Friday, May 29, 2009 - 09:43 AM EDT

Apple has released MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.3.

This SMC Firmware update adjusts the fan behavior in MacBook Pro systems (15-inch and 17-inch) when running under high workload conditions.

The updater application will be installed in the /Applications/Utilities folder and will launch automatically.

Follow the instructions in the updater application to complete the update process.

MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.3 is available via Software Update and also as a standalone installer.

ok, In have the 17" MBP, and downloaded it from the site, and now it is telling me that I don't need this update... weirdness

My 15'' 2.53 Ghz Macbook Pro didn't need the update either...

No update needed for my 2.8Ghz 15" MBP as well.

Worked on my 17" 2.4Ghz MBP. I used smc fan control anyway.

Which MBP models does this relate to? Just unibody or all MBPs?

May 29, 09 - 11:44 am Comment from: It's About Time

Update was not necessary for my late 2008 MBP. This update is similar to a firmware update I installed in December 2008. That install may be the precluding reason for this one not being necessary.

I wish Apple would be clearer about its updates, and just exactly which machines apply.

The fans on my late 2006 MBP kick in big time whenever Google Earth loads. No other application does that.

I got this update for my late 2007 MacBook Pro last night. It *does* tend to get a wee bit too warm whenever I push the CPU, so I'm hoping this update will indeed keep it cooler.

Interesting!

Updates the fans how? My 17" unibody has had excellent Fan behavior. I'm reluctant to install this.

It didn't show up in Software Update for my 17" Macbook Pro unibody. But I don't want anybody mucking with the fans anyway because it's very quiet at present and I'd like to keep it that way.

On my recent 2009 MBP 17, the firmware levels are way higher than what the KB article listed. Yeah, I wish the announcement was more precise.
