Apple TV software 2.1 released, supports Remote (iPod touch, iPhone control of iTunes and Apple TV)
Thursday, July 10, 2008 - 10:15 AM EST

Apple today released a new software update for Apple TV: Apple TV Software 2.1.

The Update is available via "Software Updates" in Apple TV's "Settings."

This Update supports Apple's free Remote application (allows your iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes on a Mac, Windows PC, or Apple TV) and Apple's new Mobile Me service.

Apple's "Remote" app:
Play, pause, skip, shuffle. See your songs, plyalists, and album art on your iPod touch or iPhone as is you were right in front of your computer or Apple TV.

Remote works with your Wi-Fi network, so you can control playback from anywhere in and around your home.

Apple's free Remote app for iPod touch and iPhone is here.

Now that is cool. We pipe music out to our patio. Now I won't have to get up to skip a song. God I'm lazy!

"God I'm lazy"

I see we're well on our way to that world shown in WALL-E. smile

This is the third site I've seen that mentioned the "Mobile Me" connection without ANY info about it. Does anyone know any specifics about this?

I have been ranting about this application forever... Even though I haven't installed it yet, I think the big deal will be using the iPhone's keyboard to search. That should make searching a whole new experience.

This changes everything.

Jul 10, 08 - 10:05 am Comment from: Macintosh

Searching on TV, that is.

Jul 10, 08 - 10:09 am Comment from: bw

alright, enough with the teasing... release the iPhone 2.0 firmware already!

Now what do I do with the original Apple TV remote?

O technology, how I love and despise thee!

Jul 10, 08 - 10:13 am Comment from: Macintosh

Wall-E,

Keep it for when you leave your iPhone somewhere or don't have your iPhone charged.

"This changes everything."

Quite literally!! (^_^)

Me without my iPhone?

Please, perish the thought!

ps: remember the song "Me And My Arrow"? Now, updated to "Me And My iPhone".

This is something only Apple can pull off. Different sized Mac OS X boxes in different locations, slowly being tied together.

There were rumors floating around that show how much people don't understand Apple's strategy:

New keyboard for Apple TV is one. A lot of people already have a new keyboard for Apple TV, called the iPhone/touch.

Another is a game console. People already have a game console, called Apple TV. They already have a controller called the iPhone/touch. I'm sure there will be more traditiomal 3rd party controllers that can use the Bluetooth feature on Apple TV as well.

I'd be surprised to see new hardware coming out of Apple anytime soon.

Wall-E,

I left it at home once... I felt like I was naked or something.

Does Black Berry or Nokia does this?
Take taht Nokia and RIM's fanboys...

I just downloaded it, how do I get it onto my iPhone???

Jul 10, 08 - 11:04 am Comment from: hairy tunes

Of course you can use your computer with iTunes to control your music remotely, or if you want you can have Airfoil to connect to your Apple Airport Express tied to your stereo. I can't understand what this software is useful for unless you don't have a computer but do have a touch or iphone, which are small computers. I like the 12" G4 laptop best for size and usefulness. The other gadgets are very good for shareholders, one hopes.

It's useful if you have an AppleTV and want a more powerful remote control than the one it comes with.

Though I hadn't checked it out with other recent AppleTV updates, this one maintains my playlist and streams Internet Radio.

Jul 10, 08 - 12:13 pm Comment from: M

Where do you go in the appletv interface to find internet radio?

Jul 10, 08 - 12:48 pm Comment from: M2

I created a radio playlist in iTunes that is synched to the AppleTV. I open the playlist in AppleTV and choose a station. Each station has a radio tower icon, I don't recall seeing that before.

Okay, first of all the App Remote is awesome, now how do I control the menu screen of Apple TV with it? I click YouTube with the Apple TV remoter, then search, then I can use my iphone to search. How can I use the iPhone for the total control.

Don't get me wrong, I can control my iTunes library altogether. But I want to control the entire Apple TV with my iPhone.

Besides that, this is a gigantic hard on creator

Besides that, this is a gigantic hard on creator

It takes a special kind of person to have the sin of the world available a click away, yet only get aroused by a remote control.

Jul 11, 08 - 04:01 pm Comment from: How About Fixing The FireWall?

The sync, both ethernet and wireless, has issues with a properly configured OS X FireWall. Sometimes it works and sometimes the settings need to be changed. This Microsoftian behavior has existed since 10.5 shipped and Apple screwed up the FW. The OS should have never shipped that way and still has not been fixed.

Apple is going to keep messing around on basic security stuff until they get bit hard.
