Apple releases Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.1 Update
Thursday, November 15, 2007 - 01:55 PM EST

Apple today released Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.1 Update and Mac OS X Server 10.5.1 Update which both include general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac.

Important: Read before installing
• You may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications installed, or if you've modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
• The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Support Downloads to update.
• It is recommended that you backup your system prior to installing any updates.
• If issues occur during installation--for example, Software Update quits unexpectedly--please see this article.

The following improvements for both PowerPC and Intel-based Macs are included in Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.1 Update:

AirPort
• Allows password-protected accounts on AirPort Disks to show up on in the Finder's Shared Sidebar.
• Resolves an issue with saved passwords for wireless networks.

Back to My Mac
• Improves the reliability of Back to My Mac-enabled Macs appearing in the Finder's Shared Sidebar.
• Improves compatibility with D-Link NAT gateways.

Disk utilities
• Restores the functionality of the progress bar during permission repairs in Disk Utility.
• Addresses an issue that could produce an alert when creating disk images using Disk Utility or Terminal.
• Improves disk partitioning when multiple RAID sets are created on the same disk.

iCal
• iCal alarms are now more reliably delivered via email.
• Resolves an issue when inviting attendees via a CalDAV account.

Mail
• Improves stability when resizing columns in the message viewer or switching between Stationery templates in email messages.
• Addresses an issue in which attachments enclosed inside an HTML link may not be clickable in email messages.
• Fixes an issue with email accounts added using the "Simple Setup" feature in which messages cannot be sent due to an SMTP connection failure.
• Improves Smart Mailboxes compatibility with .Mac Sync, and addresses an issue with To Do's disappearing when using Smart Mailboxes.
• Resolves an issue with syncing Mail accounts with .Mac in which multiple On My Mac folders appear in the Mailbox pane.

Networking
• Addresses an issue in which Microsoft Windows shared folders may be read-only when connected via SMB.

Printing
• Resolves an issue in which user-selected values on Paper Feed PDE are reset to default while saving a custom preset.

Security, Firewall
• Addresses a code signing issue; third-party applications can now run when included in the Application Firewall or when whitelisted in Parental Controls.
• In Security preferences' Firewall tab, the "Block All" option is now called "Allow Only essential services"
• Includes recent Apple security updates.

System and Finder
• Addresses a potential data loss issue when moving files across partitions in the Finder.
• Resolves an issue with login after turning off FileVault for a specific user account.
• Improves compatibility with Adobe Flash-based uploaders used by .Mac Web Gallery and certain other websites and applications.
• Resolves a potential text drawing issue with certain Adobe Flash-based websites and applications.

Time Machine
• Addresses formatting issues with certain drives used with Time Machine (specifically, single-partition MBR drives greater than 512 GB in size as well as NTFS drives of any size and partition scheme).
• Resolves an issue in which files restored in Time Machine may be restored to the backup hierarchy rather than the folders to which they belong.

Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.1 Update and Mac OS X Server 10.5.1 Update are available via Software Update and also as a standalone installers.

So far, so good. No issues with 10.5.1. I hope that it continues to work well, and solved some of the strange issues that I was having.

Did anyone else notice a faster system when loaded on a Dell XPS running windows vista?

Nov 15, 07 - 02:19 pm Comment from: Macromancer

Anyone have issues with Front Row crapping out when showing movies on a TV? Before the update I mean, not after.

Nov 15, 07 - 02:25 pm Comment from: Luke Skywalker

Please God, er, uh, I mean, Steve, let my networking problems disappear!

Nov 15, 07 - 02:25 pm Comment from: Matthew

Yep. Thats just what the doctor ordered. I was wondering if Apple was going to ignore this "slow down problem". Guess they didn't!

Nov 15, 07 - 02:29 pm Comment from: Matthew

Did not fix the .Mac sync issues though!!! URGGGGGGG

Nov 15, 07 - 02:29 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

LET'S HEAR IT FOR MDN REGISTRATION!!!

WOOT WOOT!!!

My comments are teh snappy!

Nov 15, 07 - 02:29 pm Comment from: AL

@Macromancer

I have the same problem. Watching anything longer than a few minutes will cause Front Row to hang.

Nov 15, 07 - 02:31 pm Comment from: help me please

Damn it, I just wanted the 10.4.11 update, thats all. Then everything went wrong. Upon reboot I got the login screen, logged in, then a black screen with some of my cable info. No login available. So I looked for my Tiger disc, no where. Now I am running internet explorer to type this because safari 3 isn't supported in panther......help me please, how can I revert back to safari 2?

Nov 15, 07 - 02:39 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Are there separate Intel and PPC installers?

Now if only we could get developers to make their wares Leopard compatible...

Ya HEAR me Adobe? What about Acrobat Pro 8?

Nov 15, 07 - 02:39 pm Comment from: @help me please

Dude, you are in the wrong place for that kind of help. This is a news forum, not a Help Me Please forum

Nov 15, 07 - 02:40 pm Comment from: MadMac

Repairing permissions now throws about 8 errors with SUID files being modified and cannot be repaired. After installing Leopard, I had 1. What gives?

Nov 15, 07 - 02:40 pm Comment from: Matthew

Dud this has nothing to do with the 10.4.11 update. Go to Apple discussions.

Nov 15, 07 - 02:48 pm Comment from: AshNazg

I hope this fixes the friggin' problem with Photoshop CS3 not showing the values correctly in the little boxes in the program... very annoying.

Nov 15, 07 - 02:50 pm Comment from: @AL

that's been a problem in OS X since the beta at WWDC07.

Nov 15, 07 - 02:51 pm Comment from: G4Dualie

Finally, registration! Please add Preview and Edit and I'd be all set.

Oh, and can you also get rid of that annoying mermaid and the Apple Store advertisement I could make better use of the Feedback box. At least move them into the far-right hand column.

I know that's asking a lot but, take your time. I packed a lunch.

Nov 15, 07 - 02:56 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

EDIT would be nice, but this is a good start. But a little part of me will miss The Spoof Wars.

Nov 15, 07 - 02:58 pm Comment from: Rob

My wife is happier after update!

Keep 'em coming.

Nov 15, 07 - 02:58 pm Comment from: Edgy

I can't wait to download this to see if my Mac gets snappier (I'm sure it already has).

Nov 15, 07 - 02:59 pm Comment from: Dude

Yes, but is it snappier (TM) ????

Nov 15, 07 - 03:00 pm Comment from: Ampar

Thank you, MDN for registrations.

And nice work, Apple for a reasonably quick update.

Nov 15, 07 - 03:01 pm Comment from: DWJ

Rob: your wife is snappier now!

Nov 15, 07 - 03:03 pm Comment from: @G4Dualie

Just make the feedback box bigger by dragging the lower right corner - that is if you are really running a mac with Safari 3.0

Nov 15, 07 - 03:04 pm Comment from: DWJ

Just kiddin' 'round, Rob!

Nov 15, 07 - 03:07 pm Comment from: Brau

Sadly, no mention of addressing the inability of Time Machine to recognize an Airport disk for backups as they had advertised. Still waiting for Apple to make good on that promise as I bought a new Extreme for that very feature.

Nov 15, 07 - 03:07 pm Comment from: Andy

If this keeps up, we'll be seeing OS X 10.6 in no time at all!

Nov 15, 07 - 03:07 pm Comment from: Bill

Finally the keyboard on my MBP works without freezing up every two minutes!

Nov 15, 07 - 03:12 pm Comment from: @help me please

do what? why are you downloading 10.4.11 and then complaining about Safari 3 not running on Panther? trolling?

Nov 15, 07 - 03:13 pm Comment from: Grigori

Registration... wow... I feel so legitimized... and snappier!

Nov 15, 07 - 03:15 pm Comment from: G4Dualie

@@G4Dualie

I am using that feature so perhaps I am the only one who is experiencing a problem here.

When I resize the Feedback box by dragging the lower-right hand corner to the right, past the Disney ad, the ad itself becomes part of the Feedback box and as I drag the box downward, the Disney ad follows.

The Feedback box is still functional so no big whoop.

Nov 15, 07 - 03:15 pm Comment from: Shinobi

It appears apple fixed a lot of stuff in this update, but most of that stuff I did not have a problem with or at least did not notice it.

I have leopard installed on a Mac mini and my MacBook Pro.

Even after the update, I am still having trouble with widgets and parental controls. Although I am not using Parental Controls on my account, it still will not let me install or use new widgets.

Also safari with Gmail does not work correctly either when composing new messages.

Other than that, leopard rocks! Keep the updates coming Apple.

Nov 15, 07 - 03:18 pm Comment from: YoYo

I just bought a new iMac 24" but no Leopard WTF!! But hey, they threw in Microsoft Vista Home Basic (Chinese version) for free. Am I a happy camper or what, NOT! I guess I need to make a new trip to the store or just wait for the MacPro Penryn to arrive, that has Leopard for sure.

Has anybody tried if Logic Pro works with Leopard?

Nov 15, 07 - 03:20 pm Comment from: Simply Amazing

Apple has done tremendous work here.

With all the recent updates, 10.4.11 just yesterday and today 10.5.1.

THIS IS WHY... Microsoft is the biggest piece of shitzen software company next to Adobe. Maybe I should say lazy fat arses.

Apple can not be beat.

Troll on... I can't hear you!!!!

I too busy actually getting work done on my mac...
making money with my purchase rather then playin' games or tweekin my system everyday cos it isn't compatible with some driver.

Yeah... I used Windows... for three years...
but I have also used a Mac for twenty.

I never will go back.

Brendon

Nov 15, 07 - 03:22 pm Comment from: Macromancer

@ Al

Are you using an external drive for your Front Row assets?

Nov 15, 07 - 03:24 pm Comment from: look a==hole

The reason I am running panther is because that is my original mac os with this iMac G5. My wife and I bought Tiger when it came out and I can't find our disk. So we installed our original system software. If you can't help fine. Just quick being a fu-knut about it.

Nov 15, 07 - 03:28 pm Comment from: 84 Mac Guy

Let's see, 20 days for the first major bug fix for Leopard. Exactly when is Vista's SP1 coming out? 20 days after Vista's release? 20 weeks? Maybe 20 months.

I guess it just takes longer to fix an old Edsel than a new BMW.

Nov 15, 07 - 03:28 pm Comment from: Connor MacBook

Was hoping it would enable network shared drives to be used with Time Machine. Oh well, maybe in 10.4.2 ...

Nov 15, 07 - 03:29 pm Comment from: Connor MacBook

10.5.2 even!

Nov 15, 07 - 03:29 pm Comment from: Andy

Perhaps Apple should create a 'supercomputer for the rest of us' (think a Cray) and call it the 'Thundercat Pro'.

Nov 15, 07 - 03:33 pm Comment from: sn

Sorry to hear that. Go to http://www.apple.com and click on "Support". There are discussion forums there that can help you better than this site.

Nov 15, 07 - 03:34 pm Comment from: whatever

With this update I can now print from Illustrator CS3 to my Epson rip with out any errors. I could. Not print to them at all before.

Nov 15, 07 - 03:39 pm Comment from: Toasty!

I lost all the computers in "network" and "shared" that are not Macs after the update and I can't get them back. I saw this same problem pre 10.5.1 on a few macs. Now its all of them. Anyone else have this issue?

Nov 15, 07 - 03:42 pm Comment from: manvan

I loaded 10.5.1 and got the beach ball for over an hour during the reboot. I eventually did a hard reboot and loaded fine but continued to get the beach ball for several minutes. Since then everything seems to be running fine.

Nov 15, 07 - 03:50 pm Comment from: abelara

anyone know if this fixes the broken dashboard issues? or rss feeds in safari not loading?

i'm not at home to update my imac which has been having the issues stated above.

Nov 15, 07 - 04:18 pm Comment from: macnut

my heart feels snappier!

Nov 15, 07 - 04:24 pm Comment from: nekogami13

Downgraded both my iMac and Mini to Tiger-Leopard was killing my network, both wireless and ethernet connection to DSL.

I guess I will wait 2 or 3 months before I try it again.

Nov 15, 07 - 04:42 pm Comment from: MizuInOz

In the land of Oz - 10.5.1 is very snappier!
I can hear the door slam shut when I quit an application!
Whew!

All is good - no mouse problems. Network is super! I have five Macs and two PCs all networked - Airport Extreme and wired. working good. some Macs are still tiger and some are leopard. I will set up the HP laser printer (2600n) to go wireless - we shall see. If not, I will reconnect to my system and share it.

@ abelara - Dashboard is fine for me and I get my rss feeds now through Mail and all has been good there.

Cheers all.
