Apple releases fourth iPhone SDK beta
Thursday, April 24, 2008 - 09:09 AM EDT

Apple has released the fourth beta version of the iPhone SDK which adds OpenGL ES support to the iPhone Simulator.

Developers can now quickly build and test your mobile applications and handheld games using OpenGL ES on the iPhone Simulator.

Yesterday, during Apple's Q2 08 conference call, CFO Peter Oppenheimer said that the SDK has already been downloaded 200,000 times and is currently being used in one-third of the Fortune 500 companies to develop applications for the iPhone/iPod touch.

Could someone create a iPhone app that allows the DS and PSP to connect to it and play online. I would also like to see an app that allows you to give a Keynote presentation via an iPhone or an iPod Touch.

You should be able to view a Keynote presentation already. Convert it to a QuickTime movie and put it on your iPhone.

I'd love to see seamless .Mac integration.

For example:
I change a calendar item, seconds to minutes later, it shows up on my iPhone. I hate having to sync it every time just to make sure everything is happy. As an internet device, it should be treated like any computer with my .Mac info.

Every iPhone/iPod Touch owner should be given a free .Mac account. This is a minimum.

WWDC Session:
"OpenGL ES provides the interface for accelerated 3D graphics on iPhone and iPod touch. We'll compare OpenGL ES to desktop OpenGL, then show you how OpenGL ES can drive iPhone games and other mobile 3D applications. Learn how to access OpenGL ES from Cocoa Touch, and how to tune your code to the performance profile of iPhone."

Actually according to the SDK EULA connecting to a DS, PSP, GPS, or other such devices is goes against the functions of the iphone and the software won't be distributed.

Why is Apple putting such artificial limits on the iPhone is a good question. The Software produced for the iPhone is going to leave people scratching their heads. As there will be random gaps in the offerings.

I hope this is just temporary until the full SDK is released a Bluetooth GPS Module should be able to connect to the iPhone, yet it won't happen untill the legalize changes.

Mac+ says, "Every iPhone/iPod Touch owner should be given a free .Mac account."... or at the least the $30 discount offered with a Mac purchase. Me, I'm just waiting for the 16 GB Touch to drop to $299. But given the weakness of the dollar, the hoped for price drop may not come for a while.

Oh, I'm so happy to hear that Apple has added Open GL support for the iPhone. Maybe now, people like the great developers, for AdiumX will now develop for the iPhone. This is great news as the majority of programming for the jailbreaked iPhone might be considered in that category too. Thank you Apple! wink You won't regret it.

@Raymond: I'm just waiting for AT&T;to put a decent cell tower in Clarendon so I can use my iPhone at home.

I'd love to see seamless .Mac integration.

Why not just let them sync over WiFi instead of forcing someone to purchase .Mac? The only reason you should need to connect a cord to the thing would be to charge it. Everything else could be done over your home/work WiFi network.

@ Guapo

That's fine... I like that idea, but for those of use who DO have .Mac, any change I make to the apps that .Mac applies to should be immediately synced to Apple's .Mac servers.
