Apple pulls Commodore 64 emulator for iPhone from App Store

"Come on Manomio, what did you expect? Did you really think Apple would leave your C64 emulator in the App Store after it was revealed that the BASIC interpreter was still in your software, exposed with a little up, up, down, down, left, right trickery? That's a clear breach of the SDK and well, downright sneaky," Thomas Ricker reports for Engadget.

Manomio states on their website, "Unfortunately, Apple has pulled the C64 Application from their store as it was discovered by some users that it was possible to enable the Basic program through the interface. We have now fixed the issue and our application has been re-submitted for approval by Apple. We thank you all for your support and fingers crossed we hope to launch again over the next few days."

MacDailyNews Take: Only five C64 games were available before the app was pulled (Artic Shipwreck, Dragon's Den, Jack Attack, Jupiter Lander and Lemans). If they get this all worked out (not very smart so far, Manomio) and the app reappears in the App Store, we'll only need one more thing: Jumpman!

Unless it's to satisfy nostalgia buffs, what's the point? The games and other apps for the iPod touch and iPhone beat the pants off anything available for the C64.

That is kind of sucky on Apple's part - I mean the main appeal of the C64 in it's heyday was that you might be able to make your own games. It's not as if this would suddenly create a big market for new C64 games that would compete with the Apple store.

It IS the nostalgia ... being able to play Karateka and Mission Impossible without having to lug my C64 and disc drive out of the shed and hook it up to the TV is going to be awesome.

I'm lost. What's wrong with BASIC? I still use it. Writing in C is hard. Futurebasic may soon Auto-translate basic into C. But what's wrong with putting BASIC (Commodore BASIC), or any other kind on the i-phone?
