Apple releases iPhone 1.1.1 Update with iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store and more
Thursday, September 27, 2007 - 02:22 PM EST

Apple today released iPhone 1.1.1 Update which includes additional new features, bug fixes, and supercedes all previous versions.

New features include:
• iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
• Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
• Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites or music controls
• Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
• Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
• Stocks and cites in Stocks and Weather can be re-ordered
• Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
• Support for TV Out
• Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
• New Passcode lock time intervals
• Adjustable alert volume

iPhone 1.1.1 Update is available via iTunes' iPhone Update (152.3MB).

MacDailyNews Note: We have tested the update on a up-to-date, kosher (locked) iPhone and, after the download, it took about 8 minutes for the iPhone to restart, verify the software, update the iPhone's firmware, and restart again. The phone then waited 10 seconds while re-activating with AT&T. All new features work as advertised. We purchased an album (Foo Fighters "Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace for US$9.99) via the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store and downloaded the album via Wi-Fi in about 3 minutes. Reconnecting the iPhone to iTunes caused iTunes to automatically transfer the purchased album to our iTunes library. It worked perfectly.

THANK YOU.

Made my day snappier.

Sep 27, 07 - 01:40 pm Comment from: R2

Yeah! I been waiting around the computer all day hoping it would arrive.

Sep 27, 07 - 01:42 pm Comment from: Bill

"Louder speakerphone and receiver volume" - I second that.

Could really use a way to delete multiple emails though.

"Why TV out?"

Why no verb, caveman?

(j/k) wink

Sep 27, 07 - 01:43 pm Comment from: Spudly

worked like a charm. no problems at all!

Sep 27, 07 - 01:44 pm Comment from: cynic821

my phone calls are snappier

Sep 27, 07 - 01:47 pm Comment from: Allan

How do you turn off Edge?
Audio does not seem louder.
Mail does not go into landscape mode.
What am I doing wrong?

Sep 27, 07 - 01:49 pm Comment from: Spark

@ Bill
Amen to that. Have you sent Apple that suggestion via their suggestion box. Don't have the link, sorry.

Sep 27, 07 - 01:55 pm Comment from: iphone luvr

my iphone just fixed a plumbing leak in our bathroom!

Sep 27, 07 - 01:58 pm Comment from: newton

Hey C1...is the volume a lot better? I wanted to buy my elderly uncle an iPhone, but I was leery of the low ring volume...he needs a loud ringer and speaker.

Sep 27, 07 - 02:02 pm Comment from: No Squirt For You

It's been almost three months and Apple has simply not gone far enough in updating the iPhone. When I'm on the road, I really depend on being able to manipulate 3D visualizations of simian genome models. I also run algorithms that test proofs on Fermat's Last Theorem and in the background I need to be able to render high definition, catastrophic weather and explosion scenarios. The iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store and louder speakerphone and receiver volume are nice additions but I'm really disappointed.
I sure hope the next software update for my iPhone let's me get back to work. Or at least adds some really cool games.

Sep 27, 07 - 02:03 pm Comment from: Jim - TIV

C1 is right. The speaker volume is a lot better. Just surf'd the wifi itunes, listened to some demos, it a ton better.

Sep 27, 07 - 02:03 pm Comment from: @Allen

The note said ATTACHMENTS in mail can be viewed in landscape mode now. I agree though. I want MAIL in landscape mode. Makes it easier to increase font sizes on some emails I get.

Sep 27, 07 - 02:03 pm Comment from: mini

Adding the 'tv out' capability is awesome! Now if they support Keynote or Powerpoint I could just take this thing along for meetings/presentations instead of my Macbook.

Also, it looks as though they changed the Calculator icon. Or am I just imagining this change?

Sep 27, 07 - 02:05 pm Comment from: Bill

@Allan

"How do you turn off Edge?"
Settings >> General >> Network >> Data Roaming

"Mail does not go into landscape mode."
Mail attachments, not messages as I understand it.

@Spark
yes

Sep 27, 07 - 02:05 pm Comment from: NSFY

Allan asked, "What am I doing wrong?"

Um, you're stabbing your Nokia repeatedly with your thumb?

(kidding) wink

Sep 27, 07 - 02:06 pm Comment from: Mac n' Cheese

@mini: You're right about the Calculator icon.

Sep 27, 07 - 02:06 pm Comment from: easi

Oh boy! Is that a new calculator icon? Matches the touch.

Sep 27, 07 - 02:07 pm Comment from: pissed off

A warning to everyone - Make sure you grab any photos you shot with the iphone BEFORE doing the update.

I updated my UNMODDED iphone and it hung up - forcing me into recovery mode with no other option but restoring the phone. I'll admit that i'm an idiot for not thinking about the photos before starting the update but this is so not cool.

What pisses me off even more is that after the phone finally finished restoring to factory defaults, it immediately asked if I wanted to restore from the most recent backup. Almost everything i had prior to the backup EXCEPT FOR THE PHOTOS is now back to normal.

Why can't Apple configure the damn phone/software to archive (and restore in this case) photos shot with the phone?

Sep 27, 07 - 02:10 pm Comment from: Peter

I just downloaded and installed it. My iPhone now runs much faster and has a minty fresh smell. cool grin

Sep 27, 07 - 02:13 pm Comment from: Tommy Boy

@Alan the EDGE shut-off is buried in the network preferences. Not a logical location.

Upping the phone-lock delay is by far the best feature.

The TV out will rock. That'll save me from buying an Apple TV (and thus a new Hi-Def TV).

It broke iToner's Ringtones. So much for not going out of the way to break hacks.

Sep 27, 07 - 02:14 pm Comment from: Mac_Myke

Now that the volume is louder,I bet there will be people who complain it is too loud and it hurting their ears LOL

Sep 27, 07 - 02:14 pm Comment from: Jonahan

Installed over all my installed apps wiped it back to original without restoring which isn't too bad as I didn't have to reupload all my music/pics again but it looks so bland now :(

Sep 27, 07 - 02:17 pm Comment from: Tommy Boy

@pissed off: Umm, why didn't you let iPhoto grab those photos automatically? That should happen when you plug your phone in.

Sep 27, 07 - 02:19 pm Comment from: Walk away Bill just walk away

Updated flawlessly in about 8 minutes including reactivation and I kept all of my photos.
Gotta love this phone.....

Sep 27, 07 - 02:19 pm Comment from: Goople

worked like a charm. speaker volume improvement is welcome. Wi-Fi store is slick. I downloaded Redd Stylez "Anniversary" as my first track

now all I need is cut n' paste and video recording...lets go Stevo !!

Sep 27, 07 - 02:20 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

1. Yes, it is a LOT louder. Not quite ELEVEN, but say a solid 8.
2. Yes, the calculator icon has changed. I know, it's hard for me to believe, too. It hasn't even been 3 months, and Apple has already been forced to rethink their Calculator icon strategy. This may signal more bad news to come for the beleagured designers of the Cube. Sell AAPL.
3. I have not, as yet, noted anything in my house being snappier.
4. I does not, as I had hoped, make tasty Mac & Cheese for lunch. I must continue to rely on multiple devices.
5. I think I'll put some hot dogs in there, too.

Yes. Thank you indeed. Getting tired of saying "WHAT!?!?" in the phone while I'm driving with the windows down.

Sep 27, 07 - 02:23 pm Comment from: Jim - TIV

Confirm Tommy Boy's assertion, this update broke iToner. Let's wait for the update.

Sep 27, 07 - 02:23 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ pissed off

My phone had to reactivate and restore too, but my photos are all there.

Good one!

Okay, now that these things have been added and/or fixed, it's time for the next round of bitching from people that'll never be satisfied anyway.

Sep 27, 07 - 02:28 pm Comment from: getting closer

getting closer to true potential of this phone. can't wait for the keynote/powerpoint update for iphone!!! yes that's the whole point of the tv out. maybe when apple comes out with the rumored touch pda.

Sep 27, 07 - 02:29 pm Comment from: R2

Wow, the double tap is BRILLIANT! Not only does it work while the iPhone is asleep but also when you're at Home or in another application (at least while music is playing).

Also, when you put it to sleep with music stopped and do the double tap, the overlay still pops up and allows you to pick up right where you left off.

I can't believe something this simple can be such a lifesaver.

Sep 27, 07 - 02:38 pm Comment from: Jim

Tried this. It crashed my iPhone and caused a total restore of the software. No hardware/software modification has been done. It's sitting at home now. Tried to get it done over my lunch break but it took too long so it's sitting in the dock doing whatever it's doing. Hopefully it's all up-to-date when I get back.

Anyone else have problems?

Sep 27, 07 - 02:45 pm Comment from: marc

TV out.... hmm... if they've put Front Row on the iPhone, it could function like a portable Apple TV.

Anybody tried it yet?

Sep 27, 07 - 02:46 pm Comment from: bug or feature?

From start-up screen, before you "slide to unlock", double tap "home" button. iPod controller pops up!

Sep 27, 07 - 02:49 pm Comment from: NSFY

That WiFi Music Store is a bit too convenient. I just caught my iPhone trying to download its own ringtones. Sneaky little bastard. Now it keeps redialing 867-5309.

Sep 27, 07 - 02:52 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

Here's something else - Play a song, and press the sleep button to put the display to sleep. Now double-tap the Home button.
You get the Unlock screen, but you also get audio controls. Did it always do this? Nice.

Sep 27, 07 - 03:03 pm Comment from: NSFY

"Now double-tap the Home button."

Very cool. But now I'm more than a little afraid to look inside the wardrobe.

Sep 27, 07 - 03:04 pm Comment from: Michael

When I go to itunes it tells me that I am up to date with version 1.02. No update happens when I check for an update. Whats up with that?
