Apple releases Mac OS X 10.5.4
Monday, June 30, 2008 - 04:36 PM EST

Apple today released Mac OS X 10.5.4 Leopard which is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac.

What's included:
• General
- Includes recent Apple security updates.
- Resolves an issue with saving and reopening Adobe Creative Suite 3 files on a remote server.
- Includes additional RAW image support for several cameras.
- Addresses an issue that may result in a partially installed X11 application.
- Improves L2TP VPN client reliability.

• AirPort
- Addresses AirPort reliability issues with 5GHz networks.
- Addresses AirPort issues that may result in slower performance in Logic Studio or MainStage.

• iCal
- Improves overall iCal reliability for meeting requests, cancellation notices, delegation, and syncing with iPhone.
- Resolves an issue that prevents deleting an iCal event without notifying the creator.
- Addresses an issue in which events in all calendars affect availability. A checkbox now enables information-only calendars to be transparent from free/busy lookups.
- Resolves a UI issue preventing delegated calendars from showing up as a separate window.
- Addresses an issue with copying and pasting attendees from one event to another.
- Resolves an issue in which iCal may not delete events after a specified time interval, even when set to do so in iCal preferences.
- Addresses an issue in which To Dos cannot be marked private.

• Safari
- Addresses a potential performance issue when loading secure web pages.
- Resolves issues that may be encountered when accessing secure web pages with client certificates that reside on a smart card.

• Spaces and Exposé
- Addresses an issue in which switching from a space with a Finder window keeps the Finder as the active application instead of the application residing in the destination space.
- Fixes an issue in which dragging an application from the list of application assignments in Spaces System Preferences does not assign the application to the desired space.
- Resolves an Exposé issue that may result in only a subset of windows being shown.

Mac OS X 10.5.4 Leopard is available via Software Update.

Standalone installers are or will soon be available via Apple Support Downloads.

• The delta update will allow you update from Mac OS X 10.5.3 to 10.5.4
• The combo update will allow you update from Mac OS X 10.5, 10.5.1, 10.5.2, or 10.5.3 to 10.5.4

Jun 30, 08 - 03:53 pm Comment from: Journo

Once again, MDN beats everyone to the news.

MacDailyNews. Where "Where Mac News Comes First" isn't just a catchy slogan.

Jun 30, 08 - 03:57 pm Comment from: sly

By the way, a MacBook and an iMac updated, so far so snappy.

Jun 30, 08 - 03:58 pm Comment from: DANichols

Wrong, MacRumors posted it about 15 Min Before MDN did !

Jun 30, 08 - 03:59 pm Comment from: JAYGEE

I'm scared of updating big updates like this, as they can go wrong.

I always wait a few days, to see if it goes wrong, for some people.

Jun 30, 08 - 04:00 pm Comment from: Chaz Mangus

Working Great.!@@!

Jun 30, 08 - 04:04 pm Comment from: oh no my shorts

@JAYGEE

> I'm scared of updating big updates like this, as they can go wrong. I always wait a few days, to see if it goes wrong, for some people.

The updates can tell when you do this and they don't like it.

Sometimes they'll work just fine for everyone else because they're trying to lull you into a false sense of security. Then, once they've got you trusting that everything is okay, you install them, and BAM! Everything goes to hell.

Oh.. no, wait a minute, that's Microsoft.

Jun 30, 08 - 04:07 pm Comment from: iWill

Its snap-tastic!

Jun 30, 08 - 04:11 pm Comment from: the only thing that's snappin

is your mom's cooch ya fucking retarded snappy dipshits.

Jun 30, 08 - 04:11 pm Comment from: Bruno

Mmmmm, taste that Apple goodness. You see, when Apple bakes a pie, it's just right, with sugar on top, delicious pastry, and a proper filling. With Microsoft, you get a weird transparent plastic pastry, which for some reason is not transparent, but actually blurred and clouded. I assume thats to hide the out of date, rotten innards of the pie. The Microsoft pie is also huge, and bursting at the seams. The Apple pie is always a trim size, just large enough to carry everything you need, but small enough to fit inside the tiniest of ovens.

And, that was a good one, Oh no my shorts. I LOLed. smile

MDN Magic word: a controversial "free". Our updates are free, Microsoft's Service Packs are sometimes a little bit more? Debate please? Any Microsoft fanboys ready to rally against me and defend Bill and Ballmer? Please, take a shot. I'm sure I'll get a good laugh out of it.

Jun 30, 08 - 04:11 pm Comment from: Dustin Dauncey

Firstly, yes, MacRumors did have this announcement first.

Secondly, I have updated (smoothly) and I still don't see any MobileMe service logos or anything, so I guess there might be one last update before the set release date...? I only mention this because it seemed to be widely reported this 10.5.4 update would activate the hidden code for MobileMe. Oh well.

Jun 30, 08 - 04:26 pm Comment from: ron

There's a guy on Version Tracker writing about OSX upgrades and how rotten is the Apple core. He should regress to windows and then he could really bitch.

Jun 30, 08 - 04:29 pm Comment from: Sarasota

Don't yet see the 10.5.4 Combo Updater on the Apple D/L page as of 1539 MDT.

Jun 30, 08 - 04:32 pm Comment from: hangs?

Any shutdown hangs like were reported with 10.5.3? I haven't even installed 10.5.3 because of said hangs and because of Firefox incompatibilities. I guess I'll wait a few days again and see what happens.

MW: I'll wait to see how "others" do with this update.

Jun 30, 08 - 04:32 pm Comment from: EFI Firmware Update 1.3

Has anyone else had any issues with the EFI Firmware update 1.3??

it was release on April 8th, and i've had issues with it (or System Updater) ever since. It constantly says that I need to install the update even though i've done so 3 times.

Jun 30, 08 - 04:35 pm Comment from: coolfactor

Yay! Fixes Safari's issue with loading some secure sites. I can finally access my bank's site again. I was insistently blaming this on my bank for 2 weeks. grin

Jun 30, 08 - 04:49 pm Comment from: gypsie

Does it solve the Photoshop 7.0 issues?

Jun 30, 08 - 04:49 pm Comment from: Jim - TIV

And it's not even Tuesday...

Jun 30, 08 - 04:52 pm Comment from: Jamie

CS3 issue has been fixed... I guess we can go back to bitching about the ridiculous price Adobe charge for CS3.3.

Jun 30, 08 - 04:58 pm Comment from: Brain Fart

God do Adobe charge crazy prices for CS 3. Over here in the UK we have to pay double what you folks in the US do. I say have to, instead of updating to the Master suite like I originally planned, I just got Illustrator and picked up the Apple equivalent when it comes to video production. Good times.

Jun 30, 08 - 05:10 pm Comment from: Jim - TIV

No problems yet on the core 2 imac. The PBG4 12" booted twice but seems to be running fine.

Jun 30, 08 - 05:12 pm Comment from: Snow Job Leopard

"is it snappy????"

Does it have No New Features? It could be Snow Job Leopard in disguise.

Jun 30, 08 - 05:14 pm Comment from: McIntosh

Why do people keep on using the word "snappy" in reference to OS updates?? Where did that ever come from?

Jun 30, 08 - 05:16 pm Comment from: Leopard Pie

"The Apple pie is always a trim size, just large enough to carry everything you need, but small enough to fit inside the tiniest of ovens. "

Except when it's a Leopard Pie. Then it's so bloated and full of rotten leopard meat that it takes a whole year to bake a replacement pie.

Jun 30, 08 - 05:20 pm Comment from: SMacSteve

The "snappy" thing came from back when OS X 10.0 came out and was pretty slow and Apple released the update 10.1... It was a huge improvement in overall speed and it was often referred to as "snappy" Then whenever a new update came out like 10.1.1, 10.1.2 and so on it seemed some updates would be a step forward and some were a step backwards. It became commonplace to ask on forums if the newest update fixed any sluggish issues and if it made it "snappier"!

So there you have it the history of "snappy" in reference to OS X!

Jun 30, 08 - 05:30 pm Comment from: standardmess

@ EFI Firmware Update 1.3

I don't have an EFI-based Mac with me at the moment with which to verify this, but I know firmware updates in the past have often required that you run a special app that gets dropped in your Utilities folder before the update actually completes. Have you done that? If not, that might be why it still wants to download the updater.

Jun 30, 08 - 05:32 pm Comment from: Frank

Finally 10.5.4 fixes "What's New" wink

Jun 30, 08 - 05:54 pm Comment from: Wade

There's also a Safari update and a security update for 10.4 added today.

Jun 30, 08 - 06:02 pm Comment from: IT guy

@Journo,

Unfortunately, MDN was not the first. I saw this news on Macrumors first and no one else had it at the same time. Macrumors beat them by 11 minutes! smile

Jun 30, 08 - 06:12 pm Comment from: Thorin

FYI, I'm still running Tiger, and there are updates for it today as well.

Jun 30, 08 - 06:21 pm Comment from: McIntosh

@ SMacSteve--

Thanks for the background on that! I had no idea this little tradition goes back like 6 or 7 years. Fairly new to Macs, so I know my inexperience shows now...

Jun 30, 08 - 06:30 pm Comment from: Jeff

Ughh.....did the update and upon restart my G5 hung up, which it hasn't done in FOREVER!!

Now every single app is running like its stuck in quick sand....working thru all of the basic troubleshooting right now...

Anyone else having issues with powerpc machines? I just got an IM from a friend with very similiar issues as mine....safari is taking a looooooooong time to load every page, and every one of my CS3 apps is coated in syrup....

Jun 30, 08 - 06:48 pm Comment from: studentrights

Wow, it feels 2-3 times faster and it talks to me now...

"Buy... iPod", "buy... iPhone", "Buy Mobile Me", but I already own them. I hope this bug is fixed in 10.5.5

Jun 30, 08 - 06:56 pm Comment from: Woody

But, but, where's the server update? OMGWTFBB!!!11!! I want my Xserve to be snappy too!

Jun 30, 08 - 07:02 pm Comment from: TRON

Unfortunately, I still can't access sites that require certificates from my Smart Card! WTF!?! The update was supposed to fix this! Is anybody doing this successfully after the update?

Jun 30, 08 - 07:24 pm Comment from: alansky

Some readers report that the OS X 10.5.4 update makes your computer snappier just by hearing about it. No installation required! Now that's what I call "snappy!"

Jun 30, 08 - 07:28 pm Comment from: ping

PowerMac G5 Dual 2GHz (1st generation) here — no problems updating so far.

Snappy enough right now. wink

Jun 30, 08 - 08:11 pm Comment from: Snow Job Leopard

"Ughh.....did the update and upon restart my G5 hung up, which it hasn't done in FOREVER!!"

So Apple didn't even wait for Snow Job leopard to stop testing on the G5

Jun 30, 08 - 08:16 pm Comment from: KenC

MB updated just fine. AluPB is hung right now at the Running Installer Script step! Aargh!

Jun 30, 08 - 08:48 pm Comment from: ping

My PowerMac G5 updated just fine (right now typing on it).

Jun 30, 08 - 08:59 pm Comment from: Wha

I hope it's snappy, but not crackly and poppy.

Jun 30, 08 - 10:25 pm Comment from: Willie G

@ 'Snow Job Leopard'

Installed on my G5 Quad with no issues. Don't be such a conspiracy-theory wielding crybaby... Next tim ask around before you jump to the asinine conclusion that your one machine somehow is representative of every G5 out there.

I'm still waiting for Pussy to be released.

Jun 30, 08 - 11:38 pm Comment from: iDid
