Apple prepping massive Mac OS X 10.5.6 update
Thursday, October 23, 2008 - 04:44 PM EST

"Apple this week began testing Mac OS X 10.5.6, the next in a running series of updates planned for the Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system, which could prove to be the most extensive yet," Slash Lane reports for AppleInsider.

"The first test build, which reportedly arrive Thursday, is said to contain a sprawling laundry list of system components in need of evaluation. This list, which totals nearly six dozen, names almost every major component," Lane reports.

"In its bare delta form, Mac OS X 10.5.6 is said to weigh in just shy of 350MB," Lane reports. "Last week, Apple stepped up its testing efforts behind Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, providing a handful of its partners with a glimpse at new builds featuring a Finder completely re-written in Cocoa, the beginnings of Microsoft Exchange integration, and a new ImageBoot function."

Now don't be snappy.

Oct 23, 08 - 04:05 pm Comment from: Bruno

You know... I think my Mac just got snappier!

Oct 23, 08 - 04:05 pm Comment from: Chester Cheetah

Let's hope there's a fix included in their for the Aiport Express 2008-003 "update" Apple pulled last week which removed the "n" from a/b/g/n on wireless cards and has been causing havoc with the ability to even turn on Airport. I'm surprised this hasn't even been mentioned on MDN yet. It's all over the support forums.

Oct 23, 08 - 04:07 pm Comment from: Skeeter

Wow - my i just installed it and my Mac is now faster! grin

SNAPTASTIC!

Oct 23, 08 - 04:16 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

Yeeeeeesssssss.... the repair dollars will be flowing in....

Ring... "Uh, something is wrong with my system. I put the disk in, clicked update, and now it won't boot."

Seasonal income you know.

You can tell clients over and over and over "Back your system up completely, do a clean install of OS X Snow Leopard. Put your files back as needed."

Will they listen?

Nope.

Thank god.

I hop this fixes my auto update . . . EFI Firmware and that DVD thingy they just released keep popping up as items i need to install. They've been installed, and in the case of the EFI, 3 times.

Do y'all ever the the feeling that a cucumber is watching you?....

Oct 23, 08 - 04:38 pm Comment from: vanfruniken

Just hoping that finally Time Capsule will be fixed.
Indeed I waited till 10.5.5 hoping this would happen.
So far haven't been able to backup any of my 3 Macs 10.5.x over ethernet.

better "snappy-guy" than "snippy-guy." if the time ever comes when our computers start getting snippy with us, it'll probably be too late for us to watch our backs...

matrix, here we come!

Oct 23, 08 - 04:49 pm Comment from: Macaday

I wonder if in all this older MBP trackpads may get multi-touch gestures?

Oct 23, 08 - 04:58 pm Comment from: WriterGuy

@vanfruniken
Time Capsure works for me, and backs up my wired and wireless Macs. Sounds like you've got a major glitch in your system...

Oct 23, 08 - 05:36 pm Comment from: @Kevin

Do the EFI Firmware update via the web site, NOT Software Update. It requires a bit of hand-holding that S.U. won't walk you through. I finally got it to run on my MacBook after months of S.U. telling me to download and install it.

Oct 23, 08 - 05:40 pm Comment from: bjh

But will it be zippier ?

Oct 23, 08 - 05:58 pm Comment from: MacDave

Snapalicious!

Oct 23, 08 - 06:48 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Will the SNAPPINESS never end?

I can feel it...

Oct 23, 08 - 06:49 pm Comment from: Tommyr

I'm feeling pretty Snap happy about the whole thing!

Oct 23, 08 - 06:50 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

I just updated the GF's work iMac from 10.5.2 to 10.5.5...
and I can report with absolute certainty an extreme gush of snappy!

Oct 23, 08 - 07:55 pm Comment from: PT

OSX updates are starting to approach the size of windows service packs...unlike microsh*t however, OSX updates don't break the OS and/or apps and cause things like dll hell, al a windows...still, it's a little disconcerting an update so big....suggests many, many existing problem, al a windows!

Oct 23, 08 - 07:59 pm Comment from: sparkplug

Snappy and don't forget sassy too!

Oct 23, 08 - 08:15 pm Comment from: MacSheikh

Wait for me!

I feel snappyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!! :-D

Ok, I'm done now.

Oct 23, 08 - 08:39 pm Comment from: @PT

AT least service packs come maybe once in a year or two. You Mac guys are constantly having to download these huge patches.

Is your OS that broken?

Oct 23, 08 - 11:57 pm Comment from: Mac Daddy

Actually, I don't notice any problems with my system. The updates are nice though, they usually address problems that I *didn't* notice. Like, more sna... oh never mind.

Oct 24, 08 - 12:33 am Comment from: Dan

I wonder if this will fix the odd problem that every mac I've used has (Intel anyways)...

It will periodically wake from sleep with the lid closed and then the fans will start full blast... (won't respond and has to be force powered off)

System Log says something about Bluetooth but it's 3 different macs all different generations...

Oct 24, 08 - 04:35 am Comment from: Lord Fontleroy

But does it add any virtual firewire ports to my mac? That would definitely make it snappier wink

Oct 24, 08 - 08:18 am Comment from: DJ

Be nice if Apple puts some snow effort into stability for me.com. It's certainly useful, but not exactly reliable, even now.

;(

Oct 24, 08 - 09:06 am Comment from: Grrrilla

@Dan:

This is just a guess, something worth checking anyways. Make sure in System Preferences that your computers aren't set to "Allow other computers to wake this computer from sleep".

Maybe what you're seeing is the effect of nearby devices (maybe Bluetooth, maybe network).

Oct 24, 08 - 12:29 pm Comment from: Mark

I hope it addresses the problem with difficulty screen sharing in iChat since 10.5.5 came out.

Oct 24, 08 - 01:05 pm Comment from: Peruchito

but it doesn't come with firewire or matte my screen. screw you apple!

jk.

these updates always fix problems i never have. is it just me? my macs have always run perfect (no exageration)

Oct 24, 08 - 07:28 pm Comment from: biruhiko

@kevin: You have to run those updates manually.. You'll find them in your utilities folder.
