sweet...one thing I think iPhone need is a "back to previous app" gesture/button this would help the work flow alot

Jun 30, 09 - 07:14 pm Comment from: GregoriusM

I love that idea.

Jun 30, 09 - 07:20 pm Comment from: geo

I give that idea a three-finger swipe to the left if you get my drift, Apple.

Apple today released iPhone OS 3.1 beta, which is a pre-release version of iPhone OS 3.1 beta.

Something's not quite right with that sentence.

a .1 update for "bug fixes and enhancements"? aren't bug fixes usually a .0.1 update?

Jun 30, 09 - 07:28 pm Comment from: Herr Chang

What?

The beta is a beta of the beta?

Did I miss something?

Jun 30, 09 - 07:32 pm Comment from: LateRegistrant

How much beta can it get?

Jun 30, 09 - 07:38 pm Comment from: UniqueVisitor

Somebody forgot to mention that this release was imminent.

Jun 30, 09 - 07:48 pm Comment from: Mac4lfe

This release is just to break tethering.

Jun 30, 09 - 07:52 pm Comment from: eMax

so this is just for developers right?

Jun 30, 09 - 07:55 pm Comment from: Peteyz

My 3GS feels snappier already!

These are the fixes that the iPhone needs:

1- In the "Photos" app, there should be a button that takes you to the camera directly, without having to exit out of the app or double clicking the home button to go to it. In other words--- Better photos and camera integration.

2- When your browsing apps at the app store and you download one, the App Store app closes and it takes you to the screen where the app is being downloaded to. This shouldn't be the case. One should be able to stay in the App Store, browsing it, WHILE the app downloads. It's such a hassle having to open the App Store after each download!

3- There should be more variety of sounds in the "Sounds" setting for new text messages. Being limited to six sounds is just...limited and annoying. Users should be able to create their own, much the same way ringtones are created.

4- Apps in the home screen should have the option to re-orient themselves depending how you are holding the phone. Turn the phone horizontally and the apps should rotate as well.

5- In Maps, the orientation should be respected when tapping the "locate me" button twice at the bottom left of the map. In other words, after the map changes orientation to take advantage of the compass, it should stay that way UNTIL you tap the "locate me" button AGAIN!

6- Oh yeah... And a very big annoyance--- Reorganizing apps should be easier. When moving an app to a new place in the screen, it should ONLY switch places with the app you're replacing it with and leave the rest of the apps in their place...unnafected.

Do you guys have any other suggestions? Do these things also bother you?

@LateRegistrant
"How much beta can it get?"

According to Sony, not much.

(For those of you who weren't born in the 80's, we had bought a Sony Betamax and were sad to see that the VHS won the battle. Another case of crap winning over quality. <sighs>)

"a .1 update for 'bug fixes and enhancements'? aren't bug fixes usually a .0.1 update?"

Good point. 3.0.1 I would understand--3.1 implies there's some new stuff in there.

Is this the stuff that Apple had to drop in order to get the iPhone 3GS out the door in June?

Jun 30, 09 - 08:50 pm Comment from: iBest

Guys

I read somewhere that the OS 3.0 has a flaw in that it allows the phone to be jailbroken. The iPhone-Dev team reckons that Apple will fix that flaw asap, and from then onwards, the iPhone will never be able to be jailbroken!

That said, before anyone upgrades to OS 3.x (3.0 is alright), they should use the USB DUMB method to extract that bit of information that will be required to jailbreak the phone in the future, irrespective of the OS version.

In my case, I don't need the jailbreak because all my Apps are legitimate, but sometimes, playing DivX and SSH into the phone are necessary and that can only be accomplished if the phone is jailbroken.

Jun 30, 09 - 08:58 pm Comment from: iPhone owner

Just don't jailbreak your iPhone, smarty pants.

I laugh at you guys jumping over hoops to break Apple's great design.

Jun 30, 09 - 09:13 pm Comment from: iBest

@ iPhone owner

I have all of the 3 models of the iPhone (2G, 3G, 3GS) here in Australia. Of course I had to jailbreak/unlock one of them. Otherwise, my sorry a$$ would have had to wait one whole year before it would be released on AU soil.

But I support the Apple design, and its integration. However, just a few things are missing, and instead of moaning about them, I try to find small but effective solutions to get around them. And it involves jailbreaking, then so be in. And I repeat, all my apps are legitimate, so, I'm not stealing anything from Apple/3rd parties.

Sal

Great list, agree on your list 100%

I'm sure I could add more if I thought about it.

Yeah here's one, Safari should have a "scroll to this spot" for long web pages. Scrolling long web pages in mobile Safari even 2 years into the iPhone on 3.0 is ass. They already have the model for how to fix it in their contacts app, use that.

Jun 30, 09 - 10:52 pm Comment from: Edward

I think that it is time to roll out for multitasking. Just like palm pre.

Jun 30, 09 - 11:06 pm Comment from: Hg Wells

To Sal's list, I'd add a back button. Some areas let you go back. For too many, you have to return Home to go first.

Jun 30, 09 - 11:21 pm Comment from: twilightmoon

@ Edward

Palm Pre "multitasking" is a horrible usability disaster. It drains the battery dry like a vampire, it's extremely poorly thought out, and this on a platform where the programs are basically glorified web pages. The iPhone is a real operating system with real aps, not just web pages.

Oh, and because you're apparently too stupid to already know, it already does multitask and did so on day 1, over 2 years ago. It's just turned off for 3rd party apps because with current mobile hardware that's an incredibly stupid idea.

Jun 30, 09 - 11:26 pm Comment from: TowerTone

To Sal's list I would add a shortcut on the main page that allows a preset power saver to be set up.

Hit that button to turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G, or any combo that you set it up to be.

db
Still got my Sony Beta Hi-Fi.
Hit the fast forward on a video, then hold the button down to get a glimpse of where you are in the process (rewind, too).
Gotta hook that thing back up again one day.

Many thanks to Brad at the Germantown store for making my purchase of a 32 GB black 3GS smooth and perfect, and to Brian for swapping my 1st gen iPhone out because of a defect under the glass, covered by Applecare. Thanks, Guys!

Fast for a 0.1 update.

Is Steve back kicking Azz?

"Why the heck doesn't this work like it's supposed too??"

(Just joking. Still, glad S. Jobs is back!) smile

Jun 30, 09 - 11:57 pm Comment from: TowerTone

ALSO....
for Sal's list, a way to lock the last page so you can let people use your phone, iPod, gamer, whatever, and have a secure page for certain programs.

Why?
I agree completely with the context and the tone of twilightmoon. Unless of course, edward was being facetious and/or sarcastic, which apparently some of us didn't pick up.

Also needed:

1. Missed call reminder
2. Ability to sort app icons on screens
3. Saved sets would be nice for the above
4. Private Browsing for Safari smile

Jul 01, 09 - 09:14 am Comment from: emanon

One thing I miss from my jailbroken iPhone is the status notifier in the menubar for missed calls, sms's, emails, etc. Would be great if Apple enabled this feature.

Jul 01, 09 - 10:33 am Comment from: Nathan

Sal-

1) An App Layout Screen in iTunes instead of the dumb checklist. The present system is so un-Apple, presenting very little information in an unattractive manner that unnecessarily difficult to use and distanced from the result. I agree with Rob that it would be great to be able to save "Applists" like "Playlists".

2) Improve Syncing between multiple machines, inlc PCs. My contact book syncs between my home iMac, iPhone, and work Dell, but they come out a mess. Conflicts aren't resolved or identified properly, contact ringtones are deleted, and I get duplicates. What's with the "This iPhone is synced to another user acct" message, anyway? Same iTunes user account on both machines...
Maybe that's Outlook '03's fault.

3) Bookmark sync selection. I would like to sync bookmarks between those two computers, but at present it's all or nothing. I don't wnat to sync >every< bookmark from my Mac over to my WORK PC.

Hey, maybe a developer can create a cooling app so you can use the phone in a location other than a heavily air conditioned room.

Jul 07, 09 - 02:42 pm Comment from: JasonS

Just so long as they fix the HUGE battery drain crippled wifi and overheating I've been suffering from since 3.0. The rest is just a bonus.
