R2 Will get pissed because he can't play Pandora while installing the firmware.

I've almost given up, but here's still hoping against hope, this OS will address the behaviour control issue of whether or when Aperture/iPhoto should launch upon iPhone connection to the Mac via USB.

Sometimes, customers just want to charge the darn thing and not go through the hoopla of dialogue box dismissals and unneeded Application launches.

Feb 02, 10 - 03:10 pm Comment from: @krquet

This has been a long standing feature to be able to disable auto launch of iPhoto/apeture upon connecting an iPhone. Maybe since version 1.1 of iPhone software.

Feb 02, 10 - 03:12 pm Comment from: Haha

Snappysnappy SNAPPPPPYYYY!!!!

Feb 02, 10 - 03:12 pm Comment from: Predrag

And an important thing that everyone will have to remember is that this is an update for all iPhones, some of which are over two and a half years old!

No other mobile handset brand/model continues to get software updates two years after its original release.

mine shows a swirling gateway to hell for some reason. but it's a snappy gateway.

Feb 02, 10 - 03:24 pm Comment from: Msavwah

To q above I'm pretty sure you can turn off application launching when u plug your iPhone already. I already did this a while back for iphoto. Check the application preferences

umm ... google "iphone iphoto disable" or something along those lines. be creative, you may be surprised to know that there's a lot of information on the internet these days

here's a hint to just charge though:

iTunes->Preferences->Devices->check the little box next to "Prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically"

How about the ability to change the color of calendars when you have multiple ones syncing with anything other than MobileMe.

How about adding check boxes to the calendars so you can look at any combo of them overlaid together? It doesn't support groups so you either look at one at a time or all of them.

Simple stuff Apple.

@ krquet

Depending on which version of iLife you have, the option to disable is in iPhoto or image capture preferences.

Surprisingly, iPhone still substitutes "upas" for "iPad"

Feb 02, 10 - 04:31 pm Comment from: Derek in Milan

Turn off autosync in iTunes phone window. Than hit sync when you need it.

Feb 02, 10 - 04:32 pm Comment from: mike g

that's it? no safari hanging fix? no sluggish 3G interface fix? no sluggish google maps....have to wait for the map to load...fix? no UPAS fix?

my two iphones (3G's) are HORRIBLE at this point. i've restored them 3 times already. they are so SLOW.

Feb 02, 10 - 04:32 pm Comment from: madgunde

@Britney's Postpartum Sister™

Type iPad a few times on your iPhone and it will learn to not correct it. I've already taught my iPhone how to spell a few naughty words this way.

Feb 02, 10 - 04:36 pm Comment from: Error601

@krquet: the launching of iPhoto or Aperture when you plug in your phone has nothing to do with the iPhone OS, but everything to do with your preferences in iPhoto or Image Capture.

iPhoto 101 basically.

@mike g

Have you installed it yet?

I talked to Steve. He just doesn't like you and is glad you really do not have any iphones because your mommy will not buy you any.

To all the posters above regarding Aperture launching automatically whenever you connect iPhone (with images), I can't answer you all your suggestions one by one, but suffice to say, I am aware of them all, and no they don't apply to this problem.

This is a glitch on Apple's behalf (or a feature in MS lingo). There is no option in Aperture preference to disable this behaviour. Those who suggested to change the option in image capture, well I do want to use that feature when I connect my Nikon D300 to transfer images. The image capture application doesn't have the option to disable just iPhone.
Someone mentioned turning off auto sync, I don't use auto sync, but either way, disabling photo sync still doesn't help if you capture images using your iPhone. Do a search before you criticise.

On that note, someone mentioned Google. Well, yes I have, since day 1, and it's a long running issue with no help from Apple. The only solutions involve loading scripts from ImageCapture whenever iPhone is connected and manually add iPhone device ID and disable it. There are even more crude options out there like auto-quit Aperture upon launching it etc.
These are all lame options, as I would expect Apple to just offer me an elegant (if not basic) solution like: a check box option, launch Aperture/iPhoto/Whatnot unchecked.

Before any suggestions on this, or criticising, please, do what the other poster have suggested, do a search and read up on it. It's an ongoing problem without a solution from Apple.

Feb 02, 10 - 05:06 pm Comment from: Kent

You could use the cameras plugin to disable the auto loading

Feb 02, 10 - 05:10 pm Comment from: Andrus

The update messed up my phone. It now displays everything double-sized and I need to use my finger to sweep behind the edges like in OS X screen magnification feature.

Feb 02, 10 - 05:13 pm Comment from: Andrus

Haha! I just figured it out in the Apple discussions forum. I had somehow switched it on myself. Its solved now!

Please note peoples: BLUETOOTH TETHERING is once more possible with this update. It has returned and mobile configs are recognised and work again. PRETTY NIFTY!

Don't know if there is a different between Snow Leopard versus previous versions but the Image Capture on SL has setting for specific device/camera.

See the screen shots here

http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/1130/screenshot20100202atfeb.png

The Image Capture version is 6.0 (424)

Feb 02, 10 - 05:33 pm Comment from: TowerTone

"The image capture application doesn't have the option to disable just iPhone."

On mine, if I only hook up iPhone and wait, I can click a dropdown and choose an application to open or none.

Then disconnect, plug in the D300 (mine is a D60, but I plug the SD into a card slot that reads it as the same), wait, and then Choose 'Aperture' as the program you want to open when connected.

My iPhone never opens a program. My D60 opens iPhoto.

The only reason I can think this may not work is if you are running Leopard or Tiger. I am running Snow Leopard.

Feb 02, 10 - 05:43 pm Comment from: Uncle Fester's Nephew

TowerTone,
Same story here using Leopard, Camera opens, iPhoto and iPhone opens nothing.

@ krquet

Try Cameras, a free preference pane plug-in @ http://www.flexibits.com/

You can set up different preferences for different cameras. My iPhone does NOT open any photo apps when connected, but my Sony α200 opens Aperture and my point-and-click opens iPhoto. Nice smile

I'm using 10.5.8

Works great.

Feb 02, 10 - 07:37 pm Comment from: @krquet

Try this:

Home Folder>Applications>Image Capture

With or without your iPhone connected.

Open this app
on the main screen lower left hand corner it reads:
"Connecting this iPhone opens:

Use the pop up menu to select:
"No application"

Quit and reconnect iPhone.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for all your kind suggestions. I'll try follow them tomorrow, it's a bit late here right now. Will update if and when I'll find the right solution. Cheers!

To generally improve the snappiness of your iPhone, periodically restore factory settings (after doing a backup first) and restore the iPhone backup. This process essentially includes "defragmenting" your flash drive so it can be read faster, hence making it snappier. You can notice the snappiness when typing fast on the virtual keyboard and the keys can keep up with you, loading apps, no more sluggish animations, etc.

This software update may have improved snappiness in its own right, but doing a restore as mentioned above will improve snappiness as well.
