived" photos back from the dead.

Aug 16, 07 - 02:10 am Comment from: Macaday

Apple must already have the largest network of stores that any computer maker has had.

Wonder if one day they will become the largest dedicated electronics retailer...

Possible.

Aug 16, 07 - 03:03 am Comment from: Chriswan

@crabapple

"Is an iphone an iphone by any other name?"

But aren't every french entities supposed to protect their "language of civilized world"?

Translate movie title, dubbing instead of subtitling,

So supposedly iPhone should called iTéléphone or some sort...

and iPod is iCosse...

Top 10 reasons Montréal is a good spot for the Apple flagship store:

10. It is a new topic other than the iPhone. Remember that guy that used to go on and on about renaming this place? This is MacDaily news, and the traffic should be full and diverse. The world comes here.

9. Zune Thang is unsure whether or not there is a Zunes in Canada so he won't make a post down this thread.

8. It stuns and silences the cyber "we think we are the world" loud mouths long enough for les Canadien to have a little yarn.

7. It educates the people a bit about Canadian geography, an excellent preemptive move to any potential invasion. Imagine little Johnny answering the teacher's question: "Should we invade Canada or [insert any country here]?" with " {Insert any country here}.
Teacher- And why is that Johnny?
Johnny-Cause I know where Toronto is already and I have a friend there.

6. You can get sail there by boat from the sea, yet end up docking on fresh water.

5. It has the longest history of the other major competing conglomerates (Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver. Heck I would even consider Halifax and Edmonton, Winterpeg for various reasons. While we are at it, why not shine the Apple logo onto Niagara Falls at night? The Canadians could call it a light invasion.

4. The sport identity of Canada is hockey and frankly I believe that Les Habitants are the flagship there, as opposed to the Maple Leafs. The Senators are hot too, so Ottawa gets my thumbs up. You never want to ignore the Capital city.

3. It is near the park Lafontaine. Class, style and fashion.

2. Ad mare ad mare. Regardless of where the flagship store is located, it's influence with extend from and to sea to sea. That is the beauty of the land and the people who live there.

1. It is the closest major conglomerate to North America's greatest, completely walled and most romantic city...Québec city. I am sure those of you who have been there and shared the intimacy with the place are smiling with memories.

0. The power to be your best is a wonderful complement to the joie de vivre. N'importe où, partout.

-1. Montréal, c'est une femme.
