Thursday, November 20, 2008 - 09:45 PM EDT

Apple has released iTunes 8.0.2 which improves stability and performance and provides a number of important bug fixes, including:

• Addresses a quality issue creating MP3s on some computers.
• Fixes a connectivity issue with the iTunes Store when using some Internet proxies with Mac OS X.

iTunes 8.0.2 weighs in at 60.3 MB and is available via Software Update and also via the iTunes menu item "Check For Updates."

Whoopee.

I haven't upgraded to 8.0 yet.

Contrary to popular opinion, Macs can be used fro serious work.

Nov 20, 08 - 11:11 pm Comment from: Cubert

I was actually surprised at how responsive 8.0 was. With all the new features I expected sluggishness of 7.0 proportions.

iPhone/Touch 2.2 here we come...

Nov 20, 08 - 11:34 pm Comment from: Loru

I second that MeinLA, 2.2 has GOT to be imminent!!!

Nov 20, 08 - 11:50 pm Comment from: Sir Real B. Czar

Maybe it will unlock a hidden feature in the Apple TV 2.3 update.
nah......

Nov 21, 08 - 12:26 am Comment from: joyofme

same here: I figured with all the new features, 8.0 would be a lot slower than 7.x, but ha - WAY faster (in library-wide searches). A pleasant surprise. Of course none of this would matter if it wasn't for the fact that i'm still rockin a powerbook G4.

I'm glad this one does not require a restart. The updates have been coming so frequently, I'm having to restart my iMac MORE THAN ONCE A WEEK! Oh, the humanity...

No snappy comments yet!?!?

Doh, there's the first one.

Nov 21, 08 - 03:54 am Comment from: doc

The help files need updating.

Nov 21, 08 - 10:02 am Comment from: dewoz

iTunes 8.0.1 update caused error -3256 when attempting to connect to external speakers.
No success in rectifying the problem by installing iTunes 8.0.2
Tried suggestion of changing Configure iPv6 from Automatically to Off in System Preferences-Network-Airport Connected Advanced-TCP/IP.
Restarted iTunes and "just works" again!

System Preferences-Security-Firewall set to "Allow all incoming connections".

Nov 21, 08 - 10:34 am Comment from: Er

iTunes is definitely snappier, but my music plays at the same tempo as before.

Nov 21, 08 - 10:41 am Comment from: EvangelizeWithRespect

re: the track number in the file name issue, that ticked me off too. There's a terminal hack that'll fix the issue: "defaults write com.apple.iTunes create-filenames-with-tracknumber -bool FALSE"

This breaks Requiem!

Apple has been removing options in iTunes, I suppose in the pursuit of simplicity. One can no longer set the streaming buffer size to "load all" before playing, simply "large," which is about a fraction of full size for the 30 second previews.

Modem users and the options we need to use the software are being left behind, I suppose slow connections are becoming a small minority but broadband is not available where I live. Google does a much better job making their software more slow-connection friendly.

Strange. Someone erased my previous message that said that I had a system freeze (hard reboot needed) just trying to open the podcasts section of iTunes... Someone else?

Nov 21, 08 - 02:04 pm Comment from: tom

OK - perhaps this is a stupid question

Can you copy multiple file and folder to the library and have then stay intact?
I.e. - a folder with multiple folders containing mp3s.

Please don't laugh!!

Nov 21, 08 - 02:07 pm Comment from: tclash

I could not get Airtunes (or Airfoil) to work without frequent dropouts after upgrading to iTunes 8. I tried everything, and even spent an hour with a one-level-up Apple tech person. They would not admit any problem and blamed interference from other networks in my area. After downgrading to iTunes 7 everything is back to working flawlessly.

No thanks!

Nov 21, 08 - 02:16 pm Comment from: Me In LA

Looks like we was right Loru wink

Nov 21, 08 - 02:17 pm Comment from: Cubert

tom,
I'm not sure. I would try it with a folder with a small number of mp3's in it (like 5) and see. Then try dragging 2 folders with a few mp3's in each (different files) and test that. If both work, it's a go.

Good luck!

Actually, slow connections are not such a minority now that more and more people are tethering their laptops to cell phone networks, which work at only a fraction of the speed of wired broadband connections. The technology is getting fancier, but connection speed takes a nosedive when you opt for mobile access.

Since the upgrade I can't get ATV to show up under "devices". The ATV will play the movies I have on it OK, but no network functionality. I tried all the common troubleshooting (I have had an ATV since the day they came out), but it just wont show up! Any ideas out there???
