So they are taking this seriously

Jun 22, 07 - 06:48 pm Comment from: Zorrin

So,to clarify: this should fix the iChat problem?

Jun 22, 07 - 06:49 pm Comment from: shawn

why is there no "check for updates" on the windows version?

Jun 22, 07 - 06:49 pm Comment from: the other Mark

Nice.
Don't think we'd be seeing MS giving updates this quick for a Beta version.

Jun 22, 07 - 06:49 pm Comment from: One guy from FInland

What?

Safari 3.0.2 for Mac OS X beta?

What?

@ Shawn

For updates simply run the Apple Software update application that installs with iTunes and Quicktime.

Safari 3 gets 2 updates 2 weeks of its release. Where the heck is iLife and iWork '07??????

Jun 22, 07 - 07:06 pm Comment from: Micro Me

It still breaks SafariBlock, so not for me.

Jun 22, 07 - 07:09 pm Comment from: anaknipedro

My question is why I can''t find iBench to replicate Apple's performance results. If it is so "industry standard" you would think such a tool would be readily available. Doe anyone know of a good benchmarking tool for web browsers?

Jun 22, 07 - 07:13 pm Comment from: shawn

@ anaknipedro

oh yeah, i forget that's installed on the windows machine at work. derr...

On more complaint: since when do simple installs in Mac OS require restarting? Does Safari 3.0.X make modifications to the kernel?

Jun 22, 07 - 07:20 pm Comment from: Eric

Any word when they are going to support .Mac bookmark syncing on the Windows version???

"Any word when they are going to support .Mac bookmark syncing on the Windows version???"

Maybe after the .Mac update tonight?
Just guessing.

Jun 22, 07 - 08:24 pm Comment from: AshNazg

Anyone that wants to download iBench can here:

ftp://ftp.pcmag.com/benchmarks/i-bench/

Jun 22, 07 - 09:13 pm Comment from: DLMeyer

This doesn't SAY it's going to let me post my pod casts. Safari 2 did that just fine. Firefox 2 still does that. The software on the other end hasn't been significantly changed.

@AshNagz
I think there are several products named iBench. The one you linked to I believe is to test network speeds, not rendering speeds.

Jun 22, 07 - 09:41 pm Comment from: MacSmiley

@AshNazg,

How about a iBench link for Mac OS X?? EXE's, thank goodness, do not work on a Mac.

Jun 23, 07 - 01:51 am Comment from: Reality Check

iBench is a discontinued internet benchmark that was popular around 1999/2000. It used to be available at http://www.i-bench.com and is now referenced at http://www.veritest.com/benchmarks/i-bench/ but only available as a Windows exectuable. I really don't think it is of any relevance for testing a modern browser as it is so out of date. But I guess Apple's marketing department like it, because it gave some useful figures...

Jun 23, 07 - 01:52 am Comment from: Reality Check

Sorry, ignore the veritest link, it should be:

http://www.lionbridge.com/lionbridge/en-US/services/outsourced-testing/benchmark-software.htm

Jun 23, 07 - 02:03 am Comment from: Reality Check

Incidentally, the marketing figures for how fast Safari is are completely bogus anyway, and another slight of hand by Apple's superb marketing department. The benchmarks exploit a technicality in the order Safari loads page content and don't represent an accurate measure of the rendering of a page. This article explains it all:

@ Reality Check: I don't thinks so...

I do believe my own eyes. Why don't you try doing the same?

Jun 23, 07 - 04:13 am Comment from: cheese

is Safari 3.0.2 already in Software Update?

i fired up software update in my office pc and it didn't seem to find an update for Safari.

i know i'm using a lemon (windows PC) but it still should show me the updates right?

has anybody successfully downloaded the update to Safari for windows?

Jun 23, 07 - 04:31 am Comment from: DenisRS

@ Reality Check: please be aware that Jobs ran iBench *live* and *everyone* *saw* how fast pages were *rendered*, not just loaded or something.

So please do not fall into to the trap of regular FUD agents

Jun 23, 07 - 04:40 am Comment from: Richie_mofo

Fixed all sorts of problems in my Dashboard, hooray!

MW = fine. Workin' fine.

Jun 23, 07 - 05:28 am Comment from: AWidgetIHaveNot

@Cheese

To update Safari for Windows run the Apple Software Update Utility in your start menu>all programs. This works. Happy browsing Cheese.

Jun 23, 07 - 05:56 am Comment from: Huck

But display of bold type under Mac OS X is still completely bizarre-looking (go to talkingpointsmemo.com or JSTOR.org for examples).

It's discouraging that they could introduce some completely arbitrary text-display issue in a new version of Safari, breaking something that had worked perfectly since the first release, and then go on to fail to fix it in the maintenance update.

My faith in Apple's support for Mac OS X is faltering.

Is this maintenance update basically just for Windows, with a perfunctory Mac OS X co-release to keep the version numbering parallel? Because this malformed-bold-type issue in Mac OS X is a pretty significant issue, and it's embarrassing that they're unable to fix it.

Or uninterested?

Jun 23, 07 - 06:01 am Comment from: cheese

@AWidgetIHaveNo

That's what i've been doing since this morning and i've restarted the damn pc for about half as much. Everytime, Software Update tells me my softwares are up to date.

Safari, otoh, tells me otherwise with the version still at 3.0.1.

Btw, I'm typing this via SfW.

I think i'll give it a rest and hopefully the updates appear tomorrow.

thanks.

Jun 23, 07 - 06:52 am Comment from: @Huck

Did you know: Safari 3.xx is currently in BETA??
Apple is obviously addressing core security and stability issues first. I doubt they would prioritize the appearance issue you mention prior to those. In any case, it's more than a little unfair for you to complain until the app comes out of Beta status.

Jun 23, 07 - 06:52 am Comment from: Petey

Trust Apple for it's fast release of updates!

Good work guys!

If only Microsoft could be as efficient (NO CHANCE!!)

@Huck
I went to those 2 web pages you mentioned, with Safari 3.0.2 on XP Pro and on OSX. And so now I ask, what the heck are you talking about? Both of those pages look absolutely fine!

Then I went to the same sites using I.E. and Firefox, and what *I* see is a highly pixelated page of text, very difficult to read compared to Safari. I'll take Safari's view over XP's "dot-matrix printer" view any day.

My XP is totally stock, no settings have been altered from its initial install. Is there something I have to fiddle with first to make it look OK in IE & FF?

Jun 23, 07 - 07:36 am Comment from: Wingsy

I found the option to enable ClearType in XP, so I turned it on and saw no change at all. I even rebooted XP and tried again. Those pages still look pixelated. Can a Windows person tell me what to do to get XP's browsers to give me smooth text?

Jun 23, 07 - 11:30 am Comment from: Cubert

Yes, Wingsy, buy a Mac!

wink

Jun 23, 07 - 07:07 pm Comment from: ctaz

3.0.2 works great on my iMac G5, but on my PowerBook G4 it won't let the Quicktime videos play. I have tried suggestions from apple.com support, no fixes there!

Jun 24, 07 - 06:34 am Comment from: Mike T.

Well, I immediately downloaded it to my PeeCee and tried it out. It starts up slower than IE (pre-7.0), but once up, loads the pages much faster.

Unfortunately, I work for a PeeCee vendor and so we are a MS shop. As the edict came down years ago, if MS has a solution, it doesn't matter how good it is, we use it. This means that I have to deal with Exchange, Sharepoint, etc. in my daily life. And, more unfortunately, at the present time, Safari doesn't play nice with them. When using Exchange's OWA (Outlook Web Access), Safari just hangs. When using (WSS) Sharepoint, Safari dies every time after authenticating. And then there is the ActivKey with my Class A certificate in it. Does not work at all with that. Still I update the BETA and am hoping that Apple will fix it by the initial 1.0 release.

And yes, I did submit the bug reports.

Regards,
Mike.

i've had trouble with safari crashing my entire computer on myspace. happened three times before i went to camino. tried the same exact thing and steps and had no issues. reported it to Apple.

Jun 25, 07 - 12:28 pm Comment from: Ryan

"since when do simple installs in Mac OS require restarting? Does Safari 3.0.X make modifications to the kernel?"

No, but it does update system frameworks like WebKit.framework. Which is used by, among other things, Dashboard.

Not a good idea to overwrite files that are in use. So they do it on boot.

The joys of having an OS-integrated browser!
