Apple reaps hundreds of millions of dollars worth of free iPad publicity

“The amount of free advertising that Apple has received for the new iPad is worth hundreds of millions of dollars over the last 48 hours alone,” Jason Schwarz writes for TheStreet.com.

“The product, which goes on sale in the U.S. Saturday, is the subject of in-depth coverage by CNBC, Fox News, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and practically every local news station and newspaper around the world,” Schwarz writes. “And don’t forget the prime-time product placement in ABC’s Modern Family as well as a cameo in the most memorable Jay-Z moment at the 2010 Oscars.”

Schwarz reports, “If there was any question as to whether or not Apple had reached a tipping point of critical mass those doubts have been removed. All of this free advertising leads to one conclusion: The iPad is going to thrash all sales estimates.”

  1. Yes, but lets not forget that the iPad truly is a game changing device. It’s immersive, and it’s truly a device that can be an extension of ones every day life in the digital age.

  2. There’s where Apple’s incredible secrecy really plays out. Months of rampant, feverish speculation leads to breathless stories and reviews. When iPad is mentioned EVERYWHERE it’s a huge bonus for Apple.

From now on, when tablet or slate computers are mentioned, iPad will be the first thought.

    MINDSHARE is everything.

    @Jubei

Aside from the naysaying FlashUSBPortNoCamera™ dorks, Apple has over 250,000,000 iPod users and more than 75,000,00 iPhone/iPod touch users, the majority of which would seriously consider if not LOVE to have an iPad.

Hey, I’m dying to get mine! Normally, I NEVER buy a 1st version of anything, but the iPad I could not resist.

Couple THAT with how may millions of people who hate/fear their Windows computers, who would LOVE a simpler, manageable, hassle-free alternative that they can just use. And NOT need to pester friends, neighbors or relatives to fix.

Most of them don’t equate fun with computer use, so I left that out.
We Mac people get it, though.

    That Colbert segment was priceless!

  3. Apple and Steve Jobs – Masters of media manipulation. Every person who is a potential iPad customers knows about it. Yet, I have not seen very many “paid for” ads on TV or elsewhere for iPad. It’s largely been “free” publicity.

  4. Secrecy and playing PR amounts to nothing if you don’t meet or exceed the hype with great products. Apple earns this PR. If their products sucked they would be treated like any other company and notgiven any press coverage.

  5. ’cause, you know, it’s all about advertising. Really, it’s just a dumbed down netbook without a real keyboard even, so, who in their right mind would even glance at it unless their psyche had been warped by advertising? That’s why the Nexus 1 is such a huge hit. Every web page you open has the Nexus 1 staring right at you. And the fact that all of the YouTube partners really pushed them for a week after they were given freebies most likely sent the sales through the roof!

  6. @Bream Rockmetteller

Is the Nexus 1 a huge hit? Not according to the numbers I have seen…

As for the iPad being “dumbed down” I think you have missed the point. In fact it has been smartened up for those tasks it takes on… Sales figures will tell the story…

  7. So has anyone made the connection that ABC is owned by Disney and that Steve Jobs is Disneys largest individual shareholder? So I suspect that the modern family episode airing this week was not a coincidence.
I’m not complaining, because this week I’ve made a lot of money on Apple stock, just stating an observation…
