And does this break Pre syncing like so many predicted?

I wouldn't expect this update until iPhone 3.0 arrives. Interesting indeed. How long until some hacker discovers clues for WWDC deep inside the software?

@LordRobin

If not now, it sure will soon. Which is good.

Does it support DVD/Blu-Ray ripping like in that screen shot?

THE #1 problem I think they need to fix in iTunes is the lack of recourse if you accidentally delete a playlist.
There's no warning prompt, and no way to retrieve it, so you're just totally screwed if, for instance, you hit "delete" thinking that you're IN the window... but you're not.
This isn't something that ever occurred to me until it happened... twice in rapid succession. Only then did I realize what a big oversight thsi is because some playlists are important or take a lot of time to produce, yet they can be irretrievably lost with one keystroke.

@Nathan,

I wish there was an 'undo' feature in OS X that would work in any application, even third party stuff.

Jun 01, 09 - 05:17 pm Comment from: Mick James

@Nathan and @Sir Gill Bates,

There is.....its called Time Machine......

Here's a link:
http://dmlenton.wordpress.com/2007/11/29/leopard-time-machine-and-recovering-deleted-playlists-in-itunes/

Read how this guy used Time Machine to restore his deleted playlists.

Jun 01, 09 - 05:18 pm Comment from: Tom

Nathan,

if you have TimeMachine hooked up and you havent added alot of songs since the accidental delete you can go back into the iTunes directory and restore your itunes xml file. This should bring back your playlist.

Jun 01, 09 - 05:20 pm Comment from: Chris

I'll bet the Palm Pre no longer syncs with iTunes.

Jun 01, 09 - 05:27 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

@Mick James,

Thanks for the link. That's neat and I do use Time Machine, but it would be so much quicker and easier if we could simply use 'Edit > Undo' that is right up there in the iTunes menu bar. I would imagine these kind of things are very confusing for switchers. confused

What's a matter folks. No one has said if 8.2 is snappier!! Get with it please.

Jun 01, 09 - 05:45 pm Comment from: Ralph

I like it. iTunes is snappier now.

Used Software Update and downloaded iTunes 8.2 and the Quicktime update.

When I plugged in my iPod touch iTunes would not recognize the iPod.
Tried rebooting the iPod and iTunes would not recognize.
Rebooted my MBP and then it worked. All is good.

Every Mac user should be using Leopard and Time Machine. Then, all you need to do to retrieve a deleted playlist is to restore your iTunes library file (in your Music/iTunes/ folder) to immediately before you made the mistake.

An incidentally, the same method works with EVERY other file you might accidentally delete or update in a way that needs to be undone. It also works with emails (in Mail) and contacts (in Address Book).

Amazing, this article isn't even about the Palm Pre and some of you have managed to bring it up. Do you find it odd that there hasn't been a peep out of Apple regarding the Pre's ability to seamlessly sync with iTunes? I don't, reason being Apple will be violating the Antitrust Laws that prohibits anti-competitive behavior (monopoly) and unfair business practices. Antitrust laws are designed to encourage competition in the marketplace. Even If Apple wanted to block the Pre, I seriously doubt a code could be written in a couple of days and tested.

Whew ... glad they got this out

Although I really didn't need any improvements to accessibility

iTunes is still over there in the Dock and very handy

Did have a lot of broken-down old bugs that needed fixing

Thanks

Wrong.

Jun 01, 09 - 10:38 pm Comment from: eMax

They launched it just in time to have about a month to fix any major issues before iphone 3.0 is released...

Jun 02, 09 - 01:39 am Comment from: Ironman

Anyone else notice that they changed the date to 6/8/09 for the day that iTunes will automatically check for an iphone update. Coincidence?

Jun 02, 09 - 02:40 am Comment from: MediaXYZ

Why would preventing the Pre syncing with iTunes violate antitrust laws? Surely nothing is preventing Palm from producing their own media library management program (rather than strapping on to iTunes?). Apple doesn't prevent such behaviour, and if you don't want to use iTunes, then you are able to easily remove it from your computer (unlike, say, Internet Explorer).

Does that mean Sony is violating antitrust laws because my XBox 360 games won't run on a PS3? I'm sure they are just trying to stifle the market place...

Jun 02, 09 - 11:29 am Comment from: oneAwake

@MediaXYZ

It's simple, Apple had to open up iTunes to other 3rd parties, just like MS had to make some of it's software available to Apple. Apple did not have to provide the syncing software to those 3rd parties, the 3rd parties had to come up with the syncing software on their own. Palm has figured out a way to bypass 3rd party software by creating their own code. Here is what the Pre does when you plug it into a computer running iTunes, you get 3 options, media sync, mass storage, or charge. If you select media sync, the marriage happens right in the USB connection, bypassing any need for software. Your run of the mill MP3 player or other 3rd party device has to run through 3rd party software before it connects to iTunes. If Apple tries to block the Pre that will be violating the non-competing act. As to your XBox and PS3 analogy, ITunes is a software platform, not a gaming console.

Jun 02, 09 - 04:39 pm Comment from: Phil

It fixes the 5.1 issue that has been a problem - this is good news

Jun 02, 09 - 06:34 pm Comment from: oneAwake

Palm Pre still syncs with iTunes after the 8.2 update.

Jun 02, 09 - 07:25 pm Comment from: Jazrock

Unfortunately, my iPod Touch is still a brick.
