Apple has released iTunes 7.7 and also launched the App Store in some countries. More countries are expected to come online shortly.
Use iTunes 7.7 to sync music, video, and more with iPhone 3G, and download applications from the iTunes Store exclusively designed for iPhone and iPod touch with software version 2.0 or later. Also use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home — a free download from the App Store.
iTunes 7.7 is available via Software Update (but, not, for some reason, via iTunes “Check for Updates.” Go figure).
iTunes 7.7 is also available via Apple’s website here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
so it begins!
I already “bought” some apps: myspace mobile and remote.
Can’t wait to use my iPhone/iPod Touch as remote. (killerapp!!!)

I think I may be the first person in the world to download an iPhone App….
That’s right, IT WORKS!!! ^_^
(In the UK at least
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />)
FYI, to browse the app store you need to go to Applications, then in the bottom right, Get More Applications…
Not entirely obvious right now, but I suspect that will change.
Dammit IKON!
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”tongue laugh” style=”border:0;” />
I was still pretty early though! Now I just need the 2.0 update…
@Richie_mofo: sorry, but you still might be the first to download the 2.0 update, but be quick.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
In related news, .Mac (mac.com) is down! Mobile Me?
@Apple Guy: me.com was up for some time, seems to be down again, at least in Belgium it is. I really hope Europe will get a speed update too, but I do not trust it will.
Sweeeeeeet.
I don’t have an option to download applications (USA Store) Where are you finding this?
Bought some apps already, now all we need is the 2.0 update.
@NOFX: macrumors.com has som direct links. Happy downloading!
Perhaps this is a dumb question but am wondering about the iTunes update. It says that it works exclusively with the 2.0 software. If that is the case, how will it work before the 2.0 software is available?
Im deployed out here to Africa – no update yet. Still shows 7.6 on the website, and ‘no updates’ via Software Update. Grrrr
Never mind, I just realized I had not read the entire explanation.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
What, no announcement about Apple’s own app, Remote, which remote controls iTunes/AppleTV…
I’m sure those weenies at Engadget will still rip on the AppleTV, but they are just a bunch of haters.
No, if only I had iPhone OS X 2.0, I could use it! Horse before the cart, it is…
Spain’s app store is on
KICK ASS… now if only .Ma…. err, MobileMe gets up and running, it’ll be perfect.
Good variety of apps, most are quite reasonably priced. A few seem rather costly. I suppose the developers of these latter ones expect them to be pirated sooner rather than later. What are you thoughts on pricing?
Portugal is working to
No, .mac just sucks. It’s probably down for this reason.
Let’s hope MobileMe doesn’t have the problems.
Until I realized I wasn’t the only one who could see/search/download apps but when checking for iPhone software update was told that my version 1.1.4 was current. WTF?
Ok, so you can buy apps, but you can’t use them. Strange. But I guess with the 24-hour globe and a huge international release, there are bound to be some oddities.
I am in the USA, FWIW.
On another note, I got the mobile me updater but now it’s offline. I guess there’s not a cloud in the sky this morning.
Uh… ok… So, I software updated, and got the latest version of iTunes. Yet, when I hook up my iPhone, and click ‘check for updates’, noting happens and it tells me im up to date. wtf.
Or, is Florida not part of The App Plan.
Just downloaded 7.7 – and the App store is not in the US version. Maybe tomorrow…?
In iTunes 7.7, just search for App Store. It’s there.
;-}
UK iTunes store, main sidebar at top of iTunes store window :
‘New Releases’ > App Store
US iTunes store, main sidebar at top of iTunes Store window : ‘New Releases’ > NO app store tab [?]
Am I missing something?
If anyone’s really desperate for 2.0…
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=515313
If it downloads as .zip, just take the .zip off the end and it will work
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
For the ones that can’t get to the App Store…
Go to Preferences – General
Check the Applications under Show:
It’ll then show up in your library.
Bottom right corner – click on Get More Application
You beat me to it Freddy
Got it. Thanks guys…!
However, it seems to appear in the main tabs of the UK site. Weird.
Anything else new in 7.7 besides the app store support, mobile me support, and the remote control support?
There is also a new Apple TV update 2.1 which allows the unit to be controlled by the iPhone with the new “remote” app.
I don’t see App Store on the iTunes Store home page.
Just to let you know, iTunes 7.7 is not available for Windows through the auto update service.
Thanks for the instructions guys. However, looks like its not available in the USA yet.
Clicked on the “Get More Applications” in the bottom right of the iTunes window and get “The iTunes Application Store is not currently available. Please try again later.”
Guess we’ll have to wait until tomorrow with the release of the new iPhone…
For me when I click on get more apps it says the application store is not available
Ok, I can download the apps, I just can’t load them onto the phone.
Matt, the update to the iPhone will be tomorrow. Patience, I know, I know. Let it begin! And on the 8th day!
Seems the apps store isn’t available in Canada yet!
@ Richie_mofo
Thanks.
FINALLY… it’s a direct link… not a iTunes thing… YET.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/10/iphone-firmware-2-0-is-live/
iPhone 2.0, bitches.
The App Store doesn’t yet show up in North America iTunes, but you can switch stores using the menu at the bottom of the page. Try New Zealand to see what the App Store looks like.
TO SEE LISTED APPS IN APP STORE IN iTUNES:
Search “applications”
Find App window, click “See More”
Bodaboom Kazow
Even though I don’t have an iPhone yet (T-minus 2 months), I downloaded 76 iPhone apps. Cool. I can’t wait.
Interesting that the iPhone apps have the .IPA extension.
@Richie_mofo…
to be safe I tried to install the new firmware on the iPod Touch and it failed. I guess I will have to wait for the official release…
Guys, the App Store is definitely available in the USA. I’ve been downloading stuff for quite a while. Of course, it’s a little frustrating downloading stuff that you can’t use until the iPhone 2.0 software becomes available. But taking the time to scan the 250 available applications is a little like Christmas morning.
direct download iPhone firmware here

I’m just now updating iTunes
Apps store works for me in Canada…
Wait for the bugs to get worked out first!!!
There are bound to be plenty.
It would be a serious problem if your iPhone gets bricked!!
WAIT!
What version of the firmware is that?
The app store didn’t show up for me either after updating to 7.7
Searched for “app store” in itunes and there it is…

A word on pricing.
First, I think this is a fascinating experiment in economics. I’m sure some enterprising student could write their thesis on app store pricing. Most of the developers had no idea what others were charging. Many got an idea of what they could charge during the WWDC when some of the apps were demoed and prices were announced.
This is mere speculation, but I believe prices will ultimately fall into 4 categories:
Free: Programs that promote a company’s other services, programs of limited utility and programs provided as a gift from altruistic programers.
.99-1.99: This price is so low that it will encourage impulse buys. I see a huge part of the market falling into this category. Further, I think that many people who would normally create their app for free may try the .99 cent model and be pleasantly surprised that they can make some money from it.
4.99-9.99: It appears clear to me that the big boys are trying to establish $9.99 as the standard price for their wares. I do believe that prices for premium products will ultimately standardize, but I don’t know whether it will be at 9.99 or 4.99. This will be interesting to watch.
19.99 and above: There will always be those rare programs that will float in the stratosphere selling for $40, $60 or perhaps even over $100. For an example of this, take a look at book prices on Amazon. While most books fall in the $20 range there are a few outliers that sell for much, much more. Right now I think a couple of the programs on the App store are overpriced and will have to eventually drop down into that $9.99-$4.99 range. However, for other programs it will be important to keep their prices high. Prices communicate value and premium vendors will want to continue to command premium prices.
Sorry here it is:

Ive downloaded loads of free apps from the UK store.
There seems to be problem with the paid apps though, every time I go to buy one it asks me to update my billing info event though my credit card is current.
Weird!
I am in Tucson Az and it is working for me. That’s a lot of Apps to start with. I love how Apple is really about taking their time with things. Work out all the known bugs, the work hard to fix the others fast. First Class organization that Apple is.
Have you guys been able to put the apps on your iPhone?
Because I can’t. I’ve downloaded like 15 apps but can’t put them on my iPhone.
FIIIINNNNAAAAALLLYYYY!!!!!!! GOT IT !!! 27 pages of apps in the U.S (think I’m a little late) this is most awesome!!!!!! however….I wish we could get some trial periods for the paid apps. I’d hate to be the guinea pig that forks over $10.00 to find out that an App just “Suckeths”. (or even fork over $4.99) however I will be purchasing iBEER!!!!
Downloaded the update but when trying to open Itunes it says “could not access Itunes store”
Super Monkey Ball’s been purchased almost 800 times already. I’m one of those and the graphics are amazing.
Is it just me or ist that thing SNAPPY??
You can’t transfer the App to your phone yet because you need iPhone 2.0 software. Expected out tomorrow. And I don’t believe the programs can be opened on your Mac so right now all you can do is download available programs and wait.
I know the Mac doesn’t have all of the features of the iPhone (GPS, accelerometeer, etc) but I guess I’m wondering why these Apps don’t work on the Mac too?
.mac is down:
This service is temporarily unavailable.
We are currently performing scheduled maintenance.
Normal service will be restored soon.
Had problems downloading 7.7 but realized I had it in a special Apps folder and finally got it working. No apps store in US.
Then downloaded 2.0 iPhone sw and installed without a problem (long time updating, though) and the apps store was available from there. Downloaded a few free apps.
Cool.
Is it me or is it SNAPPY?
Yes, just restarted iTunes and it was there.
iPhone 2.0 working fine on my 4gig!
@ Apple Genius…
I have been able to put the apps on my phone, and I’m playing with Remote and Where now.
Download the 2.0 firmware update listed in the thread above. (remmeber to hold down the option key when you click RESTORE in iTunes for your iPhone. Select the 2.0 iPhone titled “iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw”. If it has .zip at the end take it off.
Once iTunes has updated your iphone firmware through the resore process, you sync your applications through itunes just like music, contact, videos, etc… it’s in the itunes sync section under a tab called Applications.
FreddythePig said: “Just about the biggest day in Apple history and MDN has posted nothing new since 8:59 am??????????????”
Dude. They’re playing MonkeyBalls!!!!!
Grabbed the new 2.0 firmware, took about 20-25 mins in total to install. Have installed a few free apps so far, looks awesome!
And yes, it does seem snappier!
A genius said: “Have you guys been able to put the apps on your iPhone?
Because I can’t. I’ve downloaded like 15 apps but can’t put them on my iPhone.”
You have to do the 2.0 update first (manually). Mine loaded from the iPhone apps store w/o a problem!
My only complaint – more games!!!!
Has anyone purchased the Record (purchase, not free) prog yet? Does it record phone calls?!?!??! Need this badly!!!
@Macdaddy
It failed because there is no official way to PAY for the upgrade yet. In due time we’ll all be there…
I can’t wait for the reviews for all of the software that’s available.
How do I get the Apps to transfer to my iPod Touch. They don’t drag and drop. Are you downloading the iPhone 2 software from somewhere other than Apple?
Just found “Jared™ butcher of songs” in the Free Apps section.
Jared on the iPhone… I will sleep well knowing the Apple universe remains in balance.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smirk” style=”border:0;” />
The App store is up in the US.
There is no update for the iPod touch or officially for the iPhone here in the US as of yet.
You can download the apps-but they are not useable until the firmware updates go out.
Once the firmware update goes out, you download it and update your device-you will be able to install the apps.
The unofficial release of the 2.0 software is for iPhone only-does not work on the Touch.
Where the heck is IBM and a Lotus Notes client???????? Damn, their as inept as Intuit!!!!!!!!
Where the heck is Lotus Notes app????????
I think IBM is as inept as Intuit!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ Chaz, I agree with your sentiment, though not so much as to be repetitive… It would be nice if they had an iPhone client for Lotus, but they barely have a stable beta for OSX (8.5) that’s even starting to be worth a crap.. hell at my office we’re still on 6.5.
@MDN… what happened? did you guys decide to take the day off? I mean the most recent story is from 9 AM… are you telling me that there was NOTHING happening even remotely related to the Apple or it’s competitors for the entire rest of the day?
Strange that there’s no dictionary app. A reasonably priced one at least, the only thing I see is this one from “Ultraligua” but it’s $30. I’d rather just continue to use Safari than pay that.
And eReader really screwed up by leaving that menu bar when you go into landscape mode.
Wowie! Woo Hooo! This ties it ALL together the competition is over!
Remote = Killer app! used it already on iTunes (mac mini) and appleTV too!
I am truly blown away. Glad I got my APPL stock last week!
Wow
If FUBARS something in QuickTime, as my EyeTV SW has been adversely affected. Exports of HD video after the update have a popping sound- not good QC Apple.
I know what some are thinking- it’s not the Hardware. It’s what’s currently on sale- with plenty of quality memory.
