Apple today released Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 1 which adds Java SE 6 version 1.6.0_05 to your Mac.

This release does not change the default version of Java.

This release is only for Mac OS X v10.5.2 and later, and should not be installed on earlier versions of Mac OS X.

This release is for 64-bit Intel-based Macs only and cannot run on PowerPC-based or 32-bit Intel-based Macs.

64 bit only? Why?

"This release does not change the default version of Java" ??
It installs itself but doesn't replace the previous version??

Apr 29, 08 - 10:55 pm Comment from: Cubert

Uhhhhh.......What?

Apr 30, 08 - 01:23 am Comment from: Boyarsky

Ummm I find it interesting it is Intel only.

Is this the start of the end for PPC Support from Apple? My G5 works great and handles everything I throw at it..

They've gotta keep updating things in the PPC end of OS X..

Makes me wonder...

Good, helpful advice there Reality Check - thanks.

"They've gotta keep updating things in the PPC end of OS X.."

Did Steve Jobs, in the keynote where he talked about the switch to Intel, say anything on how long they were planning on supporting the PPC platform? You oughta find that keynote.

I just broke my neck and set fire rushing to download an update yet again to the unused ball and chain.

Apr 30, 08 - 09:51 am Comment from: Steve

The update is for Intel Core2Duo's only. Not Power PC's, and not Intel Core Duo's. The default is still Java 5, but will run Java 6. I've read a report saying Safari presently doesn't support Java 6 (because it's 32-bit).

Apr 30, 08 - 10:44 am Comment from: Ampar

"I've read a report saying Safari presently doesn't support Java 6 (because it's 32-bit)."

There's a warning note in Leopard's Java Preferences utility. If you select Java 6 in Java Preferences (after installing), a note next to the selection tells you that apps in Safari will default back to Java 5 because it is only 32-bit compatible.
