Apple preps Mac OS X 10.5.5 release
Thursday, August 14, 2008 - 11:44 AM EST

"Apple last night pushed out another pre-release build of its upcoming Mac OS X 10.5.5 Update for the Leopard operating system, tacking on several more bug fixes to a list that swelled into triple digits a week earlier," Sam Oliver reports for AppleInsider.

"The new build, 9F13, arrives less than a week after Mac maker equipped developers with build 9F9 and warned of a problem with some images that could cause its Aperture photography post production software to unexpectedly quit," Oliver reports. "Wednesday's release, however, is the first since the company launched the Mac OS X 10.5.5 Update beta program three weeks ago to arrive without the presence of known issues, people familiar with the software say."

"Mac OS X 10.5.5 [is expected to make] its debut in the coming weeks," Oliver reports.

More info about what's being tweaked, improved, and fixed, in the full article here.

Uh, yeah, duh. Can't appear in past weeks. And since all future weeks (even those in 2009) are "coming," this is pretty much a no-brainer.

At least until this event.

iCal it.

Will they market it as having "300+ new features!"?

@Lord Kelvin
Just because nobody is around to count the weeks, doesn't mean they aren't there.

Well then, there's only the unknown to fear, I guess. And if they never get discovered, then it'll be a perfect release. Or a happy ending.

Apparently this update doesn't just correct underlying bugs that are obvious to the user but will, yes - you know it's coming, make the OS snappier! It also improves power management of laptops, which has been much crappier on Leopard vs. Tiger. My battery life has shortened significantly since the day I upgraded.

The_Steve,
Get a sense of humor, dude. Didn't you see the little smiley face at the end of HCMIV's post.

I hope they do major QA testing on this update.

QA, you are right. With all the stuff about faulty iPhones etc, we surely don't need something else to appear to be broken now. I surely enjoy Apple products. As I've advocated for purchasing the products, I've add a little egg on my face over the MobileMe mess and the recent 3G issues with the iPhone.

Aug 14, 08 - 03:31 pm Comment from: bizlaw

While the MobileMe debacle and iPhone 3G software issues are definitely problems for Apple, I think it also shows that Apple was correct in being cautious about opening up the iPhone to 3rd party developers and adding additional features too quickly.

I've had problems with many 3rd party apps crashing. Not that Safari has never crashed on me, but I have also had to restart my iPhone on several occasions because it had a software glitch and wasn't recognizing that the headphones had been added/removed, or something of that nature. Didn't have those problems with v. 1.0.

Apple needs to beef up it's quality testing, but as more variables and outside developers come into the iPhone fold, Apple will need to have the iPhone software rock solid to avoid bigger problems.

Hopefully a high level of testing and care is being placed into Mac OS X development also.

This announcement is just like Windows 98 progress bar stating "this will take some time"

My Mac already got 5% snappier after hearing about the update.

Just because nobody is around to count the weeks, doesn't mean they aren't there.

Have we discovered a "weeks" particle that I don't know about?
