Hey C1...is the volume a lot better? I wanted to buy my elderly uncle an iPhone, but I was leery of the low ring volume...he needs a loud ringer and speaker.

It's been almost three months and Apple has simply not gone far enough in updating the iPhone. When I'm on the road, I really depend on being able to manipulate 3D visualizations of simian genome models. I also run algorithms that test proofs on Fermat's Last Theorem and in the background I need to be able to render high definition, catastrophic weather and explosion scenarios. The iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store and louder speakerphone and receiver volume are nice additions but I'm really disappointed.
I sure hope the next software update for my iPhone let's me get back to work. Or at least adds some really cool games.

C1 is right. The speaker volume is a lot better. Just surf'd the wifi itunes, listened to some demos, it a ton better.

The note said ATTACHMENTS in mail can be viewed in landscape mode now. I agree though. I want MAIL in landscape mode. Makes it easier to increase font sizes on some emails I get.

Adding the 'tv out' capability is awesome! Now if they support Keynote or Powerpoint I could just take this thing along for meetings/presentations instead of my Macbook.

Also, it looks as though they changed the Calculator icon. Or am I just imagining this change?

A warning to everyone - Make sure you grab any photos you shot with the iphone BEFORE doing the update.

I updated my UNMODDED iphone and it hung up - forcing me into recovery mode with no other option but restoring the phone. I'll admit that i'm an idiot for not thinking about the photos before starting the update but this is so not cool.

What pisses me off even more is that after the phone finally finished restoring to factory defaults, it immediately asked if I wanted to restore from the most recent backup. Almost everything i had prior to the backup EXCEPT FOR THE PHOTOS is now back to normal.

Why can't Apple configure the damn phone/software to archive (and restore in this case) photos shot with the phone?

I just downloaded and installed it. My iPhone now runs much faster and has a minty fresh smell.

@Alan the EDGE shut-off is buried in the network preferences. Not a logical location.

Upping the phone-lock delay is by far the best feature.

The TV out will rock. That'll save me from buying an Apple TV (and thus a new Hi-Def TV).

It broke iToner's Ringtones. So much for not going out of the way to break hacks.

Now that the volume is louder,I bet there will be people who complain it is too loud and it hurting their ears LOL

Installed over all my installed apps wiped it back to original without restoring which isn't too bad as I didn't have to reupload all my music/pics again but it looks so bland now :(

@pissed off: Umm, why didn't you let iPhoto grab those photos automatically? That should happen when you plug your phone in.

Updated flawlessly in about 8 minutes including reactivation and I kept all of my photos.
Gotta love this phone.....

1. Yes, it is a LOT louder. Not quite ELEVEN, but say a solid 8.
2. Yes, the calculator icon has changed. I know, it's hard for me to believe, too. It hasn't even been 3 months, and Apple has already been forced to rethink their Calculator icon strategy. This may signal more bad news to come for the beleagured designers of the Cube. Sell AAPL.
3. I have not, as yet, noted anything in my house being snappier.
4. I does not, as I had hoped, make tasty Mac & Cheese for lunch. I must continue to rely on multiple devices.
5. I think I'll put some hot dogs in there, too.

Okay, now that these things have been added and/or fixed, it's time for the next round of bitching from people that'll never be satisfied anyway.

getting closer to true potential of this phone. can't wait for the keynote/powerpoint update for iphone!!! yes that's the whole point of the tv out. maybe when apple comes out with the rumored touch pda.

Wow, the double tap is BRILLIANT! Not only does it work while the iPhone is asleep but also when you're at Home or in another application (at least while music is playing).

Also, when you put it to sleep with music stopped and do the double tap, the overlay still pops up and allows you to pick up right where you left off.

I can't believe something this simple can be such a lifesaver.

Tried this. It crashed my iPhone and caused a total restore of the software. No hardware/software modification has been done. It's sitting at home now. Tried to get it done over my lunch break but it took too long so it's sitting in the dock doing whatever it's doing. Hopefully it's all up-to-date when I get back.

Anyone else have problems?

TV out.... hmm... if they've put Front Row on the iPhone, it could function like a portable Apple TV.

From start-up screen, before you "slide to unlock", double tap "home" button. iPod controller pops up!

That WiFi Music Store is a bit too convenient. I just caught my iPhone trying to download its own ringtones. Sneaky little bastard. Now it keeps redialing 867-5309.

Here's something else - Play a song, and press the sleep button to put the display to sleep. Now double-tap the Home button.
You get the Unlock screen, but you also get audio controls. Did it always do this? Nice.

When I go to itunes it tells me that I am up to date with version 1.02. No update happens when I check for an update. Whats up with that?
