Update DOES fix Keynote import of complicated Powerpoint presentations!
Files that use to crash Keynote during import now load just fine.

What's a Quark?

Jun 27, 06 - 05:29 pm Comment from: rasterbator

I came in the office yesterday after a one week vacation, and my machine will not start up. All I get is gray screen. No Apple logo. No spinner. Anyone got a fix for that? 'Cause I can't download a damn thing at this point.

DiskWarrior. No Joy.
TechTools. No Joy.

Crap.

Yesss, iSync finally talks to my PEBL!!!

Jun 27, 06 - 05:36 pm Comment from: @ rasterbator

have you tried booting from the system cd and run disk utility, etc?

Jun 27, 06 - 05:40 pm Comment from: Macfanboy #12

raterbator - hard to believe an Apple computer would do that to you. but then it is your fault, not apple´s. quit complaining.

Jun 27, 06 - 05:42 pm Comment from: Neat & Tidy

Finally OSX ensures icons are spaced correctly when viewed on desktop. That soooooooo pissed me off.

Downloaded the 64MB combo updater - 7 minutes
Installed the update - 37 seconds
The first reboot - 2.5 mins

That was painless.

Now... to test the changes in Safari, if any I can see.

Jun 27, 06 - 05:51 pm Comment from: Spark

Jeez, MacFanBoy#12, sounds like Rasterbator was making a cry for help, not a complaint against Apple.

Jun 27, 06 - 05:52 pm Comment from: Wingsy

Safari's java speed test was around 4.5 secs under 10.4.6, now it's 4.07 under 10.4.7 and Safari 2.0.4.

Apple musta tweaked something under the hood.

This fixed a problem I had with my Verizon wireless EVDO card (PC 5220). Whenever I used it after having my PowerBook (Al 15") connected to my 23" Cinema Display, the whole computer would freeze whenever the card was turned off or whenever the computer attempted to sleep.

Jun 27, 06 - 05:56 pm Comment from: Busta

Rasterbator,

That only happens to me when i boot up with a cd in the drive that the puta doesnt like, usually one made by microsoft!!

Try holding down the mouse button to eject anything in the drive that it doesnt like.

Rasterbator...

It sounds like a bad ram chip to me. I had this happen on two different macs of mine over the years. If you have more than one ram chip in each, start by taking one out and rebooting, then the other ect.

I even had a ram slot on my old G4 350 go out on the mother board, when I finally figured it out I just ran with three slots of 256 instead of 4.

Hope this helps.

Jun 27, 06 - 06:04 pm Comment from: kyotosugar

After installing the update, synching my address book to the Sony-Ericsson K700i is working great again. Thanks Apple, you made my Tuesday. This has been my main peeve with Tiger.

Jun 27, 06 - 06:05 pm Comment from: OpJ

Anyone know if this does anything about Macbooks freezing for a couple of minutes at a time, and suddenly going into kernel-panic type fanblasting status while supposedly sleeping? (Put my Macbook to sleep and in my bag on the train this morning, when I took it out of the bag the fan was going full blast and the machine felt like a burning piece of charcoal.)

Jun 27, 06 - 06:08 pm Comment from: badcock

rasterbator, if you have 2 macs you could try starting up the bad mac in firewire target mode (hold down the t) - at least you might be able to access your files.

Jun 27, 06 - 06:21 pm Comment from: Jon

Rasterbator,

As Jim said above it sounds as if it may be a RAM problem, you may also try resetting your PRAM for in fo on how http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238" ]to do this can be found here[/url]

Running FSCK, would also be a good idea, this can clear up a lot of startup related problems, to do this can be found here. (FSCK is simmiler to running DiskUtility without actually starting OS X )

to do this can be found here
Let us know how you get on,
Regards.

Jun 27, 06 - 06:35 pm Comment from: Mike

If your computer is five years old or older, check the battery. I had a similar problem on a G4 tower, and putting in a new battery seemed to clear it up. On the other hand, some people say taking out the battery for a few hours can fix things, too (without replacing the battery, which, in my case, tested fine).

Jun 27, 06 - 06:36 pm Comment from: Darren

on the mac pro 15" the double-click (two fingers on the track pad) has been added, previously only macbooks and macbook pro 17" had this functionality. To enable go into system preferences mouse and keyboard

Seems zippier in Safari - probably just my imagination.

Motorola v195 still not supported by iSync

Jun 27, 06 - 07:08 pm Comment from: coolfactor

Static Mesh,

That vulnerability seems fixed. This wasn't a security update, though, but maybe it came with some security fixes.

On another note, scrolling in Safari is less smooth, and I just doubled my RAM today to 1GB. Has anyone noticed scrolling-related issues in 10.4.7? The "Smooth Scrolling" option in Appearance preference pane doesn't help.

My machine is slow, though... 400MHz PowerMac G4, but scrolling was smoother before 10.4.7. Weird.

No other issues. All is well.

Jun 27, 06 - 07:22 pm Comment from: Sniper Mac

This updated messed with my clock. Now it can't display the two dots between the numbers. Damn!

Does this happened to anyone else?

Waiting for a fix...

Jun 27, 06 - 07:26 pm Comment from: Bob

I'm only downloading it, but my computer already feels *snappier*!

Jun 27, 06 - 07:44 pm Comment from: zooming

safari seems snappier. joy grin

Jun 27, 06 - 08:28 pm Comment from: MikeR

coolfactor,

I have a G4 400 also. I stayed at 10.3.9. No problems at all. The 400 mhz isn't fast enough for 10.4.

Or reset the Power Manger and you only have to wait a few seconds!

The battery is a good guess. RAM failures usually (but not always) produce an error message on the screen on a power-up.

BTW, reseting PRAM, as someone else suggested is mostly just Voodoo.

Jun 27, 06 - 09:42 pm Comment from: ben

I got my first "crash screen" after this update on my macbook pro.. it happened when i tried to open photoshop.. everything seems fine now.

Jun 27, 06 - 10:06 pm Comment from: matt

i've also noticed safari seems a bit faster, even on my old 900mhz ibook.

the afp deadlock thing wasn't what i was hoping for, though. =( ah well.

Now the Cisco VPN client doesn't work on my MacBook Pro !!!!

Has anyone else experienced this?

Jun 27, 06 - 10:11 pm Comment from: Static Mesh

META FILE EXPLOIT NOT FIXED

Lock Terminal in a folder with no access.

Install Safe Terminal.

FSCKING THANKS APPLE. :(

Jun 27, 06 - 10:12 pm Comment from: Mac7

OpJ,

What probably happened is that you MacBook didn't actually go to sleep when you put it into your bag, then it got really hot, because some process kept going that made it really hot and in the bag it had no venting.

This happened to me once.

Jun 27, 06 - 10:22 pm Comment from: Static Mesh

All you folks happy that Mac OS X feel's "snappier" it's just a simple pre-binding rebuild that occurs after every OS update. You just haven't done one for some time yourself that's all.

You can invoke a pre-binding update yourself, search Apple for OnyX and run all the "Automation" and reboot.

Tada, your snappy again.

Jun 27, 06 - 10:25 pm Comment from: BuriedCaesar

Well, Ampar, SJ is going to preview Leopard at WWDC in August, so I guess that means she's, um, well, starting to show... wink

"Tada, your snappy again."

You leave my snappy out of this.
Besides, I heard that Static Mesh had a 2 Thz grid running that would shame SkyNet. Delusional AI nets count!

Jun 27, 06 - 10:55 pm Comment from: Niff Stipples

Update was no problem on my G3 800 MHz iBook w/640 MB of RAM -- can't say I notice any difference, one way or another.

Niffy

Jun 28, 06 - 12:55 am Comment from: John

Ug, still no joy synching my Treo 650 with my computer via bluetooth. I still get the same "port in use by another application" error message.

What gives with that?!

Jun 28, 06 - 01:19 am Comment from: left mac nut

Update wrecked my mirror-door dual 1.25. Would log in for a second, then log out by itself. No fix. Archived and installed, back to good old 10.4.0. First update I have ever had problems with.... Don't do it!!!!!
