Apple runs new multi-banner ‘Get a Mac’ Web ad: ‘Vista… one of the biggest blunders’ (with vid)
Friday, March 21, 2008 - 11:53 AM EDT

Apple is running a new Web-based multi-banner campaign on ZDNet and other online media outlets.

In the new ad, the "PC" played by John Hodgman, doesn't like the overhead banner ads that feature quotes pertaining to Vista's total suckage from the likes of CNET and PC Magazine, so he resorts to using his "Emergency Banner Refresh" switch to try for a better one. No such luck. He does get one from InfoWorld about Mac OS X Leopard, though:

Mar 21, 08 - 12:05 pm Comment from: Grigori

There's now an "Upgrade to Mac" ad there accompanying an article by Mary "Ho" Foley.

Mar 21, 08 - 12:06 pm Comment from: Jocko Flocko

The ad is on the CNET site. Pretty funny.

Mar 21, 08 - 12:09 pm Comment from: Ampar

From Gizmodo:
"We asked [Bill Gates] a simple question: what Microsoft product could have used a little more polish before release?"

Check out his answer.

A different kind of wow?

Mar 21, 08 - 12:12 pm Comment from: MaLvado

Haha, well done!

Mar 21, 08 - 12:15 pm Comment from: BSOD

That ad is so clever. Well done! Their ad agency is worth every penny.

Keep it coming Apple. You're out to change the world.

That ad is so clever. Well done! Their ad agency is worth every penny.

Their ad agency deserves a Nobel prize.

Mar 21, 08 - 12:24 pm Comment from: Ampar

There will be a rise in emergency room visits today as the regular PC trolls on ZDNet and C|Net have a few seizures after seeing this banner ad. Life is good.

Mar 21, 08 - 12:24 pm Comment from: Ray

Awesome!

Just my $0.02

Mar 21, 08 - 12:28 pm Comment from: Danny Smythe

It's running on the New York Times web site.

Mar 21, 08 - 12:33 pm Comment from: MacSheikh

Man they're funny! They should give the people who come up with these ads some ad industry Oscar type thing or something. I know they have one, i just can't remember what its called.

That's freaking hilarious. Even Bill Gates realizes it. Is it just Monkey Boy who doesn't then? Or does even he, and he just has to try and keep up appearances?

Mar 21, 08 - 12:59 pm Comment from: maclover

in one interview, BG talks abouy MS success with 'hardware' and the Xbox, newsflash, the Xbox is a PC in a black case, the Zune is a rebranded Toshiba Gigabeat, maybe the 360 is different, I don't know, but If you cant create compelling software, which is your specialty, supposedly, does it matter if its encased in a black box, white box, brown box, or gold-plated turd ? lol

Mar 21, 08 - 01:03 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Just caught this one on the New York Times site.

I was actually shocked. Apple goes bare-knuckled with this one.

To MacSheikh : http://www.webbyawards.com/

To Crabs: Ballmer (sort of) knows it.

"I think it’s probably important for me to tell our partners that, rest assured, we will never have a gap between Windows releases as long as the one between XP and Windows Vista,” Ballmer told thousands at the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference in Boston.

"I think there is a lot of value in Vista," he said. Ballmer went on to argue that the real issue for some customers is ensuring that everything they need to support the operating system -- such as device drivers -- is ready before they make the transition to Vista.

"When we initially shipped, fewer device drivers were ready for Vista than I would have liked, but we constantly worked with the device vendors to get new drivers available and implemented through our Windows update service," [Ballmer] said.

I know you guys don't like hearing it, but VISTA is no where near as bad as the press has made it out to be. The group-think blasting of VISTA reminds me of the days when no one would write about Apple computer without the word "beleaguered" somewhere in the text.

I use VISTA on a daily basis. I have no more problems with VISTA than I have with OS X. I'm sitting is my office right now with VISTA up on my PC laptop, and OS X up on my Mac laptop.

Don't be fooled by how screwed up the media is. You know how those assholes work. For some reason VISTA is the target right now, and Apple (god bless them) is taking advantage.

I just hope Mac people are smarter than the majority. Don't believe what you hear until you sit down and use VISTA. The one true criticism is just how much of a powerful machine you need. Other than that. I'll go out on a limb and state that in my humble experience, it is as stable as OS X Leopard.

Mar 21, 08 - 03:50 pm Comment from: Jooop

@theloniousMac:

I disagree. I was issued a work laptop with Vista on it about six months ago and I gave it an honest go for that six months before reverting to XP a couple days ago. Vista is just so slow at everything. A routine batch file copy over the network of about 40 html files (about 20MB) takes around 3-4 minutes with XP and about 30 minutes from either of my two different Vista machines. Unacceptable. And that's just one annoyance. Using Vista literally sent me into a rage on a daily basis. XP is a breath of fresh air compared to that steaming pile of garbage.

Mar 21, 08 - 03:51 pm Comment from: JadisOne

@theloniousMac,

Normally, I would be inclined to agree. But I've had to reinstall Vista twice on a brand new PC whereas the shiny new MacBook with Leopard runs like a champ. However, I do have to admit Vista is much easier on the eyes than XP.

Mar 21, 08 - 03:54 pm Comment from: MikeK

I honestly think the web ads are better written and better produced than the TV ads.

Mar 21, 08 - 03:59 pm Comment from: Jooop

@JadisOne:

Agreed about the Vista theme vs. the XP theme, that's why I installed a Vista theme after reverting to XP. Since the only benefit of Vista that's noticeable to the user is the theme, XP with a Vista theme really feels like Vista, except it's way WAY faster.

But that said, Vista's theme is downright crass compared to Leopard's.

Mar 21, 08 - 04:02 pm Comment from: AppleJack

I wonder if Vista has replaced New Coke as the biggest failure of a newly introduced product in history.

@ th-Mac , I agree, other than being an over-priced, pared down (32 or 64 or Aero, ect. and lacking drivers) resource hog of a complete copy, . . . I think Vista is almost as good as a better looking XP.

Mar 21, 08 - 04:05 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

I guess we have different experiences on VISTA. I'm benefitting from the fact that I started with a blazingly fast Alienware laptop to begin with, and that I'm in control of my own VISTA destiny instead of dealing with an IT department trying to force fit VISTA onto an older laptop, into an XP centric environment.

For me, the only reason I re-installed was just for the heck of it to pay closer attention to what was going on.

Mar 21, 08 - 05:00 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

Wow Egyptian, that's sounds like a horrible experience.

I cheated. I am actually using iTunes for music. But I will try adding music to my secondary drive to see what happens.

Information regarding the video requirements of VISTA was readily available, but you're right. Many people are shocked by the cost of a new video card.

As far as media is concerned... VISTA is all about DRM and not about the user experience. The system is definitely geared toward making content providers happy and not end users.

I'm not saying that VISTA is perfect, by any stretch of the imagination. I am saying however that there is a bit of media generated anti-VISTA hysteria going around, and having been on the other end of irrational media negative press (when they hated all things Apple). I just know a bunch of bullshit when I see it.

Mar 21, 08 - 05:03 pm Comment from: Woody

@ MacSheikh & Ampar: How about the Clio Awards. Been around a lot longer than the webbys.

Mar 21, 08 - 05:17 pm Comment from: It's fine

for doing regular old office work; we've got it here on new Acers, and it runs just fine, but it isn't terribly robust for doing anything else. Safari runs great though-it gives the Mac versiona a real run for its money.

Mar 21, 08 - 05:23 pm Comment from: Ampar

Good point, Woody. I have a friend that won a Clio for an animated pickle TV ad.

Mar 21, 08 - 06:02 pm Comment from: John Davis

It's interesting that the MOST positive comments about Vista are that "it's not that bad."

I've played with it and I agree. It's not that bad. That, dear friends, is MEDIOCRITY.

Mar 21, 08 - 07:25 pm Comment from: Always Right

Interesting how some now say "great ad agency" "should get award", etc.

I remember when most lamented these ads as "not demonstrating the merits of OSX", etc.

Mar 21, 08 - 07:57 pm Comment from: ken1w

> I know you guys don't like hearing it, but VISTA is no where near as bad as the press has made it out to be.

Maybe... but it is no where near as good as it should have been, considering the time and resources expended to produce it. There is no compelling reason to upgrade from XP. The only way Vista actually gets sold is by being force fed to people who buy new PC's.

Mar 21, 08 - 08:55 pm Comment from: Newsflash

I love the irony: made in Adobe Flash.

Don't think as we think, think as we say:
Full Internet does not include the evil proprietary Flash!

Mar 22, 08 - 01:26 am Comment from: MacSheikh

@ Ampar & Woody

Thanks!

Mar 22, 08 - 08:46 am Comment from: yet another steve via iPodDailyNews

The Vista/New Coke analogy fits this way: the idiocy of replacing your flagship product with something allegedly "better" that customers hate.

But since Coke wasn't a monopoly, they had to restore the old product and let consumers decide (New Coke was sold for quite some time.) Since MS is an arrogant monopoly, they're pulling XP from the shelves in June, New Coke style.

There actually are some people who like Vista. But only an arrogant monopoly like MS would not allow individual customers and businesses to decide for themselves.

Of course in the context of the Mac world, it is an amazing windfall. The most used and perhaps even loved OS on the planet is being KILLED... by its maker. It's the greatest gift MS has given the mac universe since word and excel in the 80s!

Mar 22, 08 - 12:31 pm Comment from: Real World

"I wonder if Vista has replaced New Coke as the biggest failure of a newly introduced product in history. "

No, when you look at the relative sales numbers that award could go to any Mac OS X release.

Mar 22, 08 - 12:34 pm Comment from: All Hail Steve, King of Kings

And in other news, Vista steamrollers Leopard in marketplace.

Ads are one thing. Real world sucess is another.

Mar 22, 08 - 10:34 pm Comment from: Rip Ragged

Every once in a while somebody says, "No, really. Vista doesn't suck nearly as bad as everyone says."

That's short of saying it doesn't suck. Vista has been on the market for 16 months. It still crashes more machines than it runs.

Leopard rocks. That is the opposite of sucks.

Mar 23, 08 - 12:05 pm Comment from: Voltaic

I would like to know why my post was removed. I sure hope this site is not removing posts critical of Apple.

Essentially my post was for Apple not to brag too much and put down Vista since Leopard is anything but perfect. Myself and everyone I know have had nothing but serious problems with it, I ended up reverting to Tiger. Based on my experience and those of my friends, I find this add misleading and insulting.

Mar 23, 08 - 07:48 pm Comment from: Another IT Guy...

Most of the complaints from upgrading Vista users (incompatible legacy hardware and software) stem from the fact that M$ finally and rightly stripped kernel access from hardware drivers and made admin rights elevation an integral part of the system--that, and that it didn't turn lead into gold, of course.

And we all know there were no users that suffered upgrade issues going from Tiger to Leopard, right? Oh, wait, that's not right.

Mar 28, 08 - 11:11 am Comment from: DC

I have been using Vista for a year. It looks nice and modern and my first impression was it stole the Mac OS style. It's slower than XP. it becomes really annoying when software you want to use won't support Vista. I got a blue screen the other day after a Firefox update though blue screen are rare from my experience. I am due for a a har drive upgrade and will probably install XP as there are no real benefits to having Vista except headaches. I have no sympathy for Microsoft after reading about the entire "Vista Capable" lawsuit.
